Western la a ahrewd man and one who
know what he la about before he makes a
t move In any direction. The conference of
the executive officials of the several roads
tntereated in the new proportional grain
rates which Mr. Stlckney's road ,hai
adopted, held at Chicago on Tuesday, re
sulted in nothing. Of course the opposition
line tried to induce- the1 Great Western to
sinodlfy its rate through this city so as not
to affect the throtigh rate from points went
of Omaha, but it was of no avail. " Mr.
Stickney came back with the answer that
it was not the desire of his company to
disturb the existing through rates, but he
Ululated that if the through lines did not
want them disturbed they should in return
mine their rates west of the river.
The general freight agents of all the
prlm-lpal coeds are holding a conference
