The corn pit was again the renter of Interest on the Mrnird of 'j rade today and prices ahowpd Rood nd vances, Julv cloalrfc Vic hlfcher and Sep tember 'ir higher. Heptember whf-nt whs up -c and oats a shade, better, while provlnlona wore unchanged to "ViSlOc higher. Trading In wheat wna fairly active and the market wa atrong the entire aeaalon. Opening prices were a ahnde higher, July t TUe to li"i'n"ir, and September a ahade lower to a abode higher at 74Mt'474i4C. A riither ensv teellng prevailed ahortly after the opening, due to free aelllng by commis sion Wises, the favorable weather being tho chief fartor. t'nder this Influence July aold off to Wr.c and September to 74c, but the weakneaa was short-lived, the strength In corn wion bringing about a rally. Hul llsh crop reports from the southwest and northwest, as well as bad reports from France, aided the upturn and the market became strong, July advancing to 7!c and September to 7jSc. liquidation was quite general the last hour and much of the ad vance waa lost, July closing at 76Sc, a tain of Sfc'oVic. September was up St t I4(ff78c. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 174. lull bushels. Primary re ceipts were ZtS.Hno bushels, sgalnst 3X4.400 bushels a year ago. Minneapolis and Duluth reported receipts of ZW cars, which with local receipts of 28 cars, none contract, mado total receipts for the three points of 314 cars, against i6 cars last week and 274 a year ago. . The price of corn continued to soar ana advances of over a cent were made In both the Julv and September deliveries, though most of the gain was lost before the end of the seRslon. The volume of business was exceedingly large and although there was heavy liquidation going on the greater portion of the time the offerings were (Illicitly abForbed, and not until within the Inst hour did prices show any weakening. Sentiment alone was responsible for the bull demonstration, as the wenther condi tions were most favorable, with prospects of a continuation of the same. Country offerings were small and cash demand good. After selling between RAVic. and BIHc Julv closed He higher at HWfcc. September closed with a gain of Wcat BOJfcc. after ranging between 49c and V)c. Local re 4S5 cars, with 3 of contract g The excitement In corn overshadowed all other features In oata and caused a strong rmirket throughout the day. Trading wns active nnd rrcneral. with shorts covering freely on the upturn. The snles of July at 8 rue brought the market down to another new low level, the lowest previous price having been reported yesterday, when July sold at 1.60c. SEW YORK STOCK AID DOIDJ. Oreat Body of Securities Star Su preme! j Stagnant All Hay. NEW YORK, June IS There were a few Indlvldiuil stocks In which active trading and wlae movements mnde cross-current. In the stock market today, put the greit body of securities listed for trading on t le exchange was suignant. The market started off with some r-how of stiength with the Influence of the reduction In the rate of discount of tho Hank of Kngland to 3 per cent and the eiiRler tone of pilvat" discount In response. A higher rnncc of quotations for Americans as a consequence ! vlvanla-Gould dlsp been adjusted, it was possible to secure otltclal admissions that efforts to this end were being made, but these seemed to be by outside Interests rather than by mutiiHl approach of the two patties to tne differ ence. Tho progress ot subscriptions to the new Pennsylvania stock had a favorable effect on Its market value as well. When It was learned that the price of cotton was running off sharply, the professional op erators In stocks Indulged the hope that they would be able to force an upward turn, but they met selling pressure and had to abandon the attempt. This selling was especially acute In Metropolitan. Street Railway, Metropolitan securities snd the Iron and steel st cs the selling being notably large in I'niied States Steel, both common and preferrej. The former touched 2'n and the litter ex ceeded Its previous low record of 7f by a fall to 78". The presence In the market of a largo and persistent selling order In United States Steel was the urensinn of much surmise as to Its source. The whole group was depressed by the admlss ons made by an authority In the trade tnat concessions made in the price of Iron did not yet tempt consumers and that conces sions are being quietly made by some of the larger ntereats in the steel market. A further reduction In the price of iron was announced during the day. The Inci dent ot a ucltyed payment of maturing obligations by the Colorado Fuel company was a continuing factor of depression in the whole group. Colorado 1' uel Itself dropped at one time 2, but recovered the greater part of that loss. The weakness of Metropolitan Street Railway and of Metropolitan Securities was directly trace able to the statements regarding the com pany's earnings made by its president on the witness stand. The drop in Metropoli tan Street Railway reached 8 and In the securities company 3, with a partial re covery In both cases. The efToct of tne Bank of England discount rejuction was partly offset. by the continued strength of sterling here, nnd Its weakness in Berlin and Paris. The Inference seems to be dis position on the part of Berlin and Paris to withdraw capital from London on account of the reduced Interest rate with an at tempt on the part of 1indon to divert the demand upon New Ifork. Money here con tinues easy and the banks are gaining from the subtreasury and It Is beileved from the Interior as well. Rates for time loans, however, arc firmly held, and 5V4 per cent Is demanded for loans over the year end. The ease of call money Is said to be due to the fact that large provision has been made by many Interests in the way of time loans to guard against the period of stringency and In the meantime keeping the proceeds of these time loans out at call on stock collateral. The mar ket closed intensely dull and weak and near the low level of the day, with losses of about 1 point In a number of leading stocks. Bonds were weak. Total sales, par value, $1,604,000. United States bonds were all unchanged on the last call. Following are the Quotations on the New York Stock exchange: AtchlKin 65 So. Rlilwir p4 MTt do Dfd (4 Taxai & Pacific IS Bl. A Ohio Toledo. July, which had opened st 12.10c, sold up to 12.2JC. and August reached 11.8Sc under these In fluences, while the new crop months also showed sympathetic recoveries. Sentiment, however, seemed more bearish than at any time of late and when the estimates for tomorrow's receipts at New Orleans were received shownrr r full movement to be expected, the late positions again sold off sh:irply, while the other crop displayed considerable resistance, but nevertheless worked lower. Speculation, except right at the opening, wns not particularly active and the decline was slow and gradual, be insr IntersDersed with occssionsl but sl'rht reactions right up to the close, which was within 2igt5 points of the lowest for the session, the market being steadied in the Inst few minutes by covering, though It still showed a net loss of lli?20 points. CATTLE There was a very light supply of cattle on sale here today, aa about 68 cars were billed through to the north and were not offered for sale. The demand on the part of local packers was In good shape and owing to the small receipts an active and stronger market waa experienced The beef steer market could safely be quoted 6'alOc higher than yesterday on all desirable grades. Packers evidently had to have some cattle and salesmen made them pay good prices for what they got. The market was rather uneven owing to the rapid fluctuations of the last few days, so that some sales looked considerably better than others. The bulk of the fair to good cattle sold from $4.50 to 34.76, and the choicer grades sold largely from $4.75 to $5.0o. The common and part fat stuff sold largely from $4.46 down. The cow market was strong and 60100 higher In spots. The prices paid were more uneven than those ruling on steers and for that reason there was considerable dif ference of opinion regarding the market. Common to medium cornfod cows and grass cows were the hardest to dispose of and a good many salesmen who had that class of stuff could not see much if any Improve ment In the market. The more desirable grades, though, In most cases sold a little higher than they did yesterday. Bulls, veal calves and stags were In good demand at fully steady prices. Tho supply of stock cattle was again very limited and so also was the demand. The prices paid looked Just about steady with yesterday, but so few have been on sale this week that It Is difficult to tell much about values. Representative sales: BEEF STEERS.
