Ahend of Constitution.
NEW YORK. June 19. If Constitution did
not defeat Reliance on time allowance In
a twenty-five-mile race over the course of
tha Indian Harbor Yacht club In Long
Island Sound today. It gave admirers of
the new boat a bad scare. In more than
four hours' sailing. Reliance outsailed Con
stitution by only .1 minute 60 seconds,
elapsed time. It is estimated that the new
boat will have torillow Constitution two
to three minutes 1 In a thirty-mile race,
which, If true, would Iglve today's race to
the older boat and might give it one of the
earlier races as well, when Reliance neat
It by two minutes and a fraction. Colum
bia was again outclassed from the start.
Between the leaders the race was hotly
contested, first one and then the other get
ting the better of it by sudden shifts of
wind, which, when it began to blow
steadily, left Reliance about one minute
ahead.
Constitution's fast sailing today was all
the more remarkable and makes It all the
more formidable from the fact that the
race was sailed In light winds and smooth
water, under which conditions Reliance has
often beaten It.
The-' course was a triangle, ten miles
across the sound, five miles over to the
Connecticut shore and ten miles along that
shore to the finish line. Summary:
