CAUGHT IN HOTEL CORRIDORS Travelers Tell of Their Ofcaervatlaai In Various Parts ( the Coaatry. A. L. Preston, prominently Identified wlttr cattle Interests In northwestern Nebraska. Is an Omaha visitor. "The live stock In dustry up In the vicinity of Harrison Is In good shape this season," he said, "and we are looking for ft very prosperous year. We have not been bothered with floods of any character up there, but have had lots of rain, which Is putting the ranges In the very finest shape. There are some sheep coming Into the country, and It Is likely that some trouble will crop out sooner or later. Over beyond us, at Lusk. an ugly feeling Is growing against the encroach ment of the sheep, though the cattle are In ahead of them, and the sheep are being herded In small bunches In sections thst are not available for cattle. A very large number of cattle are being pastured fni the Owl Creek country, northwest f us. and they are In the finest condition. There Is no farming of any character being done in that section, as It la exclusively a cat tle country." Hon. A. Tt. McNIokle of Cortland. Neb.. Is In the city as a member of the federal grand Jury. Mr. McNlckle says of the flood conditions In the southern part of the state and about Beatrice: "The flood Is the biggest ever known In that section. The river at Beatrice Was two feet higher than the phenomenal flood of last year. The full extent of damage outside of the city of Beatrice Is not yet known, bult It will run Into the hundreds of thousands of dollars In the destruction of young crops, wheat, bridges, and so forth, ,. throughout the county. There was no flood damage In the vicinity of Cortland, as it' Is the highest point between Beatrice and Lincoln. Some few county bridges were washed out along the swollen streams, but the damage with us Is merely nominal as compared with the southern part of the county." Hon. Frank H. Wyman of Adams, Gage county, is In the city and speaking of the flood damage along the Nemaha river, tra versing the northern lart of the county, said: "We Were peculiarly fortunate about Adams. The Nemaha valley farms are damaged considerably by the 'flood, In the destruction of the newly planted corn snd wheat. The greatest damage Is in tha de struction of bridges, and the Inconvenience of getting to and from town. The railway did suffer, materially In our section. Be atrice Is almost isolated so far as the country roads are concerned. Bridges are out and the roads are almost Impassable from mud. We hare to go round by way of Lincoln to reach Beatrice at all, and that by rail." EMBANKMENT DOWN AGAIN South Side of the West Entrance) te Mlaaoarl River Bridge Collapses. Again has the railroad embankment Just at the west entrance of the Union Paclflo Missouri liver bridge collapsed. Following the collapse several days ago of the north side of the ' embank men f, the south side Friday morning went dowp, leaving oris shaky 1 track for all the trains, - passenger and freight, those entering the. Union and j those usually . entering the Burlington depots, to pass over. The last collapse took off a width of probably twenty feet, -carrying one freight track with It and put ting another one out of use.' One of tha WIUow Springs distillery cattle sheds was shoved over several feet and badly smashed up and an adjoining one damaged by the movement of the roadbed. Although the accident occurred as early as 8 o'clock In the morning Superintendent Baxter and Assistant Superintendent Fer ris of the Union Paclflo had .a large crew of men at work In a very short time and before daylight the Ions track remaining was In condition to .bear the weight of trains. Not a train was prevented from coming In or leaving tha city. By waiting on each other all, passenger and freight, are enabled to pass without mishap. Big steel cars loaded with dirt and cin ders were quickly on the scene and great headway Is being made) toward filling tn. As the south aide Is' pot yet, of course, In shape much time will be required to re. store the embankment to Its normal condlJ tlon. Before It can be done Superintendent Baxter says tha entire region must be thor oughly drained, as the water from tha old artesian well creates constant seepage and the weight of the water, the embankment Itself, with the heavy trains, will keep on causing the removal of the roadbed. He disagrees with the theory that ' a bed or layer of feoapstoae underlies the embank ment. If thla were the esse, he says, the collapse would be downward, instead, of putward as all have been. ' ah inn nuriingion trains must pass through the Union depot until the laat col lapse ls overcome and the tracks are re stored. WORK ON FEDERAL BUILDING Foreman Itlach Comes fa) Oaaaha to Stir V'9 His 8abcoa traetotrs. C. H. Rloch, general foreman for Gindela AV Co., who have the contract for the con struction of the federal building annex, Is in the city for the purpose of securing. If possible, resumption of work on that build ing. Yesterday the plumbers employed on the annex quit and a telegram was imme diately aent to Mr. Bellamy of Bellamy At Hornung, the subcontractors, who la on tils way homo from the Pacific coait, reject Ing him to return as soon as possible and attempt to secure terms from the union by which work can be resumed. In the afternoon Mr. Rloch held a con ference with Henry Wlese, who has the contract for the brick work, relative to a resumption of business. The conference had produced no results at tha time Mr. Rloch was seen, but he said; "I am In town to start work on the fed eral, building If that can be done. Our con tract with the government calls for Its com pletion about the middle of January and If we could resume work under favorable circumstances at this rime we could com plete It in time. If this suspension ts per mitted to c ntlnMe there Is no telling what wilt be the result. Tha government makes no allowances tor strikes or lockouts and we are bound under our bond to complete the work on time. The men with whom ' we have contracted for certain parts of the work are under bond to us for (ts comple tion on time and we cannot tell what will be the result of failure. If we can get th government to be lenient with us we may be lenient with tbem. but. we cannot t4L Wa have threatened to abrogate the sub contracts and .do the work ourselves, bnt this seems to be a harsh measure that we do not Ilka to invoke. There must be some basis upon which tha contractors and buildings trades men can coma together aad It ta tha duty of alt concerned ta da ' what they can to make a compromise."
