CHICAGO, April a Although the grain
pita were rather quiet today prices con
tinued Arm. May wheat cloning KUc
higher, with July up the same. May torn
was c better and July up v. while Msy
oats were fce higher. Provisions were
easier, the July products cloning from t2
7Ho to imc lower.
There was only a fair volume of buslne'S
In wheat and the market lacked any fea
tures of special Importance. Openir.g
prices on Juiy were firm and a shade to
Wac higher at 724H'72-HiC, under the In
fluence of comparatively steady cables,
the Liverpool market showing only a
slight decline In the face of the revere
break here yesterday. May opened un
changed to Vc lower at 77'Ki77'c, -ana
there was little doing In that month ear y
In the day, traders apparently being afraid
to venture either way on thU delivery.
The market was supported throughout the
day by the leading long, and shorts were
also good buyers, the latter acting under
the belief that a deal Is on In May. Under
these Influences and with higher price at
St. Louis and New York the market
strengthened and the demand gradually en
larged. Bullish foreign advices added to
the strength the latter part of the session,
the German official crop report showing a
condition little better than bad, and May
aold up to 78c, with July tip to 73c. There
was a slight reaction Just before the close
and final figures on May were 4c higher
at 78h?('78ic, and July ,c h gher at
T2',c. Clearances of wheat and flour were
equal to 168,000 bu. Primary receipts were
oi,0tK) bu., against 2O?,0oo bu. a year ago.
Minneapolis and Duluth reported receipts
of 84 cars, which, with local receipts of 35
cars, 6 of contract grade, made total re
ceipts for the three points of 119 cars,
against 138 cars last week and 135 cars a
rear ago.
Corn ruled firm on a light trade and in
ympathy with the strength tn wheat. The
crop news was of the sort calculated to
make the sentiment bullish, the govern
ment report claiming slow progress hav ng
been made In planting throughout the corn
belt. May closed Vkc higher at 44o, after
selling between 44(44Va and 4-tc. while
July was up Vie at 447,c, after ranging be
tween 44ic and 43c. Jocal receipts were
87 cars, 2 of contract grade.
Small receipts and bullish crop advices
caused a good general demand for oats
and the trade was on a large scale, espe
cially for the July delivery. Shorts were
liberal buyers, while commission houses
sold. After selling between 84c and 884c,
May closed o higher at 344c. July closed
Wr higher at ilaic. Local receipts
were 60 cars.
General liquidation by pit traders caufei
weakness In provisions, but trading on the
whole waa not large. The buying of brok
ers on the decline steadied the market.
July pork closed 17Vc lower at I17.42H, July
lard waa off WvUc at 39.72H. and r.bs
were off 68-7Hc at 9.72H99.75.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat,
20 cars; corn, 60 cars; oata, 100 cars; hogs,
25,000 head.

CATTLE Although cattle receipts were
fairly liberal this morning, there were noue
too many to meet the requirements of the
local demand. Packers were all out early
and an active and fully steady market
was experienced from -start to finish.
The market on beef steers opened In good
season, and buyers wry. bidding steady to
strong prices. The hftndy weight cattle
that were well finished ana of good quality
commanded stronger vprlc.es without much
difficulty. The pJatrCjcallle and those that
were only part lot sold In Just about yes
terday's notches, but still trading was ac
tive on all kinds, so that although the big
end of the receipts was made up of steers
an early clearance was made.
The cow market was also active and fully
steady, so far as the better grades were
concerned, tanners and the common kinds
of cutters were rather slow sale, and
brought rather uneven prices, the same as
has been the case for noma time past. Any
kii ui nil desirable, though, changed
hands very freely and the prices paid were
fully as gooa as tnose in iwm jrewiuni.
Bulls veal calves and slags also gold
readily at prices that, showed no quotable

the demand from the country for good

SHEEP There was a light run of sheen
and lambs here this morning, but the qual
ity was very much on the common order.
In fact there was practically nothing of
fered that could be called choice. As a re
sult the market was extremely slow and
the tendency of prices downward. Buyers
for locsl packers said that they were will
ing to buy good stuff at steady prices, but
the part-fat klndn. such as were offered to
day, they were not at all anxious for. It
was late In the day before much business
was transacted, as buyers were all bidding
lower and sellers wanted steady prices.
