meet to protest against a custom which for
several years has spoiled the season for
many sensitive persons. At this time
several confectionery stores have been
wont to offer as a premium with a certain
amount of purchase a little live chicken in
a pasteboard cage; and the window display
of the pretty little creaturea running about
with baby unconsciousness of the fate in
store for them has been an Easter feature,
attractive to the unthinking, but most
aorrowtul to those who feel for the least
of these.
Easter has many symbols, the most fa
miliar being the Eaater egg, which typ
ifies in the simplest way the resurrection
and the eternal renewal of life. It is
strange how a beautiful thought may de
generate. By aa unexpected evolution ot
ldeaa a chicken haa come to atand also as
a popular Easter token. Now a little
chicken Is one of the prettiest, daintiest,
most appealing of baby creatures. But
what Easter sentiment can be conveyed by
the gift of one of theae unhappy and ill
destined little lle fowls is haru to de
termine. We wish at this season to think
of life, of hope. How can ws, speculating
on the near fate of these little unfor
tunatea, remember either? We wish to
make the world happy at this time. What
happiness Is in store for these poor chicks,
artificially reared, to be Indiscriminately

Undoubtedly most of these gifts are in
tended for children. We wish to teach them
the Easter lesson; we wish to make them
happy. But If they love animals, aa most

Children feel these things keenly, when
they feel at all.
