CHICAGO. May 8. A rfvrrMi of yester
day's wfiktifM wss manifested In the
wheat pit today and price had a stron
Upward tendency, July Hosing Vn7iic
higher. July coin waa up o, with oais
V(lc higher, while provlslona were un
changed to U'iiro: lower.
There wag a good trade In wheat and the
principal featuie In the situation waa the
absence of selling by the chief long, who
It la SB Id, about cleaned out his line of
July yesterday when he disposed of some
thing like 7,0,0iiU bushels. Opening prtrea
were firm on comparatively steady chIiIps,
Liverpool being off only a trifle, notwith
standing the severe break here yesterday,
and July was a shade to 'Vi''tc higher, at
7lV71',c. Selling by scalpers on the Im
proved weather conditions resulted In an
asler tone soon after the opening and July
old off to TlVtc. but a good scattered de
mand from commission houses soon
brought shout a rally. There were re
newed reports of damage from the chinch
bug to the growing crop In the southwest
and this together with the strength at
Minneapolis added Impetus to the upward
movement of prices, as did active covering
bv shorts, and prices continued to Improve,
the closing figures being at the top notch
of the day. July closed t'SV! higher at
TVie. nnd May waa 1c higher at 7Sc.
Clearances of wheat and flour were equal
to 397.W4) bu. Primary receipts were Jo7,
frK bu., against 24K.2no bu. a year ago.
Exports of wheat and flour for the week as
shown by Bradstreet's were equal to 8.202.
CO bu. Minneapolis and Duluth reported
receipts of 81 cars, with local receipts of
14 cars, two of contract grade, made
total receipts for the two points of 115 cars,
against 105 cara laat week and 04 cars a
year ago.
Corn was strong together with part of
the dav. but the volume of trading was
rather "light. Offerings were small earlv in
the session, but little liquidation set In dur
ing the latter half which resulted In a
sllphtly easier tone, hut the market soon
rallied again. Firm cables, a fair cash de
mand combined with reports confirming
the lateness of the crop were the chief bull
factors. After selling between 44H'
44". and 4c, Julv closed Ar higher at
4Cfcc. Local receipts were 228 cars, ten
of contract grade.
The strength In wheat was a strengthen
ing Influence In oata. but the main support
came from shorts who covered sales made
vesterdn.y. There was fair trade through
out the day, the May option being espe
cially active and strong. Receipts were
smnll. but showed some Improvement In
rradlng. Closing prices were Arm, with
Julv V.c higher at 32U,ffi32i,4e. after rang
ing between 31Te and 82Vc. Local receipt
were 118 cars. . . .
Trading In provisions was rather quiet
With offerings about equal to the demand.
Opening prices were steady on the hog
situation and buying bv the packers caused
a little better feeling, but the advance was
not maintained, the close being easier, with
July pork unchanged, nt 117.15. July lard
whs off 12n.re at $9.00, and ribs were
down 2Hc at 19 35.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat,

XEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS.
Desultory, Decline Condones, with
Partial Sharp Rally at Close.
NEW YORK. May i The stock market
continued the desultory decline which de
veloped yesterday and which was without
special explanation beyond the disposition
of the professional traders to sell stocks.
The sharp rally, at the close In some stocks
Indicated that the selling had been partly
for short account. Another professional
party, when they perceived that the shorts
were attempting to cover endeavored to
mark up prices upon them. This seemed to
De tne motive for tne rapid advance 01 34
In National Railroad of Mexico preferred,
which was without explanation. Amalga
mated Copper and United States Ruboer
stocks went upward at the last and there
was a sudden recovery In Delaware A Hud
son. The hardening In the market brought
some prices slightly above last night and
reduced the net changes In all cases to
small proportiont. The heavy tone of the
market In the early part of the day waa
partly due o the sympathetic effect of the
relapse of 24 In St. Louis Si San Francisco
and the weakness of Rock Island In the
face of reiterated assertions that the amal
gamation of the companies had been com
pleted. Tho weakness of the stocks might
be variously attributed to the failure of
the expected official announcement of the
deal, to disappointment over Its alleged
terms, to profit-taking on the completion
of the deal or to aurvivtng doubt whether
the project would be completed at all. The
Wall street public has been much bewil
dered oer all the successive developments
In this matter. Some of the Independent
Iron and steel stocks were weak, supported
on the soft tone of pig Iron market. Ameri
can Grass Twine was offered down from 15,
yesterday a price, to 12 before finding a pur
chaser, owing to the reports of the con
fused state of the company s accounts.
Denver Southwestern preferred sold at 10.
This stock has never been dealt In ac
tively, and recent sales of small lots have
been made at today's price, but the last
grevious pole of a run share lot on the
took exchange, which Is the basis of the
official quotation, waa at 60. There was also
a sale of United States Shipbuilding at z,
whereas the recent quotstlons have ruled
at 2 bid and 10 asked. The Indication In
these violent declines among dormant
stocks of the unmarketable condition of
some securities in the market had a bad
effect on sentiment. There was some
ground for supppslng that the transactions
were forced for this purpose. The foreign
exchange market continued very strong ow
ing to the continued demand ror money in
London In connection with the Transvaal
loan subscription, and It Is believed that
some gold may go from here to London di
rect next week. The movement of cash In
favor of New York on ba'ance during the
week seems to have been nearly 83,000,000,
which Is rather less than the recent aver
age, aa was Indicated by the weakness of
New York exchange during the week at
some of the Interior pointa. The large re
mittances abroad are believed to fore
shadow another large loan Increase by the
banka. It Is possible that some syndicate
transactions may also figure in this item.
The market closed firm at the rally, but
very dull.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par
value. 81.450,000. United States 3s, coupon,
declined 4 on the last call.

November and December touching a new
high level for the season. Almost Immedi

the list showing an advance ns compared
with the closing figures of the preceding

to 10.87c. with July touching 10.14c and Au

or the day sliehtly exceeded those of last
year, this leading to selling of the late
months, which were relatively weak dur

however, the ln-to-slght for the week fall

CATTLE There was a liberal run ol
cattle here today and In fact receipt wer
considerably ahead of expectations. Local
packers, though, took hold in good shapt
In spite of tho big run all the week, so
that prices did not suffer to any extent.
The beef ateer market' could be quoted
Steady to a shade lower. There waa qu.te
1 little unevenness to the trade and it wai
very evident that packers were not veiy
anxious-for supplies today, as the big rut
ail the week has filled them up In good
baps As a general thing the medium and
handy weight cattle sold at about steady
prices, but the heavy cattle were slow
ale, and. If anything, a shade easier.
Traders have noticeJ toe reveral weeks thai
Deckers have been inclined to Le 1 earl 11 01
the heavy cattle every "Friday.
The cow market showed very little chanb-
from yesterday. The big bulk of the offer
ings consisted of beef steers, so the supplj
rt cows and heifers waa not excessive
The better grades In particular sold freely
at steady prices, and If there was nnj
onange at an 11 was a weaurr teemis
on the medium grades. The tendency all
the week has been to buy the medium
grades lower.
Bulls held just about steady and veal
calves sold In yesterday's notches, but the)
are lower than they were a week ago.
There were very few stockers and feed
srs on sale and the demand waa verj
Hmlted. aa Is generally the case on a Frl
dav. The few cattle that did arrive lr,
most cases had to sell a little lower. Rep
resentatlve sales:
BEEF STEERS.
