Day's Sesslosu
CHICAGO, May 20. The wheat market
manifested consiuerable activity today ana
after rattier an unsettled session July
ciueed 4tuVe higher. July corn was up
Vc. oats were c higher, while provisions
ciusea irom a suade tower to 6c Higher.
Opening prlcea In the wheat pu were
atetiLv on 11 rm cables and small receipts,
July Toeing unchanged to 4c lower at lev
,4'c. Commission houses had plenty of
buying orders early In tne day, and wltu
uiiurlnga limited the market became
stronger and eluly advanced to 74tc, but
the better prices brought out heavy liqui
dation by local longs and prices again de
clined, July receding to 74c. A good cash
demand later In the day, brought about a
rally and continued reports ot damage to
the crop In the southwest also helped In
the upturn. The close was firm, with July
Vuc higher at 74Vfl744o. Clearances of
wheat and flour were equal to 3o0,2oo
bushels. Primary receipts were 220.3UO
bushels against 219,800 bUHhels a year ago.
Minneapolis and Duluth reported receipts
of 108 cars, which, with local receipts of
11 cars none of contract grade made total
receipts for the three points of 174 cars
Bgainat 90 cars last week and 106 cara a
year ago.
Trading In corn was' dull, due more to
the lack of offerings than to any other
influence, while the undertone was figured
to a large extent to the strength In oats
and to the small receipts. Commission
houses were fair buyers on unfavorable
wither reports and the selling was scat
tered. After ranging between 4470 and
4.S4C, July closed 4c higher at 444'&4oc.
Local receipt were 49 cars, 13 of contract
'outs ruled strong throughout the entire
session and trading was active and of large
proportions. Shorts were liberal buyers
and there was also a pood demand from
commlHslon houses for Investment purposes.
The sentiment was apparently more bull
ish than ever, the crop prospects being the
all-absorbing feature In the situation. July
closed with a gain of V at 34c after
selling between 34c and 3474c. Local re
ceipts were small at 75 cars.
In spite of the lower prices for hogs at
the yards and the Increased receipts, pro
visions opened steady and with a fair scat
tered demand prices showed little change
throughout the day. There was consider
able selling by brokers, supposed to be for
local packers, but the offerings were well
taken, the demand for lard and ribs being
quite noticeable. The close was steady,
with September pork 6c higher at $164.
September lard, a shade lower 'a 89053
.74f and ribs up a shade at $9.32ft(f9.35.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat.
15 cars; corn, 165 cars; oats, 115 cars; hogs,

CHirino M v 20. WHEAT The con
test In wheat today pivoted almost wholly
on the crop damage reports, and they were
here in aDunaanoe. xnera are inose on
" 'rhinm" who still Drofess to be Incredu
lous as to any great damage, and towards
the close there was a falr-slsed liquidation
rom this source, which cost tne market an
of its early advance. The volume of the
trade has been large and the outsiders on
both sides of the market Influenced, as was
the local talent, by the crop-damage re
ports. The news from the northwest waa
nt a favorable nature and largely offset
mora disastrous renorta from the southwest.
There was not muon neip irom caoiea ana
the cash demand was- very quiet, no sales
being reported. New York sold 14 loads for
export. Local receipts, 11 cars, with none
contract; 16 cars estimated for tomorrow.
Clearances, 801,000 bu.
CORN Country otienngs or corn voaay
were still smaller than those of yesterday.
which had a strengthening Influence. The
receipts, 99 cars, did not satisiy in locat
necessities and the cash market worked to
a level about frlo higher than yesterday.
Volume of soeculatlve trade was not large.
but the undertone to the market was strong
and . had the help ot covering Dy snorts,
hn nut out their linea on Saturday's heavy
eeentnnres. Of the 99 cars received 13 were
contract. The seaboard reports 1 loada taken
for export. Clearances, it,uuu du. Mumiuw
for tomorrow, iso cars.
OAT8 In all positions have been stronger,
the Mav selling up to 87o and the cash
oats c higher. Light receipts ware a
factor, only 75 cars, and only t of these con
tract, and a continuance of the dry weather
through Illinois added to the strength.
Trade has been large and round top figures
there was considerable profit-taking
enough to check tne anvance ana cause a
fractional decline from the best prices. Es
timates for tomorrow, lie cars.

