CHICAGO. May 12-Dullnesa pervaded
oth the grain and provision pits today and
wheat ruled essier, July closing iS,e
lower. July corn wm r. higher, with oats
up iff'-c and September provisions cloned
lVJ7vc higher.
There were no Important feature In
trading In wheat and the market was dull
the greater part of the session. The open
Inn prices were easier on easy rabies and
the moderately bearish construction placed
cn the government report, July being W,a
lower at 7i!V 72Vc. A little demand from
the big operators strengthened prices some
what and July aold up to T2V-. but later
prices again receded, the extreme dullness
being the chief bear factor. The absence
of outside business had a depressing In
fluence throughout the session. During the
lest hour a better demand developed due
to a big decrease In the world' a visible sup
ply, as shown by Bradstreet's. 6.3nO,000 bu.
for the week, together with bullish Illinois
crop repora and the market became firmer.
July closed hiffe lower, at 72lc. Clear
ances of wheat and flour were equal to
25,700 bu. Primary recelpta were 266,200 bu.,
compared with 173,4'") bu. a year ago. Min
neapolis and Dultith reported receipts of
88 cara, which, with local receipts of 83
cars, 1 of contract grade, made total re
ceipts for the three polnta of 116 cara.,
against 188 can last week and 123 cara a
year ago.
Corn showed considerable strength In
spite of the weaknese In wheat, higher ca
bles and continued rains throughout the
west having a strengthening Influence at
the atart, which was added to later by
good cash demand. There was a fair vol
ume of trade with considerable covering
bv shorts. Liberal receipts, with an Im
provement In grade, were the bear factors.
After selling between 4c and 4oV'345v4c,
July closed e higher at 45'ac. Local re
reccipt were 337 cars, with 34 of contract
grade.
There waa only a small trade In oats, but
the market ruled strong and the general
Sentiment waa bullish. Commission houses
bought quite liberally, but there waa no
special pressure to sell. A decrease of 16,
000 bu. in the standard stocks during the
lust week whs a bull factor. The close Was
firm, with July WSc higher at 32,c, after
selling Between uc ana o'jnisoiw:. urcw
receipts were 186 cars.
Provisions were lower at the start. In
sympathy with 10c decline In prices of hoga,
Kiit active hnvtnr hv brokers for the ac
count of prominent packera reaulted In a
rally. Covering by whorta helped In the ad
vance. September pork closed 7He higher
at Slff.6714, Heptemoer laro. waa up i-c i
$9.00. and rlba were also up 2Vic at $9.20.

NEW YORK STOCKS A.D BOSDS.
Early Languid Movement t'p Gives
Way Before Selling; Pressure.
NEW YORK May 12.-There was a
languid upward movement of prices In
spots during a part of the day's session of
the stock market, but before the day's
trading waa over selling had developed on
the largest activity of the dav, which will
peg out practically all the previous gains,
and established a loss of a point In United
States Steel preferred and New York Cen
tral. The official announcement of the
Rock lsland-St. Louis & San Francisco
deal was an influence at the opening, al
though the direct effect waa confined to
St. Louts & San Francisco. Rock Island
hung back. There was trading In the out
side market in the new Rock Island 6
per cent collateral hqnds when Issued find
the establishment of quotations at S'.'H'ffM
afforded a basis for estimating the ex
change value of St. Loula & San Francisco
under the plan at S2. The price advanced
from last night's closing at 78 to 804,
but suffered In the general reaction. A
belief that the suspended Hocking Valley
den! would be next taken up was re
flected in the Jump of 4 In that stock.
Delaware ft Hudson's 2i points advance
was attributed to the election of E. H.
Harrlman to the directory. Public reports
had It the Wabash plan for a Baltimore
outlet direct from Pittsburg were respon
sible for the strength In those stocks and
the Wheeling ft Lake Erles. The Gould
group generally waa affected In sympathy.
The strength of Colorado Fuel was con
nected with reports of Rockefeller-Gould
control. Covering of shorts byf professional
bears clearly played a large part in the
market's recovery. Their attempts yester
day to uncover stop loss orders having
proved unsuccessful, they were disposed to
retrace their course. The opinion which
greeted the monthly crop report added
to this disposition, as the deterioration In
the winter wheat crop was no greater than
expected, with a good promise of remain
ing a bumper crop.
The Weather bureau bulletin offered
encouragement to hope for ablg cron.
Speculation remained much depressed,
however. The postoonement of a strike on
the Southern Pacific was considered satis
factory, but the more serious outlook on
the Great Northern system Offset this.
Tha unbridled speculation In the cotton
market waa the cause of some apprehension
bv reason of the demand unon the money
market, caused thereby and the fears of
a curtsllment of consumption. The state
ment of April exports showing a decrease In
the cotton movement romosred with Anrll
of last vesr Indicated the detrimental effect
nf the high mice. The result upon the ex
change market from the curtailed cotton
movement. In view of the Inauguration of
gold exports, la also dreaded. Foreign ex
chsnge ruled Arm todnv and s further out
wsrd movement of gold Is looked for. The
reduction In the grain rate from Cblcaro
to New York wss a depressing Influence
on the trunk lines all day and this dTres.
slon became wore acute In the late sellinr
movement. The prlnclpnl sa-gravation of
the late break In the market, however,
waa a report from Pittsburg of a cut In
the price of steel billets bv the nrlnclp"l
competitor of the United St"ts Steel cor
tvirstlon. This report csrrled United States
Steel preferred suddenly down a point
under last night the whole market weak
ening In sympathy.
There wss considerable variety In the
bond market, but the price movement wss
Irregular. Total Bales, par value, $S.135.0flO
United States 2s declined on the last
call.

