Anrll 2S.-Today's stock market was similar to that of yesterday, except that professional selling came early In the day and the short covering later. Ycfterduy the buying came first and the realising afterward. But the whole market was strictly professional unless there may have been some dribbling of liquidation of small longs due to weariness with the persistent apathy of the market. The fic tion of the New York public utilities waa a striking evidence or me dominant pro fessionalism of the market. These stocks weakened sharply In the morning on the upposltlon that a decision would be handed down during the day affirming the validity of tho New York lax upon their ranchlses. immediately upon the an nouncement that- this expected decision aa been rendered, prices turned upward, owing to the efforts of the bears to cover their short contracts. The announcement of an engagement of IViO.OiiO In gold for export to Europe had been made the occa- lon for general selling, but the shorts In the general list were equally disposed to leave their commitments uncovered over Ight. The result was a show of exceed ingly small net changes. Most of these are on the side of losses, as the declines were not all completely recovered. Amal gamated copper gained for the day lhi. being helped by the rally in the metal market. St. Louis & San Francisco closed v4 higher on account of the report that the San Antonio & Arkansas Pass road had been acquired from the Southern Pa nic, although official disclaimers were forthcoming. New York Central rose narply at the last. Some sneclal weak ness was manifest in Southern Pacific and St. Paul was the cause of some eaeer con jectures on the part of the traders who professed to see signs of Influential selling n tnose two stocks. The approaching de parture for vacation trips of some of the operators in stocks caused a keen watch fulness for signs that they are lightening their holdings. Current gossip pointing to plans for some permanent retirements wing to conditions of health In the case of some conspicuous leaders gives addi tional force of Influences of this character. The export of gold was of merely senti mental enect aa tne present state 01 the money market Is one of growing ease. The principal demand for remittance by exenange at xnis time is tor tne purpose of paying off maturing Indebtedness on the part of syndicates and bankers simply be cause money Is growing cheaper at home and It is not believed that the large Inter ests concerned would be disposed to ship gold on a large scale at present In the re payment, or loans, owing to the bad senti mental effect upon securities of an out ward movement of the metal. The enormous profits disclosed by the windln? ud of the United States Steel un derwriting syndicate offered a subject for mucn aiscussion ana revealed the strong Incentive to the promotion of the great mergers and combinations during the flourishing period of the process. Includ ing the one-fifth Interest In the total profits which is understood to have gone to the syndicate managers as a commission, the total profits of this underwriting amounted apparently to 260 per cent on the amount of cash actually paid, the disposition to tne suDscriDers rooting up 200 per cent on the same basis. Today's bond market continued irrerulnr- total sales, par value, $1,500,000. United States new 4s advanced 414 per cent on the last call. In fact, re ceipts were the heaviest of any day ao far this year. Very naturally the supply was considerably ahead of expectations and packers made use of that fact to pound the market. , ' Steer buyers started out quite early, but from the beginning their bids were gen erally a dime lower on all classes. Sellers were Inclined to hold on for steady prices, but In view of the big run they soon began to cut loose, so that trading was fairly active at the decline. Buyers seemed to have quite liberal orders, so the bulk of the more desirable grade was disposed of at a reasonably early hour. The quality of the offerings was about tha same as It has been of late. The cow market was also about a dime lower than yesterday. The big end of the receipts consisted of beef steers, but at the same time there were a good mar.y cows and heifers on sale and buyers said they would get them a dime lower or not at all. When sellers finally made up their mind to take off a dime trading was as active aa could be expected on a downward mar ket. Bulls were a Ittle lower In view of the break on steers and cows, but veal calves held about steady. The demand from the country for Block ers and feeders was rather disappointing yesterday, and as a result speculators were bearish. Besides that there was quite a sprinkling of stockers ana reeaers inciuaeo In the receipt this morning. Tho best grsdes were probably not over a dims lower, but some of the commoner grades were considerably lower than that. Repre sentative sales: BEEF STEERS. Na. At. Packers did not seem to be very anxious for the kinds that were on sale, so the market was slow and 1015c lower. Packers said that they would have paid about steady prices for good sheep, but that they did not care to pay yesterday's prices for part-fat kinds. There were some Colorado wooled lambs on sale good enough to bring $6.50 and that was about the only stuff on sale that could be called at all good. Tha demand for feeders waa extremely light this morning, even at the very low prices now prevailing.
