NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
CHICAGO. Dee. 30 AlarmlYig report In
res-axd to the crisis In the orient Imparted
strength tA both grain and provisions today,
liberal profit taking, however, caused a
os of all of the gain In the leading option
In wheat. May closing - at preclnely toe
final flu urea of yesterday. May corn fin
ished a up, oat Vko and provisions Ufto to
.Vc higher.
An easier feeling was manifested In the
wheat pit at the start, owing to easier ca
bles, large receipts In the northwest and
southwest and a general disposition on the
part of .the local traders to . take profit.
Considerable wheat came out the Unit hour
and the market became quite weak. May
declining to 834c, after opening H'u
lower at S4o to Me. On rumors that the
pending long was buying freely many of
the early sellers turned buyers and there
Wore additional purchases to even up over
the holidays. Sensational war rumors were
circulated and prices advanced rapidly. May
Sold ud to BSe. A reaction occurred dur
ing the last half hour on reallilng, but the
close was Arm, wRh May at 84,e. Clear-
noes of wheat and flour were equal to 431,
J"U bushels. Primary receipts were L016,
0 bunhels, against 660,700 bushels a year
ago. Minneapolis. Duluth and Chicago re
ported receipts of fid cars, against 667 cars
last week and 847 cars a year ho.
- War news furnished the lever for bulls
In the corn pit to boost prices a little
higher. Additional factors, however, were
found In the steady cables, smalr receipts
ana continued light movement In the coun
try. The feature In trading was the sell
ing of about 250,000 busheis of May by I
prominent provision house. The offerings
were taken by commission houses. Closing
prices were strong. May opened unchanged
to Ho higher at 44T4S4tc, sold between 44 o
end i'o, closing at 46'ic. Local receipts
were 130 cars, none of contrsot grade.
Oats were easier early. In sympnthy with
whmtt, but later beeame strong under active
buying by commission houses. The market
waa affected by the same Influences that
iroverned wheat and corn. Closing prices
were near the top. with May at SStiSSMio,
after rpen)ng a shade lower at 87o and
ranging between 87c and 8c. Local re-
ti4i,ta wei s 106 cars.
Large shipments of lard and meats, to
gether with the war rumors, were the In,
enliv that caused good demand for pro
visions. There was an uncannily good de
mand for May pork and tha product led
the list In the advance. There was fair
covering by shorts and an active demand
!rnm packer. - The close was strong; with

NEW TORK. Dec. 3u. There was a pro
nounced disposition to taks profits In to
day stock market, as was clearly fore
shadowed by the action of the late market
of yesterday, but there was not lacking
fosterin care of the market which held
It In check on ths declines and nursed the
recoveries. The opinion wss thereby caused
that while the large Interests behind the
market were disinclined to continue the
advance In the face of a stiff call money
market, they were by no means willing to
relinquish the advantageoua positions se
cured for the year end situation. It It Is
true, as generally supposed that th great
banking croups, with their allied and com
plex Interests In the great trust companies,
tne insurance companies ana in omer nn-
anclal Institutions have given a friendly
countenance to the advance In prices, to
correct the discrepancies from last year's
showings In balance sheets. Investments
neia, etc.. It would not sgree witn tnose
purposes to have the advance yielded on
the very eve of the new year.

tuai guaroiansmp was evinced oy tne way
Influential stocks were bid UD to hold
prices. The Pacifies and the United States
Bteel sotcks war conspicuous examples.
Some of the less prominent stocks which
hsv enjoyed violent advances in the last
few days were forced back with propor
tional violence In the day's realising. The
electric stocks and the high priced coalers
were In this list. The New York punuc

while this fane trade has been curtailed
by the large anticipatory business last
spring. Ths speculation In United States
Steel was very active throughout the day
and was accompanied by many rumors as
to the coming dividends to be decided
early next month. The price of the stocks
has been accented as discounting a prob
able suspension of dividends on the common
and a reduction on tne preferred, x ne
rumors were current today that the pre
ferred dividend would- be maintained- and
a common dividend possibly paid were
therefore sufficient to alarm a short In
terest In the stock.
The oneninr monev rate at T per cent was
the highest of the day and comment on
the Stock exchange was caused by Uie
fact that one of the great bsnke - was
freely calling loans while another was as
freely offering funds, with a resulting
break In the loaning rat late In the day
to- nominal figures, the two Inxtltutlons
belna srenerallv accented as representative
of the two greit groups of capitalize In the
street.- The Inference wss drawn that there
was a - difference of opinion between the
two as to the stock market policy. The
feverish and excited cotton market had
some disturbing effect In the stock mar
ket. The market was dull and heavy.
Bonds were easy, total sales, par value,
