May 1 There wss considera ble strength In the wheat market todsy, due to reports of probable damage to crops and stronger outside markets, and July closed firm with a gain of 4c. Corn showed heaviness at the start, but rallied later, closing steady with July up ic Oats were teady, July rloHing a shade lower, while provisions were down from lUU lf& 14c Shorts were responsible for the strength tn wheat, they having commenced early to rivr, and In the absence of any selling Sressure the market advanced materially, uly showed some weakness early after opening unchanged to a shade higher at I2e., and sold off to 72c on liberal selling, Induced by Improved weather conditions. The loss was soon recovered, however, and on strength In the cash situation advanced to 73c. closing with a gain of c at 727c. Trading was moderate, commission houses selling tc advance. Exports of wheat and flour for the week, according to Brad afreet's, were equal to S.tlVOoO bushels and clearances 320,000 bushels. Primary receipts were 832.M4 bushels, against 335.797 a year ago. Minneapolis and Duluth reported re ceipts of 153 cars, which with local re ceipts of 32 cars none of contract grade made a total of three polnta of 1H6 cars, against 167 last week and 292 a year ago. Apprehension In "long" circles on good weHther conditions caused a break In July corn after a steady opening, but a good demand soon developed and there wns a recovery, the market remaining st'atly the remainder of the day. Trade was rather light and featureless. Some buying by shorts, commission houses, and by brokers thought to be acting for Armour, wns offset by free selling by local traders. July opened unchanged to c lower at WcM5Vc, and after touching 44e, reacted to the high point for the day, where It clored at 45'itji 46v,e a gain of V". The cash demand wn fairly good, Deliveries Were 600,000 bushels. Oats were a trifle easier, with the Weather and Increased receipts. There wai some buying by the leading longs, but as a rule the volume of trade was small. There was some Improvement In the cash de mand. Crop advices were moderately bull ish, but Improvement In the weather offset this Influence. July closed a shade lower at 31ifi3174,c, after ranging between 31Nc and 31!(3-c. lcal receipts were 171 cars. Provisions ruled weak, due largely to the selling of lard by brokers and to liquida tion on the part of some recent buyers. The market was In tensely dull, and throughout a large por tion of the total dealings were In a few stocks, notably Pennsylvania. Missouri Pa cific and stocks of corporations in the city of New York having franchise privileges. The rise In the last-named group was gen eral. The declaration by the Pennsylvania directors of the regular semi-annual divi dend of 3 per cent was the occasion of buying of Pennsylvania up to a level above last night by the traders, who had sold the stock on an Irresponsible rumor that the dividend was to be reduced. Del aware & Hudson Was marked up rapidly 6H In the late dealings, without any spe cial neWS tb account for it Th rnnn,.n. trated buying and bMIng up of Missouri ! Canton, O r-aciiic was aiinoured to the pool which has long been Interested In the stock Some of the other Gould stocks sympith zed In ths movement. The traders took their profjts on a small scale during the Inst hour, and thus reduced the price level slightly, but the closing was steady. There was no change of Importance In general conditions to account for the veering around of sentiment from that of yester day. The quiet tone of th wheat market detracted somewhat from the anxletv lest the western frosts should have damaged the crops. The severity of the weather mnife mnra Impression In the cotton market. Ixuis vli:e A Nashville reported an Increase In net earnings for March of 1229.792 out of an Increase In grots of 1478,49s. The showing made by forty-four railroads which hav-i reported for the month of March is of an Increase of nearly 28 per cent on the net earnings, compared with March of last year. The week's movement of currency has again-been largely In favor of New York, even allowing for the 8600.000 gold shipped to Paris. I5O0.000 shipped to Argen tine and something near 11.000,000 to Canada. The receipts from the interior have over balanced these losses apparently, to the extent of over 83,000.000. The notable strength of sterling exchange was of ac count more than the currency movement. It waa agreed among the bankers that the lack of immediate shipping facilities was all that precluded exports of gold today. There 'Was a slight hardening in the call loan market to 3 per cent, due to the ar rangements for the regular Mav 1 pay ments of dividends snd Interest and to he payment of subscription on the 810.000.000 of new Erie convertible bonds which called for between 88,000.000 and I8.o00.0o0. The closing of the London Stock ex change waa a factor In the dullness of the trading. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par. value. 31.8OO.O0Q. United States bonds were all unchanged on the last call. The following are the quotations on the rtew xora biock exenanze: St. t.oala Grain and Provisions. ST. LOUIS, May 1. As a general thing, tnougn, tne tuna mat suuea pacaers sold to a little better advantage than they did yesterday, while the heavy cattle were rather slow and, If anything, a little lower. The cow market waa also quite active ana fully steady. Buyers all seemed to have liberal orders ana as tne supply wss not at all excessive It was only a short time be fore all the early arrivals were disposed of. The canners and cutters, of course, were rather slow sale, the same as they have been for some time past, bat anything at all good was easily disposed of at very sat isfactory prices. BHEEP There were onlv a few cars Ot sheep and lambs reported this morning, and several of them were late In arriving. As a result there was comparatively little stuff on sale at the opening of the market. From the way buyers acted it was very evident that they are getting hungry for good stuff and the prices they bid for the few that arrived Justified salesmen in quot ing the market active and stronger. As compared with the close of last week trad ers in general are calling the better grades 2612'dOc higher, but the common stuff has shown very little Improvement. Packers do not seem to be at all snxlous for any thing but well fattened sheep and lambs, and as the demand for feeders Is very limited the common kinds are a good deal of a drug on the market.
