Germany as It was or may have been a
hundred years ago and Germany as It ex
ists In New Jersey met together at Bchuet
en park, Union Hill, the occasion being the
Flattdeutsche volksfest.
A volksfest In Bchuetsen park is a sort of
combined club, family picnic and Coney
island, elevated to respectability without
thereby growing dull.

dltlons under 20,000 German flags and thrice
as many couples of the Stars and Btrlpes
were making themselves happy and at home
there with brass bands, beer, much bravery
of badges and banners, to say nothing of a
wedding with a real live bride and bride
groombride and bridegroom and all the
attendants attired In quajnt Low German
costumes of the century past.
The volksfest is in charge of the "Piatt
deutsche Volksfest Vereln von New York
and Umgegend," but many other verelns,
clubs, gesellschaften, schUetcen corps, and
whatever else these societies name them
selves were represented.
These societies were named for places in
the old country and In the new of Hudson
county, of Baden, of Hesse, of Bavaria.
From Brooklyn, with flags, rosettes and a
band, came 300 of the Plattdeutsche Volk
fest Vereln of that city, and all the socle
ties as they arrived were met by tha com
mlttee in front of the club house and es
corted around the grounds In procession
with bands playing and colors flying.
Meantime the place was alive with peo
pie, men, women and children, who strolled
about and watched the procession and cer
tain athletes in tights of pink and orange
who were doing the usual things on rings
and trapeses. Yet others allowed them
selves to be swallowed up by clamorous side
shows. All tha processions stopped a mo
ment before a stand marked "Haupquartler
des Vereln," whence fluttered flags and
where notables sat with badges.
About 6 o'clock, however, came the pro
cession of processions tho wedding march.
At the head was the committee of ushers
armed with whips; then the band, followed
by two old men with ancient long coats,
very tall hats and wands crowned with
flowers. A watchman with a lanthorn and
halberd, and the parson with book and
bands.
Then came little flower girls in German
costume, red skirts, embroidered bodices
and white stockings. Then the bride and
bridegroom. The bride looked proud and
pretty and wore a blue stomacher, a skirt
of white and a long veil. The bridegroom
smiled a bit sheepishly and wore a white
hat with ribbons, a velvet Jacket, knee
breeches and white stockings.
Following came mediaeval harvesters
with reaping hooks, huntsmen with horns
and matchlocks, and soldiers with spiked
helmets like those Emperor William wears
In cartoons; then smiling young women in
laco and embroidered stomachers, short
red skirts, a bit tedder than the cheeks of
the wearers, and again white stockings.
Last of all came a strange bird a white
bird called by the children along the line
'the duck" but the creature must have

been the stork, for he carried twins under
either wing a baby.
The marriage ceremony took place on tha
platform before the pavilion. In the sight
of all the people, who cheered when It was
over.
During the ceremony the bride looked de
mure, yet smiled; the bridegroom looked
uneasy. But he smiled when he kissed the
bride which he did with a tender grace
and the bride smiled when she kissed the
parson a thing she did very coquettlshly.
It was the parson who led the cheers.
Afterward was the grand march In the
ball room ot the pavilion, and when all tha
quaint company had circled the room sev
eral times they marched off to the Farm
House In the Forest, where the wedding
feast was spread.
The bridegroom bore the name of William
de la Roche. The bride was named Mamie
Rodell.
Without the "farm house" sat the peas
ants, resting on rakes and reaping hooka
and drinking gesundheVten. Mingled with
them were many people, young and old men
and women In plain American garb, also
drinking geaundhelten, and among the
trees strolled together man and maid, the
gay raiment of the old fatherland paired
with the somber coats of the new.
Among the trees, also, played the chil
dren, plump house mothers sat In groups
with tholr families, and old ladles from
the Frits Reuter Altenhelm upon the Mil
above walked about bobbing and smiling.

Serious trouble Is threatened at some ot
the ear tern summer resorts because the
women have taken up the fashion ot going
to church without wearing hats. The rec
tor of the Asbury Park, N. J, Episcopal
church has been compelled to post a notice
upon the outside of the edifice warning
women that they must not in future enter
there without wearing hats. In explaining
his attitude the reotor said to a New York
Herald reporter:
"The practice has been growing, and as
it is a distinct violation ot a rule which has
txlsted In the church from the beginning.
I felt that it was my duty to put a stop to
It. The rule Is based on the twelfth chap
ter of Paul's first epistle to the Corinthi
ans. The entire chapter refers to the con
duct of the women In the churches. In
reference to their going uncovered into tne
churches Paul said: "But every woman
that prayeth or prophesieth with her head,
uncovered dlshonoreth her head, for that
Is even all one on if she were shaven.
At Atlantic City Father McShane, pastor
of the fashionable Catholic church, hag
been' forced to rebuke the women for en
tering hatless . into the church, and" the
Long Branch , women also have ,bean
warned by their Episcopalian rector1 that
they must wear hats or stay, away .from
ohurch.
Bishop Scarborough of the Episcopal dio
cese of New Jersey has taken a determined
stand on the hatless woman question, de
claring that it is contrary to the bible and
the Injunction of the Apostle Paul for
women to attend religious services "with
out suitable covering for the head."
Some of the women who have offended
by appearing hatless in church declare that
thnv will nav no attention to tha lines nr
conduct laid down by the preachers, and
they even go so far as to declare that they
look upon the whole matter as "silly and
unimportant." The trouble began last
summer, when Bishop Scarborough felt
called upon to make a publlo address in
which he denounced the fashion that has
now apparently become so general as to
make the church authorities consider It
