PRICES RISE AND FALL IRREGULARLY Wheat mm Oats Drop, Cora (ion l, Wall Provisions Art Mainly la chtBfti, After Considerable oiling; by Loifi. CHICAGO. April 25. Trading lu tb (train and provmoa pa wn dull toaay and aa easier ton prevailed in wheat. May dosing C lower and .uly no lower; May corn was Vc amber, with July un cnangea. and May oata closed a (bade lower, wltn July uown .c. Provisions tcaa), the July product being unchanged to Kwc lower. Tnere waa little of conspicuous In the trading In wheal and the market on tne whole was null. Opening prices were easier, due to the lower cables and May was unchanged to o lower at 77S774c. but July waa a abade to Ha higher at 71 Wo) 73 e to 72c. The strength In corn bad a somewhat bull I eh eneel early and under thla Influence May sold up to 77ttc and July to 724C but the improved feeling was only momentary, for with selling by pit traders and brokers the market gradually declined. Late In the day quite a severe break occurred on acattered liquidation In tbe nearby months and May slumped to 74c while July sold ofl to 72'fi24c. Active support was lacking and weakness continued till the close, which showed a loss on May of e at 77c. July closed HHe lower at 72472c. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 85.00 bushela. Primary recelpie were 846,000 bushels against 216.000 bushels a year ago. Minneapolis and Duluth reported receipts of 174 cars, which with local receipts of 20 cars, none of contract grade, made total receipts for tbe three points of 194 ear against 10 cars last week and 188 car year ago. A good commission houae demand for both May and July corn was responsible fur the stretch which was manifested In the pit and with little on the market at any time the firmness was well maintained. Higher cables had a strengthening Influence at the opening and with a good cash de mand with small receipts, local shorts were considerably alarmed at the prospects and covered freely. The weakness In wheat had little effect on corn values and closing prices were firm. May being iHe higher at 45X4e and July unchanged at 45Hc Local receipts were 49 cars none of con tract grade. Oats started strong, helped by the bullish tendency In corn and on small receipts, but at the higher figures Influential sell ing by commission houses caused a reac tion and the market broke quite badly. July declining Vc Prices were eteady, the latter part of the session and July closed Ho lower at SVc. with May a shade lower at J44e. Local receipts were loo cars. There waa considerable realizing In pro Tlslons by local longs, but offerings were well taken by brokers and prices held steady. July pork closed unchanged at $17.47V4: July lard was 2V4o lower at J9.62V4. 9 85 and ribs were off a ehade at 19.65 9.67. Today's stock market gave abundant evidence that the professional traders hsd it entirely to themselves. The outside public was not in the market. The disposition of traders was plainly to get out of their holdings of long stork. Some stress was laid in the osb1d of the street upon a fear that the situation created bv Russia's new demands In Manchuria might develop a crisis. But the government securities of the nations most Interested cave no intimation that such a crisis might become acute over Sunday. Of more Immediate effect was the renewed weakness caused In Metropolitan Street Railway bv the Intimations of mat ter for Investigations by the district at torney's office In the affairs of the corpora tion. Metropolitan Street Railway Itself dropped 3 points: Metropolitan securities and the other , local tractions a point or more In sympathy. Tbe market waa mostly a waiting one until the appearance of the bank statement, which was regarded as favorable, although the cash Increase did not enuar the maximum estimates of yes terday. The loan decrease of $4,682,200 contributed to raise tbe percentage ot re serves to deposits, the surplus rising $4. 977. R25 to $10,985,474. Bonds have fared rather better than stocks this week In spite of dull market. Some buying of new bond Issues and of 4 per cent railroad bonds selling below par baa been noticed. United Slates 2's and old 4's coupon declined M per cent, the 8 s rerlstereu and old 4's registered one half of 1 per cent, and the 3's coupon per cent. For the week re ceipts are about 4,000 short of the supply of last week, but there Is an lncreaae over the corresponding week of last year amounting to about 11,000 head. The most noticeable feature of the trade haa been the scarcity of good stuff. In fact with the exception of a very few loads everything haa been on the part-fat order. Packers do not seem to want that class of stuff and as a result trading has been extremely slow, with the tendency of prices down ward. Well fattened stuff, it is thought. would sell readily at just about last week s nricea. Tha feeder market has also been rather quiet, aa there la very Utile demand for (cedars at tots una oi yea, ih leawai of prices has undoubtedly been downward, the same as on fat stuff. In connemljn with the decline In Scotch Iron through the slackening of the Ameriiv i d.ma.ic!. It caused a pretty heavy s.