Two lengths behind the winner came
Old England, owned by Green B. Morris and
ridden by Shaw. Lux Casta, the Albemarle
stables' entry, with Gannon up, was third.
The first horse won til, 180, the second

These three had the race among them
from the start. Articulate, pulled up by his
rider, the apprentice boy Larsen, when the
barrier rose, ran a remarkable race and
finished fourth, a length behind the tired
Lux Casta.
The fractional time of the handicap was:

MINNEAPOLIS. May 7. Albert AloniO
Ames, former mayor of Minneapolis, has
been found RIHy of accepting a bribe of
$800 while chief executive of this city.
After being out twenty-four hours, neia
by a disagreement, the Jury returned tneir
verdict late this afternoon. The usual mo
tions were made at once for a stay and an
arrest of execution of Judgment and a long
fight on appeal will now come.
Throughout the trial Dr. Ames has borne
up wen snd to all appearances nsa noi
seemed better at any time than during the
summing up by counsel. The defendant waa
on hand early this morning, while his wife
and the attorneys were In attendance.
There was a rustle of excitement when j

chambers and handed him a note. The Jury
was sent for and the crowd expected a
verdict, but It did not come.
Jnry Asks Questions.
Ths Jury had asked that certain questions
be answered which formed th basis of
quit an extended discussion In th Judge's
chambers as to the proper way to answer
them without doing any InJuBtlc to ths
defendant. The three questions put to the
court by the Jury were:
1. Was there any evidence to show that
Gardner collected anv rraft before Dr.
Ames left for his hunting trip.
2. Where and from whom did the police,
aside from Norbeck. set their orders to re
port to Gardner at Ames' medical office ?

The marriage of Miss Maud Peters to Mr.
Perry J. German was solemnized at the
bride's home In this city yesterday after
noon at 6 o'clock, Rev. .Mr. Mueller of the
Dunkard church officiating, (inly few ot
the intimate friends of the bride and groom
witnessed the ceremony, which was fol
lowed by a dainty rsptst. Tho young
couple have been residents of Beitrice for
some time and expect to make their home

Judge Elliott replied to th first question
that the matter of any money paid pre
viously was not In th caae.
Relative to the second the court In
structed that the evidence of Sinclair was
that the orders cam from headquarters.
To the third question the reply wss made
that the Jury should sssume from all the
evidence the fact as to whether the doctor
knew the money paid was graft money.
It was not necessary that Gardner told
him so. v
The Jury retired with this lnformstlon
and fot two hours Dr. Ames paced ths
hallway, smoking big black cigars, while
Mrs. Amee waited In the reception room.
Tho verdict came as a shock to both the
defendant and his wlfs.

WASHINGTON, May 7. Funeral services
over the remains of the Hte Bishop John
Fletcher Hurst were held this morning at
the First Methodist Episcopal church. The
sermon was delivered by Charles H. Fowler
of Buffalo and Bishop Charles C. McCabe
of Omaha, who aucceeded Bishop Hurst as
chancellor of the American university. Rev.
Dr. Henry A. Butx, president of the theo
logical seminary, offered the prayer. The
Interment was at Rock Creek cemetery and
was private.

A telegram has been received from Judge
B. S. Ramsey announcing the doath of his
brother, John Ramsey, which occurred at
Loveland, Colo. The deceased was an old
time Cass county citizen, having resided
on a farm near Cedar Creek until Ave
years ago, when he went to Colorado for
his health.
