COATS RUN DOWN BY SWITCH ENGINE Was EsltiTorUg to Drive Fowls Out t Danger Whci Strode aad Crashed by the Pus Ins; Locomotive. In attempting to drive soms ducks from the railroad tracks to prevent them from being run over by a switch engine Mrs. streets was herself struck by the engine and severely and dangerously wounded. The wheels passed over her right leg below the knee, and her foot, necessitating am putation; fractured her left elbow and produoed a bad laceration on her arm and Injured her Internally. Mrs. Coats was at once taken to her home by tho train crew and her husband and later removed to St. Joseph hospital, where Dr. Bishop and Dr. Ramsey, the railroad surgeons, amputated the Injured leg Just below the knee. At noon the Injured woman' was suffering severely from the shock, and, owing to her ad vanced age, her injuries are considered serious. Dr. Bishop says that unless the Internal Injuries are worse than at first supposed she will recover. Mr. and Mrs. Coats conduct a small duck farm near where the accident occurred and It was to save her ducks that she was Injured. A switch engine on the Belt line was at work near where the ducks were feeding. Mrs. Coats and her husband went out to drive the ducks from the tracks. Mrs. Coats rushed onto the tracks as the engine was heaving In sight, but appar ently did not notice how close It was upon her. The engine crew called to her and attempted to stop, but too late. There is no claim agent now, and what is to become of the dozens of cam that ought to be looked up is a problem for somebody to solve. Tho Jury In the Morris murder case came In yesterday with a verdict of manslaughter as charged In the Indictment. The verdict Involves a maximum sentence of ten years. Sentence will probably be pronounced by Judge McPherson Friday, when the Linnler case Is taken up. The Jury arrived at Its verdict In the case about 8:30 Tuesday night. The case was given to the Jury shortly after I o'clock Tuesday and several ballots were taken prior to 6:30 o'clock, when the Jurymen went to supper and were directed to return to the federal court room at 7:30. Judge McPherson was waiting at the court room for them and the Jury filed down from the Jury room to the court room with the an nouncement that they could not agree. The question at Issue was the length of punish ment that would be Inflicted on the de fendant under certain verdicts. The Jury then returned to the Jury room under In structions by Judge McPherson to arrive at a verdict If they could, after a ballot or two, and then go to their hotel In charge of the bailiff for the night and report find' lngs to the court at 8:30 In the morning. The verdict was reached at 3:30 Tuesday night. The accused, Edward Morris of the Twenty-llfth United States Infantry, was In the court room when the verdict was an' nounced. He seemed somewhat surprised. as It was evident that he was confidant of acquittal. The delay In pronouncing sen tence Is to give the attorneys lor tne de fense an opportunity to file a motion for a new trial, it is naruiy yooiu,w ttib will be done, as the tact that Morris killed his comrade, Henry McKee, at Fort Nio brara on the evening of September n, isuz, is admitted by the prisoner, but only his unsupported evidence shows the killing was an accident, while several witnesses test fled to the fact of unprovoked murder. About seventy-five retail cigar dealers sre behind the slot machine ordinance Intro duced In the council Tuesday night by Mr. O'Brien. So far as known there Is no op position to the ordinance among the coun cllmen and Its promoters therefore expect It to be pasted next week. "Some time ago," said one of the cigar dealers, "all of the beat men In the trade realised that the operation of slot ma chines with rash priies and checks that might be played back Into the machines was a great injury to the business. A good many young men would play several dollars into a machine without getting even a cigar for their trouble, and of course some of them would get sore and walk out without making a purchase. So, you see, we have something of a selfish Interest In trying to put a stop to the check machines, but It la selfish merely so tar as It protects our customers against losses which some of them are unwilling to stand. "The worst feature of the machines, how ever. Is the cash play, which Is gambling pure and simple. Vpon Investigation we ascertained that the cash paying machines wore putronlxed as much by' boys as by men.