NEW YORK, May 12. COTTON-Th cot
ton market opened firm at a decline of 8
points to an advance of 1 point, with the
summer months showing the greatest
losses. Fololwing the call the market for a
time displayed further weakness under dis
appointing Liverpool cables, favorable
weather and larger receipts, but was al
moat Immediately rallied under further cov
ering by shorts. Trading waa very active
and excited on the advance, which carried
& rices back to yesterday's high level on
ay and to a new high record on July. u-
?ust and September, July selling aa high as
0.76c and aurpaasing the previous high
point by 8 points, while August showed a
gain of $ and September a gain of, 1 point
over the high record of yesterday and the
season. The bull clique were active sell
ers on the advance, however, and the
smaller longs also turned for profits, while
the favorable weather and improved crop
accounts encouraged selling of the new
crop positions. The New Orleans market
gave indications' of topheavinesa, and It
seemed that the scars of smaller shorts In
both markets had practically ran its course
for the time being. 1 Vith these demands
less Insistent, spectilmlon became less fe
verish, though the raairkst was at all times
Irregular and nervous and In the early aft

sales reaction to a level net 420 points

playing the greatest relative weakness. May

favorable and port receipts footed up 16,-

ing factors in the decline. rrom tne iow

CATTLE Receipt of cattle were rather
moderate again this morning, so that the
supply for the two days this week is con
siderably smaller than for the same days
of last week. Packers all took hold freely,
so that an active and stronger market was
experienced... ...
The big bulk of the offering again con
slated of beef rteers and the quality was
about the same as It has been of late. The
market was active from start to finish and
the prices paid were a little stronger. In
some cases salesmen were able to get a lit
tle higher pricea for the kinda that Just
suited buyers, but the general market could
best be described by calling it active and
strong.' Owing to the activity practically
all of the early arrivals were disposed of
by the middle of the forenoon.
The cow market was also active and
strong. Receipts were not very heavy, so
It only took a comparatively short time for
everything to change hands. The medium
and common grades of cows seemed to Im
prove the most today, but It should be re
membered that it was that class of stock
that suffered last week.
Bulls, veal calves and stags all continued
In liberal demand at steady to strong
pricea
There were not very many stockers and
feeders In the yards this morning and as a
result anything at all desirable sold with
out difficulty at fully steady prices. The
common kinds, and especially common
stockers, were neglected In very much the
same way they have been for some time
past. The demand from the country for
that class has been very light, so that spec
ulators are not very anxious to get many
on hand. Representative sales:

HOOS There ws a light run of hogs
here this morning, but th tendency of
prices continued downward at all polnta
At the beginning the decline amounted to
about tViil'T. but aH the morning advanced
the situation grew worse, owing to less
favorable reports from other points, and
the close was slow and generally a dime
lower. The big bulk of the hogs sold at
16 47V4 and Id. Ml. Prime heavies sold front
450 up to 46. SO, the top price being paid
tor a very fancy bunch weighing Ml
pound. The lighter load sold from $6.46
down. A was mentioned yesterday, pack
ers are not making as much difference be
tween light and heavy hogs as they have
been all the season, but Instead they take
3uallty Into consideration more than they
o weight. Representative sales:
