A a result of a visit to this city of Fred
Kle.el, chairman of the executive com
mittee of the eleventh National Irrigation
congress. Omaha will send a delegation to
the Irrigation congress, to be held In Ogden,
September 15, 16, 17 and 18. Mr. Klesel met
with about twenty-five representative cltl-
gens at the Commercial club rooms t rlday
and upon the return of Secretary Utt the
matter will be taken up by the Commercial
club and the delegation selected. It Is the
Intention of those Interested to get at least
twenty persons to attend.
George E. Paine presided at the meeting
and speeches were made by Mr. Klesel,
Isaac W. Carpenter of the Carpenter Taper
company' and nearly every one present. All
were heartily In favor of sending a dele
gation to the congress and each spoke of
the vast benefit Irrigation of the west would
be to Omaha.
Mr. Klesel said Omaha would undoubt
edly be benefited by irrigation in the west,
and as an example of what Omnha was to
Ogden and other western cities, he said:
"We are building a large reservoir near
Ogden and I have handled all of the funds
used In Its construction. Fully 90 per cent
of all the purchases wero either made In
Omaha or passed through here. All the
groceries used by the men at work came
from Omaha, and, In fact, nearly all of the
money finally got Into the pockets of
Omaha dealers."
As for the congress Mr. Klesel said It
would bo one of the most far-reaching In
Its effect that has ever been held. lie cited
examples of the vast amount of money
being spent in Nevada for Irrigation pur
poses and said that for every dollar spent
by the government three or four dollars
would be spent In private enterprises.
What Irrigation Can Do.
Mr. Klesel told of a fruit farm he owned
that a few years ago would raise nothing
but sage brush, that last year he gathered
apples from" the trees on it that were larger
than thosv from the "Land of the Big Red
Apple." lie promised to make it pleasant
for all who attended the congress and said
the legislature had appropriated JG.000, the
people of Ogden had contributed $5,000 and a
like amount would be secured from Salt
Lake for the entertainment of the visitors.
Prizes have been offered for the best dis
play of fruit grown on Irrigated farms and
a practical illustration of an Irrigated farm
will be ahown In Ogden.
"The meeting will be opened different
from all others," said Mr. Klesel," for this
congress will be the pacemaker. We Intend
to give a prize to the best ode to Irrigation,
have it set to muslo and sung at the open
ing by 2,000 voices.
An ode that failed to get the prize was
then read and roundly applauded.
The meeting was merely an Informal
gathering, but everyone present waa en
thusiastic over the congress and promised
to take the matter up in the Commercial
club at once.

OMAHA EXPRESSMEN QUIET

Not In with Chicago Movement
for Hither Wages.
"We are not anticipating a demand for
higher wages and shorter hours from our
office and depot employes,'? said the man
ager of one of the big express companies
doing business in Omaha. "The threat of
the Brotherhood of Railway Expressmen
to tie up business In Chicago unless their
demands are granted has not been dupli
cated In Omaha and so far as I know
there Is no move on foot to advance
wages." ,
There are from sixty to seventy-five office
and depot employes In Omaha express
offices. Of this number not more than one
fifth belong to the Brotherhood. None of
the men of the American and Adams
offices are in. It Is not doubted but that
the local organization will grow, but trou
ble over wages is not considered a con
tingency. The Adams people say they are
paying fully as high wages as those de
manded in Chicago. Xs to hours no com
plaints have been made.
