Early Strength Is Lost, Market Re amlnBT Somf-Stasrnatlon. NEW YORK, May 5 The day's develop ments bearing on values of securities were rather favorable than otherwise, but this did not enable the professional traders In stocks, who were the buyers of yesterday, to partly realise their profits without turn ing prices downward once more. . There was a fair degree of activity In the market up to noon. In that time some 300,000 shares of stock were dealt In. During the latter part of the day the trading fell Into seml stagnatlon again. Borne part of the early activity was undoubtedly due to manipula tion to facilitate the taking of profits. Delaware & Hudson continued yester day's advance to the extent of IVi and St. Paul, Northwestern. Canadian Pacific and Iulsvllle were lifted at one time li?n4 over last night. There was n continued large trading In National Railroad of Mexico and In Reading, the last named ris ing at one time 4 over laat night. Penn sylvania was lifted as much. This stock sold ex-dlvldend of 8 per cent and there was an element amongst traders who bought It and Atchison yesterday on the supposition that the taking of the semi annual dividends from the price would make them look cheap and attract buying. But the buying thus attracted was not enough to offset the selling to realize. A recovery In the price of copper gave firmness to Amalgamated. Some of the obscure Industrial stocks were pushed up sharply In an effort to sustain the market after the realizing sales began to have some effect, but this maneuver proved un availing and there was practically nothing left of the day's rise at the close, which was heavy and showed small fractional net losses generally. The recent rise In sterling exchange came to a halt today, although the late market was Arm, and discounts In Indon were also easier. At the same time there was a sharp advance In sterling exchange st Paris, which was sufficient to wpe out the profit on the so-called triangular gold export operation. It Is not expected th?re fore that gold will go out to Europe this week, although a small shipment to South America Is Indicated. The strength of sterling at Paris is believed to be due to remittances to participate In the Transvaal loan. A number of favorable reports of railroad gross earnings for the month and the fourth week of April were without effect on the market. New York Central, Missouri Pacific, Louisville A Nashville, Southern Railway, Chicago Great Western. Norfolk & Western and Chesapeake & Ohio also made handsome Increases In gross earnings. The bond market was easy, but dealings were unevenly distributed and price move ments Irregular. Total sales, pax value, V. 202.000. 1'nlted States bonds were all un changed on the last call. May 6 COTTON-Opened steady at an advance of 4 points to a de cline of 1 point and following the call ruled very strong and at times excited under covering of shorts and renewed buying by the bull pool, which carried May up to a new high record of the season. The ad vancing tendency was encouraged In th first Instance by the ftrmnejs at Liverpool and further accounts of crop damage. Later It was accelerated nv tne sensational ad vance In July at" New Orleans, which gained a matter T' 17 points In the first half-hour or so. The weekly leport of the weather bureau, published at mid-day, firoved quite as bullish as expected, brini ng fresh buying orders. There were brief periods of hesitation and slight recessions under realizing, but the market generally pursued an upward course until May reached 10.68c or 5 points over the best pre- vlou sprlce of the season. July was then at lo.ooc, witn tne general list snowing a gain as compared with yesterday's finals of 5 15 points. Heavy receipts were generally expected, but still the supply was a little In excess of predictions. Packers, as a result, pounded the market from start to finish on all grades. The beef steer msrket was slow and generally a dime lower than yesterday. There ,was considerable uneveness to the trade, as la apt to be the case when re ceipts are large. The handy weight cattle of good quality were again the favorites and In some cases were not over a nickel lower than yesterday. The heavy cattle, on the other hand, were neglected and In gome Instances had to sell as much as 15c lower, so the market was sll the wsy from 6c to 15c lower, or generally a dime lower. Owing to the excessive receipts and the slow opening It wss late before the bulk of the offerings was disposed of. ...... The cow market also suffered a little, but the decline wss hardly as serious as on steers. Choice handy weight heifers were not a greet deal lower, but the fair to good kinds of cows and heifers were generally a dime lower. The msrket as a whole could probably best be described by calling It tjjloc lower. Buyers as a rule cut loose In good season, so that trading was fairly active at the decline. Bulls were a trifle lower, but still the decline did not amount to much and veal calves Jleld Just about steady. Tk. aunnlv nf feeders was not very large, but there were quite a few stockers. The demand from the country has been light so far this week, and as a result speculators tried to buy their fresh sup plies a little lower. The best grades held about steady, but others could be quoted 66 10c lower. Representative sales: BEEF STEERS. No. I.... 7.... 4.... W.... 11..., ... I... 4... to...
