CRESTON, la., July I. (Special Tele
gram.) The second day of the trip of the
Omaha Jobbers' excursion has brought no
rain In Its path, but the corn-making
weather is equally acceptable.
The trip this morning took In forty-seven
miles of the Burlington north of Creston.
This forty-seven miles," said Division Su
perintendent Davenport "deliver to , our
railroad more cars of grain and live stock
than any forty-seven miles on the Burling
ton system."
The towns along this stub line, though
small, are decidedly prosperous with a
farming and stock raising section back
of them unequalled anywhere in the world.
Corn looks better here than In any part
of territory covered so far. Stock cattl
fairly wallow In rloh blue grass. It la
farms like these that make good Iowa's
boast a the best agricultural state, in the
Union. '" '
Tha only competition Is Davenport Ot
tumwa and Ds Moines. The rates ar
equal to Des Moines and better than to
any other point. ' Omaha ought to have
their trade and from the kindly expres
slons everywhere there is little doubt but
that this territory will greatly, increase the
trade of Omaha Jobbers If properly cult!
vated.
Breakfast at Cumberland.
Tho party breakfasted at Cumberland,
where a brass band welcomed thsm at tha
sutlon. They were given a very, hearty
reception by the merchanU.
Tcn-mlnut stop at Brldgewater and
Fontanelle were hardly long enough, delay
ing the schedule. In rounding up a town
everyone scatters to see their customers
and in Massing see that everyone, big and
small, ecftve buttons and souvenir. Then
the band starts up and soon tha whole town
is surrounding them. Tha most fun of all
Is to see Dunlap impersonating Omaha's
only demooratlo councilman, Dave O'Brien,
as he scatters samples of candy to the
girls and youngsters. Whether O'Brien
will stand for the doings of his double may
be a question for argument
At Greenfield tha cltlsens turned out with
carriages and a committee met the train
at Fontanelle. The town did Itaelf proud
In taking care of the party and wra voted
the best hosts along th northern rout.
The return to Creston Is for lunch only,
from which town tha excursion head for
Missouri. .
Get Over Into Mlssoarl.
MOUND City, Mo., July 9. (Special Tel
egram.) After leaving Creston th excur
sion of Omaha wholesalers spent th after
noon irt getting acquainted with th mar
chants of southeastern Iowa. Indeed, so
well pleased were they with their new
found friend that," although behind tlm
at each stop, they used more than th al
lotted time, resulting . In putting the ex
cursion almost three hours behind on their
schedule. , After a brief stop at Kent th
first stop of consequence was at Lenox.
A committee of Lenox people escorted th
crowd from Creston and other hospitable
cltlsens met them at the depot with car
riages. The Twenty-second Infantry band
entertained quite an audience in front of
tha postofflce while the party reviewed the
homes of one of Iowa's prettiest towns
from carriages. ,
At each station a welcoming crowd
greeted th excursionists, who visited at
Conway, Shsrpsburg. Gravity, Tagoda and
New Market Instead of stopping ten min
utes It was usually fifteen or twenty min
utes. Clarlnda showed its loyalty to
Omaha by turning out with a long line of
carriages to take care of the guests. The
band proceeded to the court house yard and
captured tha crowd as usual. Mayor Fos
ter spoke a few well-chosen wprds of wel
oome from, the court house steps, to which
Charles C. Rosewater responded In ex
pressing the appreciation of the Omaha
visitors for the hospitality shown. Sham
baugh, Braddyvtlle and Clearmont com
pleted the towna in Iowa before crossing
Into Missouri. It was dark before reaching
Burlington Junction, Quitman, Skldmore
and Mattland, and 10 o'clock before reach
ing Mound City for supper. Th train was
sidetracked at Mound City for ths night.
The party will return to Omaha Friday
night after completing the campaign laid
out in northern Missouri and southeastern
Iowa.
