ancies the other way, The Increase In tht
loan Item of a little over 31.000,000 waa not
disturbing. Tha market closed steady and
not far from last night's level.
The sterling exchange market was weak
and declined to a level which will assure
ths movement toward New Tork of any
available gold supply In money markets.
Conditions abroad as well a here prom
ise a continuance of the firm money market
for the rest of the year. But It is made
clear from the movement of the Interna
tional exchanges and the statistics of InUr
national traoo that New Yoik command J
the exchange situation. New Orleune and
San Francisco have fflade further requisi
tions upon New York for currency during
the week and additional ahlpmenls to thoe
points are expected, but the western de
mand for crop moving purposes has come
to an end. Gold for import has secured In
the London mnrket whenever the movement
of money ralea did not make It mors
profitable for holders of exchange on Lon
don to hold up their collection and leave
the proceeds of loan In London. A new
development has been the shipments of
p-nld from Japan to Ban Francisco. San
Francisco's exchange needs are usually
satisfied by way of Australia, but large
Australian crops have thrown the advan
tage of exchange to that center. Sun Fran
cisco finds It of greater advantage to dls-
Sose of Its sterling exchange claims to
apan and take gold from there In eom
penastlon. The movement serves a a re
lief from the San Francisco demands in
New York for currenoy. Confidence Is
undiminished -.hat money will become
easier with the turn of the year, and It
la believed that tha movement in stocks Is
In part a discounting or this expectation.
The bond market has been somewhat Ir
regular, but has grown stronger In sym
pathy with to.iks. United States 2s and
the new 4s declined n Pr cent telow the
closing call of last week.

CAiTI.K The eama aa usual on a Sat-
uruay, there were nut enough cattle here
tn la morning to make a maraet. For tne
week receipts have been about tha same
as for last week, but as compared with
the correfeponuliig week of last year there
Is a decrease of about 3,000 head.
There has been quit an Increase mis
week in the receipts of corn-fed steers,
but most of those to arrive nave been
warmed up and snort-fed stock and have
not sold to good advantage. As compsred
with the close of last week, there la very
little change In ruling prices. The com
mon kinds, of course, sell unevenly, and
tor that leason some sales look much bet
ter than others, but as a general thing the
prices ralQ are about the same as a week
go. The demand for th better grades of
curn-reda lias been oouv au tne weea,
with prices fully steady. Good to choloe
corn-feds may be quoted from 14.60 to 3510
fair to good irom 4.26 to 84.60, and warmed
up catt.e irom 33.60 to 84.25.
The cow market nus been active most
of the week and prices. If anything, are a
little Mgher than at the 0 ose of last week.
The Lovance, however, Is confined- very
laigely to tha latter grades and would be
coteied by 10c and In extreme cases by 16c.
Canners and cutlers are ldoui steaay ana
are selling from 11.76 to 32.40. Fair to good
cows go from (2.40 to 32.7.1, and good to
choice from 32.76 to 33.00, with an occasional
sale a little above that, klulta a few corn-
feds are beginning to arrive, but they are
mostly short-ted and sell In about the same
notches as grassers of the same quality and
nesn. 1 .
Bulls, veal calves and stsgs arc sun sell
ing In about the same notches they have
been for the last several weeks.
The week opened witn an aottve aemana
for stockera and feeders and n rices ad
vanced a little. Toward the close of the
week, however, there was not aa much
activity and a largo share of th advance
was lost, closing prices being about th
same ae a week mo. Common cattle sell
from 33.00 down, lair to gooa from ts.vo to
38 26. and good to choloe from 33.26 to 83.60.
