Prices were VtWHc over Tuesday at their best, but this advance was all lost and thd market closed under yesterday's close.' There has beeir a general trade, -although It has been light and without im portant teature. On the late break there seemed to be no support from the Import ant holders. St. Louis market was strong early on crop complaints throughout Mis souri and Tennessee, but their advance was also lost later. The weather map was a favorable one, except on the Pacitlc coast, which ia getting no rain. The weekly crop summary said there had been some de terioration, but that winter wheat had escaped material Injury. English cables were a f ruction higher and Parla some lower. Clearances, 415,000 bu. New York reported only five loads for export. Pri mary receipts were 277.O0O bu., against 204,000 last year, and primary rhlpmenta were 422,000 bu., against 207,000 last year. North west receipts wrre 79 cars, against ICS last year. Local receipts, 40 cars, with none contract; estimates for tomorrow, 35 cars. CORN The market was tlrm early and Mt'V higher, but shortly before the close turned weak In sympathy with wheat and on a large amount of corn accepted late In the day by some of the elevator Interests. The sentiment early was mostly Influenced by the weekly crop summary, which de clared the early planted corn extensively killed by the recent cold weather In the southwest. I -oral receipts were 231 cars, with 12 contract; estlmatea for tomorrow, P'O cars. Clearances, 326,000 bu. New York reported three loads taken for export. Shipping sales. 100.000 bu. Cash corn was about He higher. OATS The weather and crop conditions have made a string oat market. At their best the futures were Witc higher snd the cash market was up VoSe. The mood waa influenced by the weekly crop bulletin, which stated there would be a decrease In area by the recent cold weather. Trade was large and general, and there was a good demand from May shorts. Offerings were In the way of profit-taking. Local receipts were only 79 cars, with eight con tract: estimates for tomorrow, 125 cars. Clearances. lfl.OoO bu. PROVISIONS The market orned nt bottom prices for the day. advanced on buying of July and September lard by Wolff, presumably for the Cudahy Packing company. Small packers soM lard early. Shorts covering helped the advance, while It Is believed there was good buying for long account. There was a small reaction on local offerings, however, and the market wa.i stendv. and looks as though It would do to buy on breaks. There were 27.000 hos and the market opened slow, S'fflOe lower, and closed lo? lower than yesterday's top price, $7.0,1. Estimates for tomorrow, 24.000 hed. Hogs In the west today. 71.100, against 66,200 last week and 68.700 last year. W1AKI, LUMi-AiTIt, St. I.onl Grain and Provisions. ST. LOUIS. May . The stock market today was so Inert that the utmost en deavors of the traders did not aff.ct more than fractional changes except in a I und ful of stocks. The promlne.it stocks wnich started upward on Monuay and early yes terday continued to hold 11 consplcoou.? position In the trading In the degree of their activity, but their small net chsingei In prices for the day are a strong indica tion that profit-taking was active. y going on In them under cover of the new points of strength. St. Paul, the Pacifies, Lou s ville, Reading, Erie, Baltimore c Ohio and other stocks of this c:ass ended the diy practically unchanged from last night's prices, though they absorbed a large pro portion of the day dealing". St. Louis & Son Francisco anil Roik Island were stron and active all day, with no apparent rearo 1 than a revival or old rumors oi the pur chase of the former by the 'atter. These rumors seemed to me"t with little credence owing to the suspicion that the movement In the stock waa designed as a cover for protn-takliig on other points. Stocks af filiated wltn St. Iouis A San Francisco, however, were quite consistently strong, Pere Marquette and Kansas City, Fort Scott & Memphis sharing; In the strength of the parent company. There was an ad vance of 1'4 in Illinois Central, which seemed to be supplementary to yesterday's movement In Louisville. The strength of Amalgamated Copper was nominally based upon an advance In the London price of copper. Brooklyn Transit enjoyed th-? benefit of published estimates of large earn ings from the Increasing summer weu..her traffic. Marked weakness was shown b th National Lead stocks, which werj at tri uted to rumors that the pr.nclpal c m petltors In the trade wre about to com bine. There were no notable movements outside of those specified, and there was a sharp falling off In the volume of the deal ings compared with'yesterday. The course of the foreign exchange kept