PROTEST AGAINST LOW RATES
Will Ba Conaldered at Meeting- af
Western Passenger Assoclatlea
Next Week.
The meeting of the Western Passenger
association, to be held at Macklnao on July .
13, promises to be one of great Importance.
It Is understood that several of the roads
In the association are going to protest
against the giving of any more low round
trip rates. They declare that, while the
giving of these rates has worked a large
Increase In passenger traffic. It has de
moralized the regular one-way ratea.
Through the manipulation of the Tetura
stuba by scalpers the sale of regular one
way tickets has dropped off.
The protesting roads argue that the reve
nues from passenger trafflo are aa great
when the ratea are not ao low and that lesa
people are carried by the roads, conse
quently making the expenses for handling
the buslnesa lesa. There la little profit In
the handling of passenger traff.o en the
long hauls and the roads feel that every
thing to keep down this drain upon their
revenues ahould ba dona.
The greater number of tha reads are not
In favor of refraining from giving low ratea
for apeclal events. Most ot the ratea for
this summer and fall have already been
granted and no action taken by the asso
ciation can have any far reaching effe
on tourist business before next year.
