HEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS.
Lena- Stocks Spill Over aad Boost
Prices to Some Extent.
NEW YORK, May 13. The selling which
caused this morning's decline In stocks had
the appearance of a apilling-out of long
stock. There was no new development
today to induce this selling, which was
f robably due to a carried over Influence
rom yesterday's events. Authoritative de
nials of yesterday's report of a deep cut
In the price of steel billets at Pittsburg
by a leading interest did not put an Im
mediate stop to the selling of the United
States Steel stocks and those of the Inde
pendent companies. Discussion of the Iron
trade outlook was a leading feature of the
day's speculative situation. The profes
sional stock operators are not notable for
deep Information on technical topics, but
they paid much attention to obtruse dis
cussions in the Iron trade, which were put
out In some esses with the purpose of re
assuring sentiment. These discussions
mostly took the form of deprecation of
sny talk of discouragement because of the
current declining tendency In the price of
pig Iron, alleging that the highest level
recently prevailing was really artificial and
for special deliveries or other reasons. The
course of prices of stocks Indicates that
speculative sentiment was not entirely re
assured by the tone of these trade reports
In face of the concrete facts of a stag
nant demand for pig Iron. The threatened
labor trouble on the Great Northern rail
road system, and the fear that a contest
once Inaugurated might spread In the rail
road world, was a depressing factor In the
whole market. The early weakness of the
trunk lines showed that the Influence of
yesterday's reduction In grain rates from
Chicago to New York was still an Influ
ence. Baltimore A .Ohio did not share in
the heaviness of the group, and In the mar
ket's later rally It was marked up about
a point above last night. . -
The turbulent speculation In the cotton
market and the Illinois State Agricultural
bureau's unfavorable crop report contin
ued to exercise some depressing Influence.
More attention was paid also to tha no
table delay In the planting of the corn
crop. The prospect of additional gold ex
ports overhung the market and the per
ception that the day would pass without
engagements being made for shipment was
a material factor In rallying the market
late in the day. The conditions In the
International exchanges were apparently
the same today as when the engagement
was made on Monday for export. But
there was a material .relaxation today in
the London money market, due to the
progress of the allotment of the Trans
vaal loan, which releases large sums to
the market which were tied by the $ per
cent required in- making application for
the loan. If this shall put an end to the
outward movement of gold from New York
tnr tk nresent. tha result may be of Im
portance In the financial situation. The
recovery In the market was effected on a
much smaller volume of dealing than was
the decline, but It was Impeded by the
selling of Rock Island, which was per
sistent in face of the late firmness of the
general market. The close was heavy and
almost lifeless. .
The bond market sgnln showed great
variety with ft movement In some Issues
which have been dormant for a long time
The prlca changes, however, were still
Irregular. Total sales, par value, $2,445,000.
United States bonds were all unchanged
on the last call.

NEW 1ORK, May 13. COTTON Opened
firm at an advance of 4 to 7 points and
ruled more active and excited than during
any previous session this season. The
opening advance was the immediate re
sult of sensationally strong Liverpool ca
bles, which reported futures about 10f&13
points higher than expected, while cotton
was in good demand, with sales of 18,000
bales at 6d. This, coming at a time when
many In the trade had been anticipating
a declining rather than an advancing ten
dency, proved utterly demoralising and
shorts covered from every direction. At the
higher levels of the morning, however, the
liquidations by longs was enormous and
proved sufficient to momentarily check the
advancing tendency. Then there was an
other mad rush of buying orders, and while
the excitement at the opening had been
Intense, It was now surpassed and trading
was the most active every witnessed on the
floor of the New York exchange. The bull
clique, which had Sold so freely during
the early hours, turned Insistent buyers of
July and August, while houses with Euro
pean connections and New Orleans Inter
ests were also urgent buyers. Private ca
bles attributed the . advance at Liverpool
to demand in the absence of sellers and
to the demand for spot cotton, leading to
predictions that the tactics employed so
successfully in bulling the New Orleans
mahtet were now to be used by the Liver
pool hulls, who, it was thought, were en
deavoi'ng to get control of the spot supply
available In that market. Some disappoint-,
ment was felt at the early response of tha
New Orleans market to the Liverpool ad
vance, but later the market exhibited lead-'
lng strength. The spot markets throughout
the south were generslly firm and un
changed to c higher, but no sales were
reported from most of the centers. The
weather map was favorable and the move
ment ran over last year's, but these factors
attrscted little attention at any time during
the day. Toward the close some options
eased off under realising, but the market
was finally firm and very excited at a nei
gain of 10?i40 points. Total sales of fu
tures estimstea at l.uuu.uwi imieo.

CATTLE There was a heavy rijn of
cattle this morning at all the principal
market points and packers made use of
the opportunity to pound the market. All
points were quoted lower and prices here
took a tumble In sympathy with the de
cline elsewhere.
Beef steer buyers did not take hold with
a great deal of life and they started in
bidding fully a dime lower. Sellers at
tempted to prevent a break In prices, so
that trading was slow and it was late be
fore the bulk of the offering was dis
posed of. The most of the cattle sold right
around 10c lower than yesterday. Some of
the cattle that Just suited buyers did not
suffer quite that much, but on the other
band some sales of the commoner grades
looked worse than 10c lower.
There was not very heavy supply of
cows in the yards this morning, as the big
bulk consisted of steers. Buyers all seemed
to be In need of the stuff and as a result
prices did not change to any extent. The
better grades In particular were easy to
dispose of at fully ateady prices and even
the medium and common kinds sold In Just

There were only a few stockers and feed
ers on hand, but aa the demand from the
country so far this week has been very
light, probably owing to a large extent to
the heavy rains which have kept buyers
at home, the market waa slow with the
tendency of prices downward. Represent