general effect of the selling torblds the
supposition that It was entirely an at
tack by the bear party. It was not clear
In fact, what was the cause of the mar
ket's weakness. The meagre demands de
veloped yesterday, when declseively turned
upward caused bad Impression upon specu
lative sentiment. The decline has been so
long sustained without, notable pause at
any time that conviction has gained force
with the professional element that a large
short Interest has accumulated in the mar
ket. It was believed also that prices had got
down to a level that would prove attrac
tive to a large waiting Investment demand
when once some assurance could be had
that the decline had run Its course. Yes
terday's market was. cited as proof that
the point had not been reached when these
sustaining forces could be relied upon.
Despondent views were taken of the future
of tne market this morning In consequence
of this. The announcement of an engage
ment of 81,300,000 of gold for export and tne
news that F. H. Harrlman had undergone
a surgical operation met the market at the
opening ana Initiated the declining ten
dency. The enormous liquidation which
soon developed in Atchison was a marked
Influence upon sentiment and continued to
dominate the market for the rest of the
day, the influence spreading to an Increas
ing degree up to the close. Rumors were
circulated of a coming bond Issue by the
Atchison, but no cfficlai confirmation could
be had on this subject. The opinion gained
ground that a large speculative mlerest In
the stack was In a vulnerablo position and
waa being made as a target for attack.
it will be remembered that at various
times the securing of control of Atchison
and Rock Island was discussed as an alter
native proposition to the taking over of
the St. Louis Sc San Francisco. There
was a considerable speculative sentiment
In Atchison. The 'extreme decline In the
stock reached 3 which was equaled by
St. Paul. Losses of two or three points
were fairly general amongst active ytocks
and considerably exceeded that In cases
Where the permanent stocks were forced
to sale. A notable example of this was a
28 point drop In Michigan Central. This
stock was subsequently bid up again 10
point before an offering was encountered
and a sale made. Bear tactics were per
ceptible in the precipitate decline at the
last, -notably In the circulation of rumors
that 85,000,000 to $7,000,000 gold would go out
on Saturday to Europe, The only basis
for this rumor was found to be the maklnjt
of tenatlve arrangements for the shipment
of 8750,000 to South America next week.
The situation In the exchange market,
however, was a strong factor in the weak
ness of stocks. Exchange holds firm in
face of the shipment ana there Is knowl
edge of the early maturity of some large
German loans in this market, which give
ground for the expectation that consider
able gold exports to Berlin may have to be
made, A speculative upset In Boston
precipitated some selling in this market
today and shorts In the cotton miaket
were said to be selling stocks to cover
losses In cotton. Some stress was laid
on the buying of stocks for London ac
count, as indicating the growth of an in
vestment demand from that source, but
arbitrage brokers explain that much of
this buying Is due to a transfer of holdings
from London to New York to secure the
benefit of the present cheap money market
nere.
United States Steel Es continued con
spicuous in the bond market. Prices were
weak In sympathy with stocks. Total
sales par value 83,407,000.
' United States Bonds were all unchanged
on the last call.

NEW YORK, May .-COTTON-The eot
ton market opened at an advance of
points and ruled fairly active, but not so
active as during some of the days of last
week. The Initial advance was due to fur
ther coveting and aggressive bull support,
following cables which were sensationally
strong. The realising, however, was enor
mous and after prices had been worked
still further upward there came a break
of about 10j?18 points from the best of the
morning. On the decline rumors were cir
culated that aertaln Philadelphia Interests
and the leader of the late New England
clique had combined to oppose the full fac
tion and would stubbornly resist the ad
vancing tendency of values. Later this
was denied and, a counter rumor was cir
culated to the effect that New Orleans
bulls had 'come to an understanding with
Philadelphia spot Interests that would en
able him to accept all the old crop cotton
tendered.. This rumor gained general cir
culation late In the afternoon and was re
sponsible for one of the most excited and
spectacular advances recorded. Prices
meantime had beoome Irregular, fluctuating
up and down as the bulls, then the bears
gained temporary control of the situation.
While the strength at Liverpool had en
copraged the bulls, the large port receipts
and continued favorable weather proved
Incentives for fresh selling on the higher
levels, and from the higher points of the
morning the prices showed a generally
downward drift until mid-afternoon, when
May suddenly exhibited remarkable
strength under the efforts of belated shorts
to cover. That option was bid up to 11.80c,
July to 11.30c, August .to ll.&Oe, September
to 10.11c, and December to 10.25c, all of
these prices being new high records for
the season, ' with the -exception of July,
which was within one point of its previous
best price. Then came another wave of
profit-taking by room longs and the mar'
ket eased off to 10.94c. for. May, 11.2&0 for
July, 10.98c for August.4.99o for September
and 9.39c for December, the market closing
practically steady, net unchanged to 30
points higher on the -old and from 1 to 28
points higher on the new crop positions.
Total sales of futurea were estimated at
800,000 bales. Port receipts were 9,084 bales
against 2,883 bales last year, and the In
terior movement was considered bearish,
hut the southern DOt markets were firm.

CATTLE The combined receipts of cattle
at the different points today were again

a result prices continued downward. Trad
ing was very Slow, ana 11 was laie oeiore
much business was transacted.
The beef steer market could sareiy oe
ouoted generally a dime lower. The big
end of the offerings consisted of steers and
the quality was good, but buyers did not
seem to care whether they got many cattle
or not and as a result trading was slow
from start to finish. The prices paid looked
very cheap as compared with those In force
a short time ago, dui sellers couia noi pre
vent the break, as all other , points were
quoted lower. It now takes well-finished
cattle to bring 84.75 and the fair td good
cattle are selling largely from 34.35 to 34.60.
The cow market was also in pad shape.
and In fact salesmen could hardly get u
bid on .the good to choice cows and heifers.
All the buyers seemed to De anxious tor

strong and active, but all others were ex

some cases buyers were bidding much
worse than that, and In fact the market
was very uneven all around.
Hulls were 11 anytning a nine easier
owing to the weakness on cows and steers.
Veal calves did not show much change.
The demand for stockers and feeders was
very brisk this morning and supplies again
limited. The market could safely be quoted
atrona-er on all desirable grades. As high
as 84.90 was paid for a bunch weighing
about 660 pounds. The demand from the
country yesterday was sufficient to clean
up aH the desirable grades. Representative

HOGS There was a fairly liberal run of
hogs at all nolnta todav. ao all yesterday's
advance was lost and more too. Packers
started In here bidding fully a nickel lower,
but salesmen held on for better prices, and
as a result It was rather late before many
hogs croased the scales. Packers, though
would not raise their bids and the market
waa generally a nickel lower. The bulk
sold from 36.25 to 36.30, and as high as 36.40
waa paia ior a very fancy load. The com
moner grades went from 86. 3i down. Trad
ing was not very active at any time and
the close was very dull. Representative
