FLORENCE, Colo., Bcpt. 17 -The district convention of the United Mine Workers of America of Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico, which has been called to meet here next October, was today ad vanced one month and will meet In Pueblo next Wednesday, September 23. The change Is made on account of the desire of a large number of members to have a general strike called for the establishment of an eight-hour da' and some other reform In the operation of coal mines. It Is the general opinion that a strike will be. or dered to take effect October 1. There are about 1.000 coal miners in the district, a majority of whom are said to belong to the United Mine Workers of America. Operators Refuse Demands. DENVER, Sept. 17. Mitchell and Mooney Disagree. KANSAS CITY, Sept. 17. James Mooney, a coal miner of Novlnger, Mo., a member of the national board of the United Mine Workers of America, suggested In' a speech at the conference with operators 1 this morning that the coal miners and the mine owners in this district combine to , raise the price of 'coal So that' the' oper- .: ators might make A good profit .and the miners might get big wages, regardless of what It might cost the coal consuming public. This suggesUon was Immediately repudi ated by John Mitchell, president of the United Mine Workers of Amerloay and by Mr. Lewla, vice president of that organi sation. Mr. Mitchell said: . We, as an organisation, believe that the operators are entitled to a fair profit upon tneir investment ana mat tne wage earn ers are entitled to a fair wage for their labor. But to obtain either we would not enter a combination to extort money from tne puDiic. Ex-Congressman ' Tarsney, representing the operators, said: I deem It but fair and just to Mitchell and his organisation to say that I do not think a man here believed that was the policy of his organisation.