-lllng of iron fhrjii In Berlin, quotations breaking from 3 10 4 points. The market is less liable 10 with stand attack than any other becau e o existence of large bull engagements. Coal shares suffered last week because he March earnings of the largj compan es dl 1 not realize the expectations of the market General Industrials were generally .owei. Government bonds constituted the strongest teature of ths market Inst week; neverue less German 3s broke 3up on selling 01 pub lic subscriptions to the new lrue. Among foreign government ecurlt4, A g rtnai were the strongest upon tbe Impiovlng bus iness situation. Mexicans acre firmer upon the rise In silver, and Spaniards we e firmer upon, favorable crop reports ad -arts order. Money rates have a higher tenden-v. Short term loans reached 4? per cent ye ter day and the private rate of discount wis 214 per cent. The reason for this Is that cash is being raised for the first payments tomorrow on the new German loan. For eign exchange rates were not uniform. New York dropping 75p during th wstk. th London rate was easier and the Vienni an 1 Paris rates were higher. The Frankfurter Zeltung believes It scarcely probable that the easy money of March will return roo t. The foreign trade of Germany 10.- ihe hrst three months of thla yrar wa: Im port. $376.5oii.rjO. an Increase of HZW 00); exports, 43ol.25o.000. an increase of $3u.2j0.0oj. The export of ruw sugar to the United S:atcs for the three montha waa only 1,721 tons, as against 22.749 tons In the viar 1912 and 42.8x2 tons in 1901. Th? crop report f jr j an 01 oeriiiany, umcu .:in to. eiu.ws en average 01 3.2, the poorest for the nst te 1 years, with the exception of 1901. The con dition last year was 2 2. Rye averages 2 2, aa against 2.2 last year. Crops have suff ered severely owlna to the severe oid of the early winter and tne cold rains of March and April. The Lokal Anzelger says that the Gerrran government has decided upon the impo I tlon of retaliatory duties up in Canadian products equal to the extra dut'es which Canada la enforcing against German goods. This measure Is intended to prevent other British colonies from levying rtlr.crlmlr.a - ing duties against Germany. BRITISH BUDGET AIDS STOCKS Ritchie's Speech Causes Boom, Al- t hough Other Happening's Depress. LONDON. April 23. The effect of the budget on the Stock exchange was Imme diate and Invigorating. The wek. wh.ch opened with but a slight show of fmprote ment. continued Indifferent, everyone wal. ing for Chancellor Ritchie's annou icement This was receiveo witn cnetnnf 011 ine floor of the exchange and an activity un known for a long time Immediately com menced, the whole lift showing fair ai- vancea over Friday's closing. It Is thou ht probable tnat- tne recovery in consols win continue. It Is a fact that without excep tion writers on financial subje is, many of whom have been despondent place the be ginning of the year, predict continued im provement and increasing conndeace. The public announcement of the terms of the Transvaal loan Is now awaited anxiously. This, and the action of the bank on April 30, when a reduction In the rate of discount is' expected, are two influence! upon which much depends. The American rectlon last week responded to the improved tune of wall street. Argentines may be sail to have been tbe feature ejf the last week, tnese securities receiving a large proportion of the attention of Investors. Altogether, the market Is more rheerlul than it hai been for some time past. Little attention Is paid to political troubles In the far tat Dry Goods Market. MANCHESTER, April 2e. The rondlilr of the cloth market were not materially al tered last week. Business waa difficult to negotiate, although the turnover was some what Improved owing to the lact that some sellers weakened and were more reaflv. to meet the terms of buyers. Considerable linos have been booked for Calcutta end Bombay at a little aboae tne prices of De cember. There were numerous offers fron China, but most of tbeia ware rtfuttd, transactions only being possible where ths necessity of sellers were urgent. Shippers to some parts of (toiith America ope ate I more treely last week, but pronpeo e in the Levant are no brighter. Yarns generally were slightly weaker. Many spinners are buey with old ordeis and new orders are scarce. Joseph Live stock Market. BT. JOSEPH. April 25.
