Expansion of a Big City
How the Townsite
The average resident of Omaha wa al
ways apparently opposed to a eongrestlon
of population and ever sine th town was
first platted there ha been a uniform ten
dency to take th residences of people
from th business portion of th city. To
th restdsnt of th west, wber this, ten
dency Is more or less marked In every
community, Omaha presents but a enlarge
ment of th general tendency, but to th
observing people from Europe, and even
from th elder settled portions of th
United State this tendency of the people,
both of th working men and women and
those In more affluent circumstance, to get
away from th center of th city Is remark
able. Probably th other extreme of th
idea 1 best shown In th United State In
th city of New Orleans, where business
men of mors than th average mesns still
find their homes ovsr their places of busi
ness cr less frequently In the same block.
th business house and th residence both
constructed at th asm time and with th
object of economy of tin and space. Ther
ar com fin suburban homes In towns ot
this class, but they are not generally oc
cupied by men actively engaged 1 retail
trade, being th homes of persons as
sociated with others la larger lines ot busi
ness, r of retired merchants.
It was not at all surprising that th
original townslt of Omaha, which roughly
described could fce said to have been
bounded on the north by Nlehola street,
on the south by Pacific street, on the east
by the rlvor and the west by Twenty-second
street, wss too small tor the popula
tion, although capable of providing homes
for many mors than wer then within th
oorporat limits of the town, according to
the Ideas of people In more densely popu
-
lated countries. As rusult of this there
were msny additions platted to tbs orig
inal town, many of which remain as a
memory In the minds of the older citizens.
Among them was Park Wild, which la now
known under another name, and other
hav shared the asme fate, havln honn
platted before th owners had secured a
deed from ths government for the lend, the
plats having been vacated as illegal.
The first addition to the city of Omaha
of which there Is a permanent record in
ths office of the recorder of deeds Is Cap
itol addition, which was platted by John
H. Kellom, November 18, 1860. This ad
tlon waa south ot the cap! tot grounds and

of Omaha was Enlarged by Successive Additions,
was Intersected by Twentieth street. It
was In demand as soon aa platted, and one
of th peculiar feature of land In this
addition Is that there are perhaps fewer
transfers ot tills recorded upon the tots
than upon any equal number of lota lying
within the same distance from th business
center. Not that the lots were not de
sired by others, but they were purchssed
by people wh bsv held them for home
or who now hold them as good rental
property, while living themselves further
from th business center.
The second addition to th city, according
the th plats seen In the recorder's office.
Is Ragan's addition to the city ot Oman.
It was platted during the civil war, May
2, 1884, and th names of tbs streets given
at that Urn show evidence ot th time
at which It was orsated. The streets In
th addition were Yates, McClelland and
Grant, but neither th Yates street nor
th Grant street of ths present day. Three
months after Ragan's addition was platted
Augustus Kountse platted and placed upon
th market his Pint addition to the city
Mr. Kountse honored the authors ana
poets ot th day nd his streets were
known as Holmes, Whlttler, Lowell. Haw
thorne, Irving, Bancroft and Bryant, but
on would hav to look long to find those
streets In that location upon the present
map of Omaha.
Horbach's addition was the first to be
laid out north of the city limits, and was
on of the rapidly selling properties of
the day In which it wss new. It wss
platted June $4. 186T, two months after
George Francis Train had platted Credit
Ponder addition south of the city, which
was platted April 8, of the same year.

Nelson's sddltlon on Cuming street,
which In the official plat appeara as Cum

Joseph H. Nelson March 1, 1866, and
among other streets contained Center

was a long reach to th north at that time,
April T.
Hanscom Place, on ot th most success
ful of all additions to th city, wa platted
June IT, 183. It has th distinction ot hav
ing th most ornamented plat rscorded of
any ot the property added to th city. Like
all others who platted ground, Mr. Hans
com exercised th right of naming the'
streets to suit himself. Almost every one
knows Park avenue, a few Isss know
Georgia avenue, still less know Virginia
avenue, while Baltimore street, Duan
treet and Liberty street hav been for
gotten since being merged with streets ot
uniform nam or number through th
city.
In 187$ Boggs k Hill platted their first
addition on Farnam street, and It was on
of the additions which wer successful
from the start. In 1880 William Pitt Kel
logg laid out Capital Hill addition along
Farnam street esst ot 'Boggs Hill's ad
dition. It waa Instd property from tk
start. Patrick's addition, north ot town,
was platted In 1883, and was an addition
where values wer stable from th start.
The next year John Q. Willis platted Idle
wild addition, which bears th distinction
of being the only addition in which th
dedication of the atreets except th opera
tion of railroad trains over tbem, for Mr.
Willis recorded his well-known aversion t
rorpcrstlocs at that time by reserving th
right to grant railroads the right to
streets In this addition.
Of the additions platted In 1888, and their
names were legion, the on which main
talned values on a higher plana than any
other was probably Kountzs Plsc. wher
the price of land wss compsrstlvely low,
but a building contract making necessary
I he expenditure of at least $8,600 on each
hcuse erected In the addition, mad vacant
lots detlrsble for homes and prevented de
cline to levels reached by some addition
no less favorably tttu'ited, but wher no
limit wss placed on the cost of building.
Orchard Hill. Walnut Hill and "Beautiful
Cllflon Hill" and Bemls Psrk wer ad
ditions northwest of the business center
which were very popular at their Incep
tion and fulfilled to a great eitent th
hope of the Investors.

A CHANCE FOR A FORTUNE If you will
sena ror our letter ann Dooxiet on corn,
and Its market, you will receive a com
pendium of Information which will aa-
tonleh you and awaken you to a realisa
tion of an opportunity for making an In
dependent fortune, from a comparatively
small investment, in a very anort time.
At no time in its nislory has the corn
market been In the condition now Dre-
vailing, and those who take advantage of
the situation will make enormous profit.
We are corn specialists and devote our
entire time, attention and energies to that
commodity exclusively. No other broker
age house la in ths same position In this
market that we are, and we ar better
fitted to handle accounts for clients thsn
any other grain commission house In the
country. Acting on our advice, our clients
hav, In the past, realized thousands from
Investments of hundreds. Our advice to
day Is to buy July corn. On account ot
the short crops of 1901 this country was
unable to suDiily one-seventh of tha Am.
mend for export and the last crop Is of
such inferior quality that the greateat por
tion of It will not come up to contract
grade and therefor will not ha iomI "-
livery. Thsre Is absolutely no old corn In
the country and the Inferior crop of ltuf
will supply but littls more than a third
of the demand. Tha axiort demand nn
account of the fact that we were unable
to supply out a seventh part of It last
year will be much greater than ever and
in aemana ror ins oeet grade from man.
Ufacturers of breakfast foods, aluooaa
starch, etc., will eclipse all former reo.
ords. Th parson who buys July corn now
can make a fortune before July $1. We
win giaaiy extend you the accommoda
tlon of our unequaled facilities and will
nsnale your account to the best ad
vantage, giving It our personal attention
Your funda will be protected by much
larger added capital, and as we charge a
