Wheat waa strong rarly on higher rubles and on the atrength In corn, but the Ad vance wa not maintained, liberal offerings from the local crowd causing a ahiirp reac tion during the latter pnrt of the day. Trading wa rather dull and the volume of business In the aggregate was not large, although there waa a good demand tor northwest account. May opened H'SisC higher at 7Tfr784c and under a fair demand from commission houses there was an ad vance to 7H4'&7l4c, hut lutor on reports of expectation of larger receipts In the Vnlted Kingdom after next week the price broke to 77'c and the close was near the bottom, 4iic lower at 771'(J771tc. Corn waa strong, Influenced largely by the higher Liverpool rabies, which were up K'Wtc. There waa good general commis sion house buying, the demand being to a large extent Irom shorts. The amount of buflness, however, wiia not large, owing to a ecarclty of offerings, eapeelally In May. although In the July delivery there waa a moderate selling pressure. Small receipt were also a bull factor. Selling on the weakness In wheat caused an eaaler feeing late In the day and the close waa about steady, wltn May 4c lower at 45e, after selling between 45-c and 46iC Local re ceipts were 483 cars, with only 1 of con tract grade. Oats were Irregular and unsettled and the volume of buslnee waa small. The arly market was strong. In sympathy with other grains, but selling by commission houses and realizing by the principal long caused a decline, and the decline wan weak, with May c lower at 354'i;r354c. after ranging between 36 He and 364c Local re ceipt were 2'.2 cars. Provisions were dull and unsettled, open ing easier on a liberal run of hogs and on lower price at the yards, but rallying earlier on a good demand from packera, with a ecarclty of offering, and declining again on selling by commission house. The close wa about steady, with pork rather weak and 124c lower at $17.55. May lard closed a shade higher at 39.574tfj9.60. but ribs were So down at 39.624. '1 ne inn lence oi tne weait bunk statement on bnUr.iay ami cl the developments tit today In money proved more than siifllclent to overconu- uny synyiathetic effect trotn these niiiinti statlor'. of strength. Rut In the afternuon, tshi n it was announced that the senate had taken up the consideration of the AUiricn linai.clai bill, a substantial recovery tet In and a large proportion oi the early losses was recovereu. The whole movement was largely prniesslonal, but ll was hut a tair demonstration of the im portance attached In the financial com infinity to everything that promises relief from the threateneu ilnancial stringency of the coming fall. In this connection any arsurancc, such as provided by the Ai drlch bill, against withdrawals from the nit.ney market by the government in the collection of surplus revenue is considered of prime Importance. The Saturday bank statement,- Bince which there waa no ses sion of the Stock exchange until today, was regarded us rather formidable evidence of the rapid inroads being made upon bank ing resources by large corporation requlre menta. The very Urge decrease In cash gives rise to the supposition that the local trust companies are also beginning to an ticipate their needs In the enlargement of cash reserve to conform with clearing house requirements. Much significance waa attached to the developmenta today of quite an acute pressure for funds from Chicago. The transler of $iO0,00o to that center through the subtreasury Is known to have been largely supplemented with direct shipments by express. It Is believed that large payments coming due on March 1 on real estate operations in weatern towns are responsible for this unexpected de mand, 'ihe extent of commitments In west ern land speculation has been a subject of puzzled conjecture In New York for many months. Large venture were known to have been made In preliminary payments, with the Idea that future payments would be provided for by a resale ot property, but that market lost Its activity, a it has in so many other lines. The extent of the requirements for these supplementary pay ments for real estate becomes of greater Interest by reason of this demand for funds. The local money market hardened on account of these developments and caused a. reaction in sterling exchange away from the gold export point. The ex change market was not affected by heavy sales here of stocks for London account, the light seaboard Rra In clearances or by the decline In the txport demand for cot ton. It was evident that exchange was af fected) rather by a cessation of the demand for remittance to (repay to foreigners ma turing loans owing to firmer money. The movements In 8t. ilxnils &. San Francisco and In Wabash preferred were shrouded In mystery, but speculators supposed the two movements were connected. The stock market hypotheslsi was that a newly se cured control of 8tJ Louis & San Francisco carried a threat vt complication to the Oca Id southwestern system and that the Pennsylvania, rallnoad was availing Itself of this to press for1 substantial jTroperty holdings in the Wabash system on account of the latter's trunk line aspirations. The sirengm oi Amalgamated was attributed to the further rise, in the metal and sugar rises seemed to bo connected with an ad vance in the price of coffee. The market closed - quite active and firm. There was some breadth to the bond market, but the largest activity was In St. Louis A San Francisco funding 4s and Wabash deben ture Bs. Trading wac not exactly brisk, but still the bulk of tha offerings was disposed of in fairly good season. The steer market could be quoted' about steady. The market waa a little slow In opening and salesman In some cases had a hard time to get what they considered steady prices, but as a rule there was prac tically no change from yebterday In the prices paid. The quality was Just about the same as it has been for some time past, which means that there were no finished cattle on sale. The cow market was active and steady. In some cases sales were made that looked a little stronger, but the balk of the offer ings sold In yesterday's notches. Tho greatest demand was for cutters and the better grades of cornfeds. Canners con tinued to be more or lesa neglected and certainly brought no more than they did yesterday. Although a large proportion of the receipts consisted of cows a good clear ance waa made. Bulls, veal calves and stags all sold in in st about the same notches they did on londay. There was quite a demand this morning for anything at all decent In the way of stockers and feeders. Quite a few buyers were in from the country, so that specu lators took hold with considerable life .and paid fully steady prices for practically everything offered. The better the quality the eaaier they were to sell. NEW YORK, Feb 24. COTTON Opened easy at a decline of 64f6 points. The con trolling influence during the early session waa disappointing English cables. There waa considerable selling by the room ele ment, and a general absence of support on tne pan 01 tne duii clique. 1 ne only fea ture of the trade was selling of summer months by the south and a llilln huvlna- nf July for European accjunt. In a general way tne market was very feverish, re muinlns bo throughout the day and sug gesting a feur on the part of the lc.cal traders that an important change of sum character was near at hand. Short sel ing was restricted somewfr.it by the late rall'.ei at Liverpool, but room sentiment was un mistakably mixed. Near months show a steadiness, principally on covering by be lated March shorts. The difference between May and July ranged from 18 to 20 points most of the forenoon. After the first sell lnn movement had subsided there wad a general steadying of the whole list, which continued until after mid-day, when com miaslon h-iuse selling, partly on atop-loai orders, broke May to 9.7Sc. It was also as sumed that Wall street operators, in dis tress, were Identified with a movement to break the market. Under selling of this character the market became very nervous and feverish, with the July discount under May widening to 22 points, or the greatest of the season. Large export clearances and the firmness of southern spot markets had little effect in checking the rolling and the close was officially called steady, with prices 2 points h'gher to 2 lower.
