CHICAGO. April 17. WHEAT The mar

holding firm, although there has been no
evidence of Armour support, and there has
been a good deal of covering. The May
kept steady and July and September ad
vanced fcitrVic. The feature has been the
relative strength of the outside markets,
all advancing more than Chicago. The re
port this morning that all the flour mills
at Minneapolis were closed on account .of
the lute discrimination was against the
price, yet the northwest markets were
higher. Fnglish cables were, higher, Paris
wis lower. Argentine . shipments were

CORN The corn market has been Arm.

OATS There has been a strong oat mar.
ket, up Vmilc, with the May up the most;
cosh oats lire Hfilc higher, with standard
on track selling as high as 87c. The recent
cash sales of standard have reduced the
standard stock below 200.000 bu., and shorts
were anxious to cover; 86,000 bu. standard
were cancelled for shipment this morning;
local receipts only 88 cars, with 8 contract:
estimates for tomorrow, 95 cars; New Yolk
reports lOO.OiiO bu. taken for export; local
sales. 100.000 bu.
PROVISIONS Market was strong at the
opening, with little better support. There
were July ribs for sale around 9.70. Flnley
Barrell were sellers of September ribs;
Harris-Gate of May. Trade was mostly
local and dull. There were 16.000 hogs; mar.
nei active ana urn; prices oc nigher than
resiliency and the final recovery, when the
Uecllne was checked in Metropolian Street
Railway, was rather violent In some cases.
The reaction had practically wiped out the
advances, but some conspicuous stocks
rallied almost to the top level In the last
few minutes of the trading and the closing
was strong in an irregu.ur way. The day s
movement of prices was largely profes
sional, but was evidently backed by big
resources. This was c.early seen by- the
aggressive way in which prices were bid
up at tbe last against the shorts after their
raid on the market.
The advance in the market was pursued
with some manifest caution and with at
tentive consideration of symptoms of a re
newal of realizing sales. The progreesive
steps of the advance, however, failed to
develop any signr of renewed liquidation.
On the other hand there was no indication
that there was any new outside interest
attracved to the market by the advance In
prices.. Belated, covering of some large
accounts waa in evidence and waa an im
portant factor in the strength of some
stocks. The advances in the market seemed
to have come to a pauee before the audden
drop in Metropo.ltan Street Railway and
prices gave way quite readily In sympathy
with that movement. There had been evi
dence all day ot a long supply of this stock
In the market and the bears piati.teu u.c.r
fierce raid with the nurnose of uncovertnie
j atop loss orders and dislodging long stock.
Ilia price ren rapmty 0 points, out ine
subsequent rally, wiped out 2H points of this
loss. Metropolitan Securities fell an ex
treme bhi and rallied 4 points. The loss In
Third Avenue extended to 6s, on compara
tively light dealings and there was no
transaction in the stock after the market
rallied. Manhattan continued firm and
turned strong, rising 294 over las', night at
one lime. In spite of ine vote of the em
ployes in favor of a strike. The hope Is
evidently entertained that a strike will be
averted.
Some of the standard railroad stocks were
comparatively late coming Into the day's
movement and there waa an unusually large
number of Industrials embraced In the ad
vance. Colorado Fuel and General Electric
made gains of Peoples uas aavancea
2l4 just at the last and the list of 1 to 2
point gains among the industrials is a lung
one. General considerations apparently
ruled the speculation, such as the technical
strength of a position following so pro
longed a downward course of prices with
the resultant relief of the money market
by liquidation, good railroad earnings, ex
ceptionally encouraging crop returns and
reports of large current export business In
the grain markets. The figures of the
week's grain exports were, however, some
what disappointing, showing an increase
over last week of wheat of 344,492 bu., but
a decrease in corn exports of nearly 1.000,000
bu. '
Sub-treasury operations indicate a gain
by the banks on that account of tl.633,000
and It is estimated that this figure will bs
expanded by about tl, 000.000 from other
sources. In view of the, stock market
liquidation a considerable loan reduction Is
confidently expected in tomorrow's bank
Bonds were firm and but slightly affected
bv the late flurry in stocks. Total sales,
par value, t2,6oo.U'0. 1'nlted States new 4s
advanced Vi on the last call.

Cai ilK-There was a very large run of
cattlu here this morning for a Friday, so
tnut the supply lor the week Is much
heav.e.- than for last week or for the same
wetk of i-ast year. Owing to tho liberal
receipts packers were very bearish and the
market was slow from start to finish, with
tne tendeuev of prices downward.
Beef buyers old not talce hoid with much
life this n.ornlng and In tact It did not seem
to make much difference to them whether
they got any cattle or not. There have
been so many steers on the market this
week that packers are pretty well filled up
and consequently they did not have to
rustle for supplies today. Their bids were
generally a dime lower than yesterday, al
though some ot the kinds that suited buy
ers the best were not a great deal lower
than yeatcrday. The msrket was very slow
from start to finish and It was late before
a clearance was made.
The cow market was also rather slow and
weak. The very, best handy weight cows
and 'heifers did .not suffer to any great ex
tent, but others were slow and b'4l-c lower.
Sellers did not like the idea of taking off
again today, so they held on for some time
and the. day was well advanced before a
clearance was made.
Hrtlls were slow and a ihr.de lower today
as a result of the weaker feeling on steers
and cows. e.Val calves, though, did no
t,how, much chansc. . .
There were comparatively few Mockers
find feeders in the yards this morning and
not many were wanted, as the end of the
week, is too near at hand for much to he
doiu(f I" the feeder divls-lon. Anything
btrlctly choice did not show much change,
but the general market was slow and weak.

HOGS TheM was a more moderate Sup
ply of hogs In sight this morning and under
the Influence of a good demand the market
improved a little. The bulk of the hogs
soid a big nickel higher than yesterday or
a good many were calling It 5&'10c higher.
The bJlk of the hogs sold from 17.10 to 17.15,
with the prime heavies going from t7.16 to
17.30. There were comparatively few light
hogs on sale this morning, but those that
did arrive sold from 17. lo down. Owing to
the scarcity of the light hog the range of
trices today was narrower than It has been
for some time past. Trading waa fairly
active, so that the bulk of the hogs waa
"on disposed of. but on the close the feel
ing was, If anything, a Uttla weaker. Rep
resentative sales:

CALIFORNIA DRIED FRUITS There is
slight Improvement in the demand for
spot prunes and some Jobbing bti8lnV8S ha
been reported. The market continues easy,
however, at prices ranging from tc to 6V
for all grades. Prices show considerable
firmness without special activity, w tn
choice quoted at 7'jS"I4c and fancy at 9,ii
104c. Peaches are dull and without change
at 746c for choice and 6439c for fancy.
SHEEP There was not a very large run
of sheep and lambs here this morning but
the market was ratber slow and weak, as
the demand waa not very brisk, and be
sides that, the reports from other points
have been unfavorable to the selling Inter
ests all the week. The break In prices
this week has been the most disastrous
and far reaching of the seaaon, as all kinds
have been affected, the good kinds as well
as the common stuff. There was very
little good stuff here today with which to
make a test of the market, but some lambs
of fairly good quality sold at $676. The
situation could best be described by calling
the market slow and weak.
There were not very many feeders on
sale today, but It is safe to say that the
price of feeders has been follqwlng the
downward course of fat stuff.
