the heavy liquidation In corn being the

Trading in corn waa extremely heavy,
and longs took advantage of an opportunity
to dlNiiose of heavv lines, which resulted
In a break In the price, but a good demand
from commission houses prevented any
serious decline. The prospects of cold
weather throughout the corn belt, which
would be favorable for the movement and
the grading, was the chief factor In bring

caxh demand was not as urgent as of late.

CORN There haa been a good deal of
profit-taking in corn today, and some alight

sold, especially the English packers. There
waa very large commission selling by Mc
Reynolds and Bartlett 4k Fraxler. There
waa liberal buying by Harris & Gates, and
bv Couneelman. Cables were un sllahtlv

has not been easy to deride where the corn

houses early. Clearances, 433,000 buahels.
Incomplete because of wire trouble. Re

NEW TORE. Feb. 28 Stocks were sold
with great freedom during the first houra
of today's short session and were rebought
with eagerness after the appearance of the
bank statement. The uncovered bear Inter
est was plainly a factor In the buying and
neir errorta to get stocks were ieit even
luring the selllna of the first hour. Com
mission houses also reported some buying,
tlracted by the considerable decline or tna
week. New York Central suffered a drive,
prompted by the reports of the extensive
landslides along Its trncks. Pennsylvania,
on the other hand, offered good resistance.
Traders are Inclined to shift holdings from
New York Central to Pennsylvania at tne
ame price on the higher dividend report,
'vnnsvlvanla helped the stock and the
ruraors of possible control of Wabash con-
lnue to nave some speculative innuence.
The traders followed the St. Paul move
ment both downward and upward In the
belief that they were In strong financial
company. Amalgamated aisit resisted me
decline and made a good rally. The de

hemselves of from l7,oi.0'W to over .'.-

the late movement of some large cash con-

effect over to next week's statement. The

greatest surprise of the statement and finds
no plausible explanation. The subtreasury
had a credit balance of over 9.W.C10 at the

CATTLE Aa Is generslly the oase on a
Saturday, there were not enough cattle In
ne yarns 10 mane a mantel, f or tne
week, however, receipts have been very-
heavy, as will be seen from the table above,
and for the month of February the supply
has been tne largest on record ror the
second month of the year. The gain over
the same montn of last year amounts to
about 14,000 head. For the year to date
the lncreuae over the same period of laat
year amounts to over 7.0oo head.
'ine Peer steer market has been in very
satisfactory condition all this week. The
tlret half prices Armed up a little, but
toward the close buyers shaved off about
all of the advance, so that the week-closed
with prices In the same notches they were
at the close of last week. The greatest
demand has been for the medium and handy
weight cattle. Heavy weights nave been
rather slow sale as a rule, though a little
bunch of strictly prime cattle that had
been on reeu ror a year sou ror 40.00 ana
weighed 1,194 pounds. The bulk of tho
cattle now coming forward sell from 34.00
to 34 50, while good to choice sell from
14.50 to 15.00 end fancy grades .can be
quoted up to 35.50.
1 ne cow marxei nas Deen ratner uneven
this week. The best grades have sold
freely all the week and are perhaps IW1I60
higher than the close of lat week. Ry that
is meant aucn uinus as sen from 43.40 to
1400. The cutters and fair to good kinds
of beef cows, such as sell from 32.85 to
13.30, have sold unevenly and may be quote!
all the way from nearly steady to ijc or 2oc
lower, canners nave also sunereo fully
that much and toward the close of the
week were hard to sell at any price, as
some of the packers were not buying them
at all and others only In limited numbers.
canners are Belling largely from 32.5o down.
The bull market has shown some little im
provement this week and the better grades
are litoMc higher. A choice bull will now
bring 13.75, or even a little more than that,
but the bulk of them sell from 33.25 to 13.50.
Bologna grades are also a little stronger
for the week. Veal calves have held Just
about steady, rholce grades selling largely
from 16.00 to 16.25.
The stocker and feeder market has been
active and etro.ig all the week on desirable.
? trades. As compared with the close of
ast week. It Is safe to quote the market
16ij20c higher. The commoner kinds have
not shown much Improvement. Fair to
ood cattle are selling irom I3.50 to 13 80
and good to choice from 13 85 to 34.50. The
common stuff sells from 13.40 down. Rep

HOGS There was a light run of hogs
here today and the prices paid were iten-
erally a shade better than yesterday, sales
belli- mane an tne way irom sieauy 10 ac
higher. It was rather an up and down
market, however, being high In the middle
and low at both ends. Packers did not take
hold very freely, as they did not want the
hoKS had enougn to pay tne prices asxea.
Trading as a result was slow from
start to finish, as the end of the
market was very slow and weak
The bulk of the medium weight hogs sold
from to to 16.90 and the aood welKht
hogs from 16 90 to 36.95, whUe prime heavies
sold ss man as si.uo. ine uant stun in
particular was hard to dispose 01 ana sola
from I6S5 down.
For the week the receipts or nogs nave
only been fair, as there is a decrease both
as compared with last week and with the
same week or last year, ror the montn
there has also been a decrease as com
pared with the Same month of February.
For the year to date there Is a decrease of
aoout 73.0UO neaa.
The market for the week has fljetuated
back and forth to some extent, but the
general tendency has been downward. As
compared with the cloae of last week the
market Is 5yl0c lower. Representative

SHEEP There hss been a liberal run of
sheep here all this week, as will be seen
from the table given above. For the morth
receipts have been the heaviest on record
and for the year to date there Is an In
crease over the same period of last year
amounting to over M.om head.
The demand has been in good shape dur
ing the week under review, but till pack
ers wanted to buy their supplies a little
lower. Strictly choice grades of sheep were
probably not over meak to a dime lower,
