Heavy Rales Caose Strong; Rally, Which, However, Doea Not Last. NEW YORK, April 8 There was an other heavy selling movement this morn ing, which apparently over-reached the mark, Judging from the scramble by the shorts to cover during the last hour, when the supply of stocks became scarce. This led to a lively rally and a general recovery of prices to above last night's level. The rally was not well held, however, owing -to the evidence of renewed realizing and the satisfaction of the more urgent demand from the shorts. As a result the close was easy and below the top level. The appre ciable relaxation of the tension In the money market and a confidence that the factors at work would bring still further relief next week were the dominant in fluences In the rally. The morning selling was primarily due to the violent break In Southern Pacific to 5o'., which aroused fears for the position of the pool. The ap- farently endless stream of liquidation In 'ennsylvanla wae also turned into the market afresh, carrying the price to a new low level at 135. The Friday requirements in the money market kept up the call money rate esrly In the day and there were appearances to warrant the assump tion that the banks were assuming an ad monitory attitude toward the speculative pools In a way which might account for some of the selling. The fact that Southern Pacific bioks closed tonight tor the annual meeting Indi cates the end of the struggle for represen tation at that meeting. The demand for the stock Is likely to be affected as a con sequence. Its movement became feverish In the late dealings during tne rally and In lis rise to 604 there were several wide price changes. A rumor found currency at the same time that a prominent financier had been Induced to adjust the difference anions' the Southern Puclllc shareholders. The notable feature In the late strength was Brooklyn Transit, which was lifted 2-S over last night. The movement was attrlb-. uted to the prospect of the usual summer Increase In trafllc. In the early decline Amalgamated Copper weakened on the slump in the London copper market and a further offering down of the metal on the local Metal exchange. United States real ties suffered from strike talk. Tennessej Coal was sold on the reduction In price of pig Iron by southern furnaces. Colored Fuel extended lis decline. Tne weaknes of Sugar was attributed to unsettled trade conditions. The preliminary estimates 01 the week's currency movement Indicates a small gain on balance from the Interior, but the loss to the subtreasury of $1.567,ioi and a shipment of $250,000 In gold to Canada promise to bring the net spntnse In cash to over $l,500,0"o. The confidence that the usual seasonable factors are at work for the development of the local money market, however, overshadows the Influence ot the probable Immediate showing by the banks. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par value, $2,670,000. United States bonds were all unchanged on the last call. The following are the quotations on ths New York Stock exchange Atchison do p(d Bal. There were comparatively few beef steers In the yards this morning, and buyers started out early and bid strong prices tor the desirable grades. In a good many Instances sale were made that looked 6ff!loc hlKher than the tame kinds brought yes terday. The light and handy weight cattle I that were In good condition showed the j most Improvement. There were quite a few 1 cattle here this morning that were of good quality, as will be seen from the sales below. The- cow market was also active and etronger and the better grades could be quoted 6SiHc higher. The good harldy weight heifers and also handy weight cows that were good and lat were picked up In a hurry. All kinds of cows and heifers, though, with the exception of canners. sold to better advantage than they did yester day. There were very few canners on sale, though, and from the way buyers acted they did not care for many. Dulls, veal calves and stags all sold at fully as good prices as were paid yester day. There were very few Mockers and feeders in the yards this morning, and as the end of the week Is at hand the demand was moderate. Anything strictly choice would probably have sold readily at steady prices, but the common and fair to good kinds were rather neglected, and, If anything, sold a shade lower. Lamhs were In good demand and as high as $7.50 was paid for western lambs, which Is not only the top price of the season, but also the highest price ever paid here for that class of lambs. Somo clipped sheep and yearlings brought $6.00 and some wooled wethers sold at the same price. The demand today seemed to be fully equal to the supply, and everything sold early. As compared with the close of last week lambs are about steady, with good stuff In demand. Good ewes are also not much different, but wethers and yearlings have been selling rather unevenly, and the part fat kinds. In particular, are a little lower. The decline In most cases would be covered by HK&lSc, and in extreme cases by 151626c. There were not enough feeders here today to make a test of the market.
