Thl rata becomes effective Sunday and Is good also June 15, 30 and July I, with final return September 16 a remarkably liberal concession. On the face of It this announcement ap pears commonplace. Under the surface are Interesting facts. It is nothing- more nor less than the outcome of the skirmish be tween several lines over the rates to the Modern Woodmen convention at Indian spoils. All the roads will have to come to it, and, while local passenger officials ay the fight will go no further, there 19 a remote possibility that It may, neverthe less. Already the Western Passenger as sociation, which met in St. Paul this week, has Inaugurated cut rates of one fare to New York points and return. Start of the Conflict. The contest over rates seems to have originated when the Milwaukee successfully stepped Into the city of Rock Island, the central headquarters of the Modern Wood men, and challenged the peremptory claim of the Rock Island road to the transporta tion of the delegates from that and ad jacent points to the Indianapolis conven tion. The Milwaukee Is a member of the Western Passenger association; the Rock Island Is not. Following up this action other roads began to hew In on the rates until a fare of 110 for the round trip was announced from Omaha to the Hoosler metropolis, all the roads joining in by force of circumstances. Comes now the Rock Island, with Us characteristic Independence, and the Burlington, with Its native ag gressiveness, and first announce to the public that they are ready to accommodate the traveling public from Omaha to Chicago ' and return tor S14.75, which Is one fare, plus $2. Other roads will be compelled to announce the same rate. Local Passenger Maa Talks. Local passenger men expect no continua tion of the contest. 'There will be no war," said one. . 'These Chicago-Omaha rates were In last year and the roads will do well If they go no lower. No apprehension need be felt over them; they are all right. Teachers and others are making trips at this season of the year and the rates might have been put In had there been no differences over the Wood men rates." Bohemians Pat Off Bfetlnsr. The Bohemian turners' big meeting at Wllber, which was to have been held Sua day, has been postponed on account of wet weather until June 28. The Burlington has arranged to put In very low rates from Omaha and other points for that occasion, which Is expected to be the most eventful In Bohemian turner affairs of the kind in the history of the state. James P. Connolly has returned from Kansas City. "The story of the flood at Kansas City will never be told In full," said he. "for It Is Impossible for the people to give an account of all that was ex perienced. Wednesday the svldence of the power of the water was seen on every hand. One of ths most remarkable things was the movements of freight cars. They were thrown over the bottoms and on the slight elevations like cigar boxes, and are now lying where no railroad ever was or ever will be, standing on end and on their tops, some of them loaded with goods. There Is not a live dog In Kansas City Kan. Dead ones entangled with debris are on every hand, but few if any escaped the waters. The sewers were flooded until some of them burst and they now look as If they might have been torn ' with dynamite. Asphalt paving In large blocks Is piled egalnat the sides of hills and on the tops of houses. Work has been resumed at the packing houses, but only for the purpose of getting the houses repaired. While the waters have subsided the ground Is so soft that It Is practically Impossible to pass over-It with heavy loads and It will be some time before lumber and othor material can be sent to the flooded districts."
