TTIE OMAHA DAILY IlEE: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22, 1903. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Wbat Fit Boon 4f Wild Eicltement n Board of Trade. ARMOUR'S LIGHTNING CHANGES PARALYZE Dealers Krli la Vala ( Forecast Leading? BalPs Seat Mot, that Prices Break ana ReeeTer. CHICAGO, April . A sharp break oc curred In May wheat today, tne price de clining ac from the high point on an ef fort on tne part of the Armour people to dispose or a part of the Immediate line, but recovery waa almost as rapid as the break and tne close on Mh y only 4Wc lower, while July closed HHV lower. May corn waa Ho lower, with July unchanged, and May oats were off He. provisions were steady, the Julf products cloning irom a shade lower to a ahade higher. The wheat pit waa a scene of wild ex citement the greater part of the day and pit traders were kept In a constant state of suspension in an effort to anticipate the lightning change of front of the big bull leader. May opened a shade to faisc higher, at 784'a7i4C, and the early tone waa one of firmness on the action of the Armours, who were reported to have taken 211i,0cj0 bu. of No. 1 northern yesterday tor shipment, and on the suspicion that a large pert of the imall slock in store was to be shipped out. There seemed to be little ooubi that the leading long had complete control or the situation and shorts were disposed to cover, which advanced the price of May to 79c and July to lic. But the weather abroad was reported mora fa. vorable. with the Liverpool cable practi cally unchanged a change In sentiment de veloped and buying orders became quite scarce. The stampede began when the operators tor th Armours oegan to sell, and at the first sign of selling on the part of the leader, the entire pit became Hooded with selling orders and the price of May dropped to 754c, while July slumped off In sympathy to ilHc. When the selling was at Its height commission house pit opera tors received more stop-loss orders than thev could execute, the nrlce dropping so suddenly that they were unable to clear themselves until tne price naa aecnneu i or 2 cents below the price at which they had orders to sell. The contusion was so great that at one time the trading was go ing on In May wheat In different parts of the pit at 7o4c and 774c When the leader realized the effects ot his efforts to ds pose of his holdings, an effort was made to support the market, and as a result prices advanced again as rapidly as they had de clined. May advancing to 77c within two minutes after It had touched the low point. The last hour of the session was compara tively quiet and quit a steady feeling pre vailed. After selling up to 78c, May closed Hf3c lower 8t 774c, and July was down Sfrc at 724&724C after rallying to 72c. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 265,700 bu., Bradatreet's world's vlsiUe showing a decrease of 8,900.000 bu. Primary receipts were 870,000 bu.. against 301. COj bu. a year ago. Minneapolis and Duiutn re ported receipts of 88 cars, which, with the local receipts of &6 cars, 2 of contract grade, made total receipts for the three points of 123 cars, against lot cars last week and 236 cars a year ago. corn ruled dull and featureless and, In spite of the weakness In wheat, the market held steady. No pressure to sell was ap parent at any time and the demand was sufficient to absorb all the local offerings. The close was steady, with May He lower at 44c, after selling between 44c and 444c. July closed unchanged at 444c Loral re ceipts were 88 cars cars, with 1 of contract grade. Oats was active, with prices unsettled. Covering by shorts caused a strong tone at the start, but the spring-like weather brought out plenty of selling orders and, with the break In wheat, the selling be came quite general, resulting In lower prices. There was better demand for July late in the day and a large part of the loss was regained. May closed at a loss of He, after selling between S4Hc and 8c. July was off He, at 314c. Local receipts were 1W cars. - There was only a moderate trade In pro visions and after an easy opening the mar ket became firmer on a good demand for ribs from brokers. - Prices, however, showed but slight fluctuations, ana tne close was steady, with July pork a shade lower at (17.80, and lard off a shade at t9.82Hff9.85. while ribs were a shade higher at 19.80. Estimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat, 10 cars; corn, 30 cars; oats, 65 cars; bogs, 27,0110 head. . The leading future ranged as follows: Artlcles.l Open. Hlgh.l Low. Close. Yesy. There wss an up ward movement of prices today, led by the Gould group and Baltimore & Ohio. As other parts of the list came Into the move ment a disposition became manifest to take profits In the early leaders, which led to a moderate reaction all through the list and the closing was easy and dull. The movement was attributed largely to professional operations and commission bouses continued to complain of the light volume of their orders. It was plain, how ever, that a speculative party had been or ganised to advance the market and they made their operations effective today. Their campaign seems based on general condi tions. They had the advantage today of the cheering Influence upon sentiment exercised by the modification of the decree against Northern Securities company so far as It referred to the enjoining of the payment of dividend. The Great Northern dividend came off that stock this morning and the assembling of the Northern Pacific direc tors during the session of the Stock ex change gave assurance that that dividend would also be promptly distributed. Specu lative, operations were especially marked In the Gould group, led by Wabash pre ferred, and especial stress was laid upon the April report of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture confirming the very favora ble government report as to the favorable condition of winter wheat. Southern Pa cific was lifted 2 points late in the day in an unconfirmed rumor that a settlement had been effected between the Harrlman and Keene interests. Some early heaviness in Amalgamated Copper waa accounted for by the Illness of the president of the com pany, but this stock recovered. Colorado Fuel was weak without explanation. Read ing lagged In the advance on account of the opening or the Interstate commerce hearing of charges of suppression of competition by the coal combine, but this stock also be came strong. An unusually large number of Industrial stocks were advanced from 1 to 2 points and beyond that for American steel foundry, which gained 8, Sloss Shef field steel 4, Westlnghouse electric 6 and the first preferred 8. The professional contingent among the traders laid some stress upon tomorrow's entry into the new exchange quarters as proper sentimental ground for advancing prices. During the last hour the trading was considerably neglected, on account of diversions Indulged In by the brokers as an Incident to the closing of business In their temporary quarters on the Produce ex change floor. An Incident of the day was the resumption of the recording of transac tions in odd lots on the tape. During the boom period of two years ago In the midst of which the- Stock exchange moved to the temporary quarters now being abandoned. It was found Impracticable to keep up with the record of the minor transactions, and since that time only full share lots of 100 shares, or some multiple of that, have been printed on the tape until today. The re sumption of odd share lots must be re garded as a symptom of the relative dull ness to which business In the stock market haa rallen. Money continued to work easier, with every prospect of additional relaxation, and the recent upward course or exchange was also recorded today. Prices of bonds moved upward In sym pathy with stocks and on a ralrly well dis tributed demand. Total sales, par value, $3,110,000. United States bonds were all unchanged on the call. Chi. cnt'o was quoted slow and weak, but prices held up here until the last end, when Duy ers were not as anxious for supplies, so that the close of the market was less active and prices weakened a little. The quality of the olterlncs was considerably better than yesterday, which helped out the ap pearance of the market on paper to quite an extent. The bulk of the nogs again sold from $7.07H to $7.12H, while the prime heavies went from $7.15 to $7.20. The light stuff sold from $7.06 down. The bulk or the arrivals was soon disposed of, but owing to (he weak close It was rather late be fore a clearance was made. Representative saiea; No Av. Sh. Pr. No. Av. Sh.
