A Dig export buelness, together with bullish European advices repotting drouth In aouth Russia and Koumanla anJ the decreased slocks In the northwest were tha causes tor the better demand. The re port that the Argentine sulpment for thi week would be smaller was also a strength- enlng Influence. Minneapolis and Duluth reported receipts of 221 cars, which with local receipts of 24 crs. none of contract grade, made total receipts for the three points of 245 care, against 266 cars laM week and 224 cars a year ago. Dullness prevailed In corn and the gen aral sentiment was bearish, although the atrength of Y-heat held r"'es firm. Trad ing was largely local, with considerable changing going on selling May and buy ing July. The cash market was dull on account of the tie-up of the luke fleet. After ranging between 43c and 43V May closed 4e higher at 43Vc. Local receipts were amall at 128 care, with 1 of contract grade. There waa only a small trade In oats, but the market was firm In sympathy with the strength In wheat. The principal buying waa by a leaning dealer. Closing quotations: Conaola for money. .94 7-14 NEW YORK. April 2. The stock market today continued almoe-t wholly In profes sional hands and there was a further dwindling of operations. The tone of the market was heavy to weak throughout. The motives which prompt the professional operators are aimcuit to discern, un lues day they bought stocks with money at 15 per cent in tne connaence mat me can money market was about to relax. Yes terday they sold stocks again, although there was a distinct relaxation In the call money rate, with a promise of a further growth of ease. Some other considerations apparently nad intervened which caused a question whether the easier money market was destined to benefit the stock market. The Southern Pacific quarrel weighed on tne market. 1 ne developments in this con troversy showed nothing to affect directly the value of the securities concerned, but tne bitterness of feeling shown by the con tending parties and the boldness of t lelr habitual methods In stock market opera tions kept alive a fear that a speculative duel might be precipitated in the market It self, witn probably disastrous consequences to many innocent onlookers. Another dis turbing factor was the renewal of liquida tion In Pennsylvania, carrying It back to last week's low level. The selling received a renewed Impetus from the February statement of net earnings, which showed the expenses Increased more than twice aa much as the Increase In gross earnings, with a corresponding cut In .the net re turns. The net earnings for two months are Inrreased over $1,000,000 less than for the same two months last year. Taken In connection with the February Union Pa cific statement published on Tuesday show ing a decrease in net earnings or 4413.4,4. there Is a disposition to surmise that the recent liquidation in that stock may have been from other than professional bear sources. The mildness of tne demand for stocks for short account and the little help given to any rally In the market from h9 demand to cover emphasizes this Impres sion. The question of the action to be taken. by the Wabash employes roiiowlng the dis solution of the strike Injunction, ts awaited with some concern, as was Indicated by the heaviness of the Wabash stocks today. The decline In Western Union had no other explanation than the progress reported to be making toward a commercial basis by the wireless systems. A sharp break In the local copper market affected Amalga mated Copper. The attack on Coloradi Fuel was professedly based on the pro posed bond Issue. Earge customs pay ments, dei-osits to retire circulation and some large miscellaneous collections re sulted In an absorption by the aubtreasury yesterday or ti.Z44.uuo in spite or the gov ernment Interest payable. This proved a disappointment. The statements of the great foreign banks for the week reflected the enormous requirements ror tne April settlement. A reflux of funds to the mar ket, however. Is now In order In both for eign money markets and here, so that the Immense money situation is of declining Importance Honds were wean, 'total sales, par value. tl.900.tiOO. The foreign markets were generally lower and while the day's movement waa not quite up to the recent average estimate for Brazilian, recelnts for April were large and the market turned slightly easier with shorts taking profits, ths best buyers. The cli.be was steady at unchanged prl.-es to a decline of 5 points. Sales were 44.750 bags. Beef steers again made up the bulk of the offerings and the handy weights con tinued lnvthe best demand and they could safely be quoted strong and active. Buy er all seemed to be anxious for that class of cattle, and as there were a limited num ber on sale the market ruled active and a good many sales looked a little higher. The heavy cattle, however, were in liberal supply, and the prices paid were certainly no more than steady with yesterday, and some salesmen complained that they were unable to get quite as much as they did yesterday. , . The demand for cows and heifers was brisk and the prices paid looked a little stronger. The demand, however, was con fined largely to the better grades a canners were slow sale and prices were no better than they have been for some time past. There are but very few canners coming, and that Is largely the reason that they are so hard to sell at satisfactory prices. If there were enough to make It an object for packers to buy them the market would probably be in better shape. Bulls veal calves and stags all sold In about the same notches they did yesterday. Stockers and feeders were hardly a ready seller tut they were earlier In the week. The very Deal graues we imiu.u.j kwui steady but when It came to the commoner kinds the market was slow and. If any thing a little lower. The demand from the country the last day or two has hardly been up to expectations, which accounts for the weaker feeling. Representative sales: BEEF STEERS. There was not much change from yesterday's extreme close, but the late arrivals yesterday did not meet with as good a demand as those that arrived earlier In the day. The weak ness seems to be confined largely to the part-fed stuff and some sales of that class of stuff were made that looked a big dime lower than the same kinds sold for at the best time yesterday. Receipts have been pretty liberal at all points so far this week which probably accounts In a Iarg. measure for the rather Indifferent tone tu the trade today. There were a few feeders on sale IN morning, but they brought Just about gtsaaaty prlcts.
