MAY WHEAT CLOSES FIRM AND UNCHANGED
Carat aad Oata Inerease ttnarter ((,
While Uala la Provlslnna Rniie;es
from Mckel to Tety
rive Ceate.
CHICAGO, Feb. 19. Rearish statistics
caused wpHknm In wheat today, but a
fair demand late In the day helped prices
and th clone was firmer, with May un
changed. May corn was up 44c with
oats 4c higher. Provisions were Mronn
and the May products closed from 64112
to 25c higher. .
Wheat rilled weak the greater part of the
day. fitatlstlrs being bearish, advices from
France showing a decidedly favorable crop
report, while the export demand was light
and clearances small. There was a good
r.i i..nr wheat for sale and liberal Hell
ing for short account and with but slight
demand prices declined. May selling off to
ic. after opening 4c lower at iii-vfi77c.
At tne decline shorts covered moderately,
which caused a slight advance, and prices
held steady urtll late In the sestdnn, when a
little better demand developed, resulting In
a firmer tone. The strength In corn and
oats was a late help. May closed un
changed at 77Hi774e, the top price of the
day. Small receipts, both local and at pri
mary, were the principal strengthening In
fluence. Seaboard clearances ot wheat and
flour were equal to 337.000 bushels. Pri
mary receipts were 389,5n0 bushels, against
442.100 bushels a year ago. Minneapolis and
Duluth reported receipts of lift cars, which
with local receipts of 11 cars, 1 of contract
grade, made total receipts for the three
points of 177 cars, against 34 a year ago.
The sentiment In corn was bullish on a
mall cash demand and good receipts.
There was a fair trade, but offe rings wern
comparatively light, which fact contributed
materially to the stronger tone. Commis
sion houses and provision Interests were
the best buyers, while the offerings came
largely from scattered sources, with some
longs taking profits. The close was firm,
with May Wlo higher at 45 Vn 454c after
selling between 454o and 4541? 4o4c. Local
receipt were 14 cars, with none or contract
""he' liquidation In oats which had been
going on for the past few days was not In
evidence today, but In place of that there
was good buying by local traders. Shorta
were also active buyera, the acarclty of nf-
both spot and futures; In New Tork, how
ever, copper, like tin. was firm; prices
were unchanged at $12. for standard,
!2.!'fiU.tio for lade, $l2.fvft HI for elec
trolytic, and V2.Wnl2.m for csstlng. Lead
advanced 3s 91 In London, spot closing
there at 12, but here It remained quiet
nnd uncharged at $4,124 Spelter was
steady and unchanged locally at $6 (i7 OS.
but In London It advanced 6s to .2 12s 6d.

HOOS-The supply of hogs this morning
was quite liberal and as reports from other
points were unlavorable to the selling In
lenwts prices here took a drop. The mar
ket opened very slow, witn packers bid
ding about a dime lower than yesterday's
general market. Salesmen were unwilling
to take off that much, so that trading was
very slow, and It win late before the bulk
was disposed of. The early sales went
iiirgely (rom $fi.S5 to 26.96. The heavy
weight hogs sold largely from tS90 to o.iS
end as high as $7.15 was paid for a prime
load. The medium weight hogs sold largely
trom $i.i to $6.90 and light stuff from 6.85
down.
Later In the morning the situation Im
proved a little, as It became evident there
were none too many to supply tne require
ments of the local trade, so that the close
of the market was more active and
stronger The general market, then, waa
only 5jjl0c lower. Representative sales:

NW YORK, Feb. 19.-COTTON-Opened
ateady at an advance of 103 points, snd
after a alight reaction, due to profit-taking,
ruled very active and firm under covering
and continued support. There appeared to
be but little outside interest in today's
market, and the chief buying power seemed
to originate with the shorta and the mar
ket therefore, while active and excited, has
been largely profitless. The Liverpool mar
ket at the time of opening was Juet aa dull
as on our close on yesterday, but later re
sponded to the local advance, 'cloning 3C(i4
points higher, though spot cotton there waa
2 points lower. The receipts were less
favorable to the bulls than recently, foot
ing up 20.300 bales, against 19,534 last year,
but the estimates for tomorrow's leading
points Indicate a decided decrease. During
the entire session there was more or less
long cotton coming on the market, and It
was said at the better levels the clique
aold aa freely aa possible without Imparting
an easier tone to valuee. New Orleans waa
firm and followed the New York advance
more or less closely, but few buying orders
being received. Exports were small,
amounting to but 14.948 bales for the day
and unsatisfactory labor conditions were
reported from certain manufacturing dis
tricts In New Hampshire, where there Is a
mill strike. Prices then were st practically
the best of the session. Total aalea futures,
460.000 bales.
