Members of labor unions in South Omaha
are keeping In close touch With conditions
prevailing In Chicago. The packing house
cooper in Chicago have demanded a uni
form .scale of 88 a day and th reduction
In the number of apprentlcea who take the
place of men In the lighter portion of the
work.
George Stephens, business agent for the
Packing Trade council aald to a reporter
for The Bee last night that the South
Omaha tabor element waa taking a con
servative view of the situation and hoped
that no hasty action would be taken.
Continuing Mr. Stephens said that In case
th packer In Chicago refused to com to
an agreement with the cooper all of the
amalgamated associations would be called
out at all of the packing center In th
country. He, however, did not think that
this action would be taken there waa
but such a slight difference In the scale
now, given and the price asked by the
Coopers. Even a it I th union men meet
every evening at th headquarters here to
get the latest new .from President Don'
Sally In Chicago. South Omaha packers
employ only about ninety coopers, but the
coopers' union is In th amalgamated asso
ciation, hence the Interest In the outcome
all along the line.
Aside from the disturbance In Chicago
there is'nothlng to ruffle th serenity of the
situation here. Mr. Stephens said that the
men employed in the packing house her
were wall satisfied at present and that
they had no grievance against their em
ployera. .
Mr Pave Twenty-Fifth Street.
Sine th council ha taken action In the
matter of paving south .Twenty-fourth
street and Railroad avenue without a pe
tition the suggestion has been made that
Twenty-fifth street from L street north to
the city limits bs paved under the same
provisions. As the Twenty-fourth street
pavement 1 almost unfit to travel' on those
who use vehicles are advocating the pav
ing of either Twenty-third or Twenty-
fifth strest. Several members of the coun
cil have been asked their opinion on this
matter and they assert that more than
likely one or the other of these streets
will be paved next year unless the Twenty.
fourth street property owners ga to work
and" provide means for th laying of a sub
stantial pavement
Welcome Thirtieth Infantry.
Preparation are being made by South
Omaha cltlsens, those of ., Bellevue" and

Thirtieth United State Infantry which will

.It I th Intention to have a celebration at

that the. company of the Sixth Infantry

bout two months ago J. L. Kennedy
began work with an iutflt widening the
Hock Island 'roadbed from Albright to
Gate, i It waa expected that this 'work
wouia taae up tne greater part oi a year,
Within the last day or two th Rock Island
officials cancelled the contract and Ken
nedy has moved hi .grading outfit to other
point. Only a portion of the work con
templated had been done and none of. tt
completed. At South Omaha nothing posi
tive I known about th action of th com
pany in this matter beyond the fact that
the contract had been cancelled. It Is x
pected, however, that a new contract will
be entered Into a soon a the weather
change, so that grading can. be done to
advantage. ' When this grading begun It
waa th Intention to lay a double track and
corns sidetrack ' between Albright and
Gates.
Annual Charity Ball.
It ha been decided by the South Omaha
Hospital association to hold the annual
charity ball on January 18. This event Is
one of the social affair of the, season and
will, of course, be the same this year. The
proceed of the ball go Into the hospital
treasury. On January 6, the member of
th association will meet and elect officers
for the year and .th annual report read,
After the election of officer in January It
is th purpose of the member .of the asso
ciation to again make a move to secure
fund enough to build a hospital here. So
many of th patients treated at the hoe
pltal are unable to pay their way that the
Institution Is usually a little behind In It
finances. What la wanted la a source of
Income which can be depended upon. The
suggestion has been msde that the work
Ingmen In the pecking houses psy a certain
sum per week Into the fund. Labor leaders
seem to think that the end could be reached
by the hospital acquiring a building of its
own and then permit the union to agree
to support a certain number of bed.
