JEW RATE RILES GRAIN MEN
Out by Book Island Denounced as Plot
Againit Omaha.
MEMBERS OF EXCHANGE AIR THEIR VIEWS
ttoelar All Roads Exeept Great West
!? Are Combined la Effort to
Defeat Grata Market
. Project.
Tlie tnembers of the new Omaha Grain
exchange are very much wrought up over
the action of the Rock Island In lowering
tha rate on grain Into Omaha, which Is
required to secure the low proportional
rata on that product out of the city to
Ittiineapolla and , 8t. Paul.
They see In it a move on the part of the
railroads te kll( In its Infancy the move
ment to make a grain market here. One
' grain man explained It by saying:
i uou i you see mat inis vnnga in m lot
iit new territory which t enabled to secure
' the low proportional rale to the east? Be
'fur this territory was brought in, the
graln shipments, from that section would

was a market eatabllahedhere, because
Die grain could not be shipped east Under
the low proportional rate of I cents on
wheat and a eenta on corn.' but now that
these low rates can be secured east by
the ahlDDers of a-raln from the stations In
the new section which has been brought
.In, the product will, of course, go right
bv Omaha. .' It ' has luwn ' mv hellef alt
the time that the railroads would do their
utmost, and try to put a damper on any
attempt to build up a market here, and
this latest move on their part proves the
assertion I have made many times."
Heaards it a Serloas Blow,
Another grain dealer said; "I have not
joined the new exchange as yet. for the

'Jimt hovr'lhe railroads were going to re

"I can see, 1 at first thought perhaps the
action f the Chicago Oreat Western in
making a low proportional rate to tne east
ouUV.Ja bleanlug to this city and Ne
braska, but, judging from the late action
'i.f the Itock lsluiiil, I think we have lost
all have gained unless we are smart
'i-nough to originate some plan to thwart
' the' scheme on foot. A blind man could
ee that the new move of the Rock Island
' sill force Btlckney to again lower bis pro
portional rate east from Omaha in order
that he cansecure any. of the business.
and this, of course, will be met by an
other reduction by ' the Hock Island or
some other road which runs into Omaha
from the west. The ultimate result will
be that we will have a flat rate out of this
city to the east on wheat of about 6
cents, or less, to Minneapolis and St, Paul,
and that is Just what the railroads want
until this movement is killed. The re
duction of the proportional rat by the
Chicago Great Western has served us an
excuse to the other roads to make a cut.
They are all in cahoots, and the next
move will perhaps come from some other
line besides ths Rock Island. When . I
say that they are all In cahoots I do
not wish to be understood that I think the
Chicago Great - Western is In the deal.
think Mr. Bllckney Is playing fair with
Omaha and doing the best he can tor us.
and I hope that he will win, which I be
lleve ho can If we will give him all the as
sistance In our power and all pull together
against the common enemy."
