Opening prloea were easier on the poor showing of the IJverpool cables, which failed to respond to the advance here Saturday, and July was off Mitic at 7iH'a7zvc, while May was a shade higher to WnSc lower at TlWiVbc Considerable liquidation occurred the first half hour but buying by the prominent long soon started prices upward. The May delivery waa extremely nervous and trad ing In that option was light, owing to the feeling of uncertainty surrounding the sit uation. A decrease of 8,123.0(10 bushels In the visible supply, together with a fair ex- fiort demand, were bullish Influences, the atter half of the session. After selling vp to 7K'c May closed c higher at UWt 1nc, while July closed at an advance of He at 7iTc. after selling to '2lU3c. Clear ances of wheat and Hour were equal to 4i0,000 bushels. Market Wnlta on Conrt's Securities Decialon, Casting Heavy Buying. NEW YORK. April 20 There was much hesitation and Irregularity In today's stock market. This tendency was attributed In the early part or the session t" the dread that the United States circuit court at St. Paul would refuse the petition of the Northern Securities company to modify the decree against the company, pending the appeal, so as to allow the payment of divi dends by the Northern Pacific and Great Northern companies to their stockholders. The general expectation In Wall street was that the petition would be refused, and the unexpected decision In favor of the modifi cation caused a precipitate buying move ment, in which tne short Kellers ot tne forenoon were conspicuous. This advance met opposition before it had proceeded far and prices were carried backwards again, after which the market hung practically stagnant for a time. The professionals bid up prices again at the last to the top level and the market closed steady, with a showing of net gains teaching a point or over for a number of the conspicuous lead ers. As the Northern Securities company Is the principal stockholder of both the Oreat Northern and the Northern Pacific, nd as the chief lunctlon or the securities company as a holding company la to re ceive dividends from the constituent com panies and distribute them to Its own stock holders, today's modification of the decree of the court leaves tne muation ot tne company practically unaffected until the supreme court Bhall have decided finally the questions at issue, in tne tear mat the petition would be denied. Northern Se curities on the curb sold down to 94 this morning, which is only a traction above the lowest prices in the slump of last Mon day. On the rebound the stock touched 9SH4. Its reaction or over a point was a dominant. Influence on the reaction tn the Stock exchange. It recovered and closed at 99, with continuing effect on the general market. The early stock market fluctuated uncer tainly be. ween the contending influences of the strength In the Oould group and the weakness or Keaaing. ine seeming agree ment of both sides to the Manhattan labor controversy that a settlement was assured, and the published rumors that a compro mise had been effected of the differences between the Pennsylvania and Wabash in terests, were Jointly responsible for the strength In the Oould group. In which Man hattan was the leader with a riae of 24. The depressing factor agalnat Reading wus the invent Nation by the Interstate Com merce commission, to open tomorrow, of the coal combination, wnicn is expected to furnish material which may be available for use In proceedings under the anti-trust law. The lockout reported at the Reading collieries, owing to a dispute over the Sat urday hours for work, helped to depress Reading and some of the other coalers, and th Pennsylvania group lost ground In sym pathy. In the lste recovery Union Pacific, St. Paul, New York Central. Baltimore Sc Ohio and the Gould group were conspicu ous. The growing ease of money waa an encouraging factor for the bulls. Possibly advance knowledge of additional trust com pany concessions from the clearing house privileges may have been a factor In the hesitating tone ot the market, although no announcement was made on the subject until after the close of the market. The hnnd market waa quiet, but quite steady. Last week's dealings In bonds reached an aggrrgme 111 me pr vaiue ui 315 445.500, which la a decrease of no less than 4 per cent, compared with the cor responding period of last year. NEW YORK, April 20. COTTON The market opened steady at unchanged prices to a decline of 4 points under heavy de mands for the day's receipts and continued liquiaation, out alter tne decline bad ex tended another point or two on the active options the market was rallied by covering, which resulted In the advance of values to a level, about I points lower to 2 points higher as compared with Saturday night's finals. This proved to be the best price of the day however, and waa followed by further liquidation and selling for the short account, as a result of the favorable weather noted throughout the south and indications that tomorrow's port receipts would again exceed those for the same day last year, while the volume of exports showed a decreasing tendency. The decline was assisted by the weakness In Liver pool, which at one time wss 4fg5 points lower and closed ISifaihk points higher. There was little support In the market and prices were forced down to a level. 8&15 points below the closing quotations of Sat urday, with the new crop months showing the greatest relative firmness. The In sight for tho week Is being estimated at 115,0110 bales, against :,000 bales last year. At the low point ot the session, however, there was consldershle profit-taking by shorts and the demand from this source brought about a final rally, which carried prices upward a matter of about 3ft 6 points and the market was finally steady, net 10 points lower to '! points higher. Beef steer buyers started out early and took hold of the better grades In good shape. The general market could safely be quoted steady to strong and fairly active, 'the strength and activity, though, were confined largely to the better trades, as the part fat cattle were none too brl.sk and were no more than ateady. The qual ity of the offerings today was hardly up to the usual standard, owing to the mod erate offerings, though, the bulk of tha arrivals waa disposed ot In good season. The cbw market showed very little change from the close of last week. There did not seem to be any too many to meet the re quirements of the local demand, and prac tically everything was disposed of a.t an early hour and prices showed no quotable change. Bulls, veal calves and stags met with ready sale at last week a closing prices. The supply of etockers and feeders In the yards this morning was rather limited, and as speculators carried over very few from lost week they were all anxious for fresh supplies. Anything at all desirable was soon disposed of at steady to strong prices, but the commoner grades were neglected, the same as they have been all along. Quite a good many warmed-up cornfeds again sold for feeders. Representative sales: BEEF hTEERa No. At. Chicago, though, had liberal receipts snd prices broke at thst point, which, of course, gave buyers a chsnce to pound the market here alno. At the start a few of the better grades Sold at right close to steady price, but the general market was nearly a nickel lower. Trading waa not active at any time, but there were so few on sale that the market soon rame to a close. The bulk of the hogs sold around 37.10, or from 87.07V4 to 37.12W. The good heavy weights sol id mostly from 37.1-14 to 37.15. The quality of the offerings today wss not particularly good, as Is tisuslly the esse on a Monday. Representative sales: No. Aa. sa. The commoner kinds, though, were slow and draggy with the tendency ot prices downward. The better grades were rather scarce, but some Colorado wooled lambs sold for 86.75, and some Colorado wooled yearlings brought 35.50. Wooled wethers brought 85.25, and wooled ewes 34.50. The demand for feeders waa rather lim ited this morning, and while good stuff held steady, common kinds were slow and weak.