the quesln of gold exports open all day. The steady advance here only kept pace with the rle of sterling In Paris, so that the expectel triangular operation by which gold would go to Paris was kept beyond the bounds of troftts. But shipments of gold direct t iondon began to come Into calculation when the rate for demand sterl'n got above $4.88. The Inquiry for cable trans fers was even more urgent than that for demand bills. The movement was clear'y due to preparations for participation In thi pending Transvaal loan. Every Indication goes to show that this loan will be heavily over-suDscriDed. so tnat intending sub scribers are putting In bids much 1 ti exce-s of their desired subscriptions In order that their allotments may equal their require ments. This process of over-subscription, of course, emphasizes the demand for ex change. With the opening of subscriptions to the loan which Is expected tomorrow there Is likely to be a sharn falltnr off in the demand for exchange. The lical money market was unaffected and offelnara on time were ra'her freer than heretofore. Tha market closed heavy and dull. There was a good demand for bonds, es pecially those paying 4 per cent or over on the Investment. Total sal-s. par vnlue. J2.- 150.000. United States 2s advanced H on tha last call. COT I ON Opened steady at an advance of 1&3 points on the near months and 1 point higher- to 2 points lower on the mure distant positions. Fol lowing the call the market ruled very Ir regular, the old crop months showing pro nounced strength under further covering of shorts, which drove May up to another new high level lor the season. The best prices were recorded just before the close, when May sold at 10.77c, against yesterday's high point of lO.tjdc. The advancs in the spring and summer options was due to a further show of strength on the part of the bulls and the rievelooment In the Julv option at New Orleans, which was generally attriDutea to trie oetur long spot situation there. The Liverpool markets, being about as expected, exerted little Influence. The opening prices proved the lowest on the near months and the close was within 1 point of the highest on May and July and within 3 points on August. After the open ing the new crop months still further de clined under the favorable weather reports and port receipts reaching over 10,000 bales, aa compared with 9.503 last year. Septem ber sold down 8 points from the opening, with the other months ranging from 1 to 4 olnts lower. For the three days this week the uupply Is about tha same as for the corresponding days of last year. The demand, thougn, was active, so that the market was in very sailsiuc.or conuit'on. Beef steer buyers seemed to have, liberal orders to fill and aa a result they were out early in the morning and the market ruled active auu lully steady from start to finish. The big end ot the receipts con sisted of steers, but In spite ot tnat tact there were very few left in first hands by the middle of the forenoon. The hanuy weight cattle were again the favorites, but still they did not sell much of any higher than they did yesterday and the tuavy cattle also sold to as good advantage ai they did yesterday. The cow market was active and, if any thing, a little stronger than It was yester day. A good many salesmen thought they got as good prices as they did on Monday, or. In other words, yesterday's decline was regained. That was not true In all cases, however, and the market could probably best be described by calling It strong and active, with some sales o'aioc higher. Bulls sold freely al good steady prices and the same was true of veal calves and BtSS. The stocker and feeder market was not particularly active, but at the same time there was not much change In the prices paid. The supply on hand was not exces sive and speculators bought practically everything 1 at all decent at Just about steady prices as compared with yesterday. Representative sales: BEEF STEERS. HOGS The suddIv of hogs waa again quite liberal this morning and Chicago waa quoted mostly a dime lower and buyers here also took off a Utile. The market here, though, was only a big nickel lower and trading was quite active at the decline, all the early arrivals being disposed of by the middle of the forenoon. At one time the feeling was a little weaker and quite a few hogs sold MjlOc lower, but the general market only shows a decline of about a nickel. The bulk of the medium weight hogs sold from 16.65 to I6.67H and the better weights sold from 16.674 to $6.75. The light weights went largely from 16.60 to I6.62H. Some of the trains were late In arriving, so that the close waa delayed until rather a late hour. Representative sales: No. 69.... 54.... 38..., 69.... Av. 8h. Pr. No, Av. 8h.
