BAN FRANCISCO, Dec. B.-A forest fir.
In the mountains northeast of this city has
proved to be the moat destructive In the
history of this end of the ranse. The Are
is br r.o means under control. All the
awed lumber belonging .to the Brookllngs
Lumber conpany, between 4.000,000 and
.000,000 feet, has been destroyed, but as the
flames have been kept away from the mills
Brookllngt' loss will rot exceed 1100,000.
Late ycfcteraay the fire reached Fredalba
park, a summer resort not far from Brook
lings' mill, and destroyed all the cottages
there. Last night the line of Are along the
mountain side was three to four miles long
and was sweeping down the south aids of
the range toward the valley.
As to the amount of territory burned over.
Chief Ranger Tortensen says It Is Impossi
ble to give an estimate, but It is many
thousand acres, each of which Is the finest
standing timber In the mountains. The fire
started from a donkey engine used by the
lumber company and a fierce north wind
fanned the flames, which soon got beyond
all control. The fire is twenty miles long
and the country is completely overcast by
moke.

Remember the Importance of
Providing for the Dependent.
Christmas is the gift giving holiday. The
tenderness of parents and children, ot wives
and husbands, of brothers and sisters, and
of friends for friends has its concrete set
ting in the tokens exenanged. The poor
are also remembered in the holiday time
and the dependent receive more than ordi
nary consideration. These days remind
us that the happiness of those dependent
upon us is more or less within our own
control, and hence the
Bankers Reserve Life
would suggest to the readers ot this Jour
nal that no mors sensible holiday provision
can be arranged for than a twenty-payment
gold bond life policy, for wife or
children, or both. It la the safest posai
ble form of Investment. Its value Is fixed
and no avaricious creditor can deprive the
loved ones of its benefits in the event of a
sudden call from the activities of earth
As a protection for the wife and little
ones It is incomparably superior to a mort
gage or real estate, because It is
cash when matured. As ' an investment
it Is a constantly growing asset, with.
cash surrendei or loan value easily deter
mined and immediately available.

of policy. He invites unmarried men to
