Low fteeora la Valaes.
NEW TORK, July 15. The violent liqui
dation In atocas and bonda continued on
the fettock exenange today and brought a
general low recoru of values for the year,
jjie money exigencies of the New York
Central, which was the particular ue
velnpment upon which the present selling
movement started, has widened so as to,
take In the railroad world aulte generally.
Yesierday s late announcement that the
Chicago, Burlington A Qulncy had bor
rower t,0ou,0i lor a period extending over
Into next March on a 8 per cent basia was
supplemented today by the official an
nouncement that the Union Pacific rail
road had also borrowed to the extent of
$lo,tAJUO for year and a half, also prac
tically on a per oent baaln. The authori
tative news of the day regarding the
money requirements of the great railroad
corporations was supplemented by countless
rumors of all degrees of credibility point
ing to urgent money needs on the part ot
the railroad world in general and Individual
capitalists in particular, and alleging that
great sacrifices were necessary to be made
to secure funds In hand., '1 he effect of
this condition was to provide a field day
for the bears In the stock market. Tms
element of the stock brokers have been
pursuing their advantage ail day long and
the extent of their operations on the short
side left an effective requirement for stocks
towards the end of the day. The buying
of the bears to cover cauaed a.strone rally
in the market, which wiped out the earlier
losses In noma casea, notably St. Paul, New
York Central, Reading and Norfolk
Western.
The day's losses In the active list were
hot greater than are frequently shown dur
ing an active selling movement, the range
running generally within 1 to 3 points. But
In the inactive list and especially amongst
stocks regarded as of a high Investment
grade there were some drastic cuts in mar
ket values. In many cases these compare
with long standing quotations made on all
sales and resulting In the marketing of
comparatively small blocks of stock. The
Inference is plain that these represent a
sort of revision -of book values. While the
assumption is warranted that such sales
are made to supply the urgent money re
quirements, there is a posxlbillty also of
the attraction of the present rates In the
open money market. Inducing the selling
ui wiuniirn ia employ iunas in mat way.
This Is the natural process bv which prices
of securities adjust themselves to the level
of the money market. That money Is at
present in active demand at high rAtes
and is likely to continue so for a consider
able penoa is a just Inference from the
phenomena In the money and stock markets.

NEW YORK, July 16. coi-iTjiN Maraei
opened steady at an advance of 2Q17 points
under better Liverpool caotes man ex
pected and covering, but almost Immedi
ately turned easier and thereafter ruled
Irregular, though only moderate active and
almost totally lacking In the sensational
features which have recently marked spec
ulation. The decline following the Initial
advance was due to a renewal of Wall
street pressure and a report that cotton
was being shipped here from Liverpool for
dollvery on contract also exerted somewhat
of a sentimental Influence, causing unload
ing by some longs. After losing 6&J0 points,
or declining to a level net 4 points lower to
12 higher, there was a rally on bull support 1
in the nearby months attended by fresh
reports of crop damage from private
sources, which as usual were more or less
conflicting. Prices were forced upward,
however, until around midday they were
net MMqM points higher. From this there
waa another decline In the afternoon under
fresh Wall street pressure encouraged by
the weakness of the stock market and the
liquidation ot long accounts, which car
ried quotations back to about the previous
low point. Toward the finish, however,
there was another raMy under covering and
buying orders, supposedly for the account
of New Orleans bull contingent, which
closed the market v.y steady at a net
advance of 717 points.

rUTTT.icTher wss a light run of cattle
here today for a Wednesday and ths mar
ket could be quoted Just about steady with
yesterday." Trading was not particularly
brisk, but still the cattle kept changing
hands and the bulk of the offerings was
soon disposed of. '
The beef steer mantel snowea very mum
nhonte, rmm vesterdav. The better grades
sold without much trouble at steady prices.
but those that were a lime on in quaiuy
were neglected, and some salesmen thought
they did not get quite enough money for
thM class. The quality of the cattle as a
hni. nnv rantlni forward Is not as good
as It has boen, so the market looks worse
on paper than it really Is as compared with
ten day or two wwu s.
The cow market was also about steady
with yesterday. Th better trades were
ready sellers at fully as good prices as
h.v. htn nald of late, but the grassers
sold at very uneven prices the same ss
usual. Borne sales looitea Detter, wnue own
ers were not as good, so that taking the
average sa'.es there wsa not enougn change
to be wormy oi mention. Miniinu .
. difficult matter to dlsDOse of the common
stuff at any price, as the demand from
packers Is limited.
Li,,n. ni calves and stars all sold In
about the same notch as they did yesterday.
There is notning new to no .iu i iui;
ere and feeders. The supply continues very
light, while tne aemana anew uuiitu, u
there Is no particular change, from day to
day, and in fact not enough business Is
being transacted to make a market. Rep.
