Discount rates: Short bills. 2H per cent; three months' bills, 3V per cent NEW YORK STOCKS AXD BOSDS. Market Opens Weak, Gains Strength anal Closes Higher. NEW YORK, June 19. After a weak op ening this morning the stock market de veloped a degree of strength and closed higher than last night, net gains running to a point or over In the most Important speculative stocks. Tho trsdlng became In tensely dull and approached stagnation at time of the higher range of pi Ices, and the close was heavy, but only slightly bo low the best The day's dealings barely aggregated doO.OtO share and there was a considerable congestion of operations In Rending, the United States Steel stock and Atchison. The steel stocks were under pressure at the opening and had declined sharply In London before trading began here on what was alleged to be selling for the account. There Is a general conviction that the liquidation which had been going on in these stocks Is due to the special needs of a largo Interest In the corporation and there was Indication today that the stocks being sold represented collateral for a large loan. The decision of the United States Steel authorities to maintain the schedule of prices at this year's level and the official assertion that large orders for steel rails for 19u4 had been boked, gave an upward Impetus to the stock. The common touched 80. but closed at 29H, and the preferred closed at the top price at 30. After a rally had set In for stocks the second mortgage bonds were forced down by considerable selling orders to 83, with a fractional recovery at the last. The coilcr were keening up with the upward move ment and buying of them was attributed to a speculative combination of profes sional operators. Rumors circulated of a very favorable showing of net earnings for May by Reading, while the upward move ment was In progress; The rise reached t points In Reading. Atchison was also In conspicuous demand and was helped by favorable reports regarding crop proopects. The decline In the cotton marKet was a favorable factor for the whole list. So was the prospect of a favorable bunk statement, although the money marKet has little im mediate Influence on the stock market ow ing to the disappropriate ease of cull loans as compared with the time loan rates, which are firmly held. With a gain for the banks on the subtreasury operations of $l,3t,U0O, due principally to the high rate of disbursements on account of the pen sions, tho Indications that receipts on bal ance on the interior movement have been sufficient to bring the net gain for the cash Items of the banks up to $i,OJU,000. It Is not expected that the loan account will show any such contraction as that of last week, since the liquidation In the stock market has been largely suspended. But neither Is an Important Increase In the loan account anticipated. It Is hoped therefore that the surplus reserves of the banks will show considerable recuperation. As this Item wat small for the season last week, the prom ise of recuperation Is viewed with satis faction, especially with the period of semi annual requirements of money approach ing. Bonds were dull and Irregular. Total sales, part value, $2,210,000. United States bonds were all unchanged on the last call. The market opened about 2Vi 6c lower, the greatest decline being on the heavy hogs. Trading was fairly active for a time, but before 100 loads had been dis posed of packers became more bearish and the close wus slow and weak. The light and common hogs sold today In about the same notches with the mixed hogs, or, In other words, at $5924 and $.V95, where the bulk of all the hogs landed. The choice heavy weights sold mostly at $6.9714 and $6.00. Packers are no longer discriminating against the light weights to the extent they were a short time ago, and a choice bacon load, it Is clnlmed, would sell within lie or the heavy uoga The close of the market waa very slow and a good many heavy hogs had to sell arouna sales: Date. j 1903. 102.19U1.190U.1S99.18J8.1897. 19.9 1.5 Indicates Sunday. A shipment of three single decks of Texas grass ewes arrived, and they averaged 71 pounds and sold for $3.80. This is the first Texas sheep that have sold on this market this year, so there is nothing with which to compare the sale. Considering the prices being paid at other points, however, it was pronounced a very satisfactory pr.ee. Packers claim that the supplies they get at this market cost them more than at any other point in the country, the reason being that so little stuff Is coming here that they are forced to pay fancy prices for common stutr. GOSSIP, OF COMMISSION ROW l'oiBg C&lcks Commnnd Figure that rats Their Fathers Shame. The sprightly spring chick Is still tanta- llzlngly out of reach of the honest lover of chicken flesh, but the old and portly hen has settled to the level where she may be had for considerable less than a king's ransom; a little less even than the dining car table d note. The old man rooster, notwithstanding his clear voioe and defiant eye, Is now hardly worth stealing. The hen market has declined to 9 cents a pound for birds of the most prepossessing figure, partly beer. use the spring crop of chicks has reached an sge when the youngsters can be trusted to go to market by them selves and the watchful care of the old ones Is no longer necessary. The broilers still go at 18 or 19 cents to the pound and the family heads are humiliated by a 6-cent rate. It is said that almost any deserving person can taste the young bird after tho Fourth of July. Eggs are asserting themselves and are now at 13V4 or 14 cents. Not so many are now doing their summer shopping In this city. Probably the large number of hens who have come to market has had some effect in causing a falling off tn eggs and then some other markets are lust now paying a higher price for the honest and Industrious article. Butter Is just about the same. HV4 cents to the pat for wholesale. The process houses are taking all that ts offered now, which they place In a cool location until fall, when the working season begins. In the good old days, say fifteen years ago, before the butter union was established, an excel lent article sold to retailers at 6 or 7 cents. Then when butter came to town It had to stand or fall on Its own personal strength. But now the process reforma tories take In tne vicious and reckless comers and after a course turn out butter which la a good citizen. Av. Av. . 50 . 64 . 43 . 72 . 67 Pr.
