NEW YORK, Feb. 13. The Increase In
business on the 8t.cK exchange today was
mostly on the sell.ng side and caused a
further recession In the level of prices.
The marketing of stock was pretty con
rtant until a suoportlng movement In the
Ei les set In during the llnnl hour. Sup
port wps evident at the same time In some
of the other Morgan stocks, notably .lead
ing and Southern Railway, the latter rising
a fraction over Wednesday. The sentl
mtntal effect of this was little more than
to check the selling elsewhere. The buying
of the Erics themselves wan not followed
up. and the closing was dull and heavy.
The selling of the Erica was on a very
heavy scale from the outset, London Join

were Effected In the common stock of 2
In the first preferred of 2 and In ;he sec

new Issue of bonds were disappointing, but
there was also selling by speculative hold
ers who had bought with the idea that some
new disposition of the whole property was
Involved. Some sort of new capital Issue
by the Erie hns been understood to be on
the program for several yeais past. The
prospect of Increased earnings by reason
of the outlay and the possible rights to
subscription by stockholder? at the Issue
price or 87 did not prove sufficiently at
tractive to prevent very heavy realizing on
every advance. Tho stocks were practically
unsupported until the last hour The sym
pathetic effect on the general list was con
siderable, und the active speculative lead
ers were very generally a nolnt below
Wednesday's level at one point during the
day. The concentrated selling of some of
the recent speculative favorites pointed to
enormous reiilizing on the part of some
speculative pools.
There were some evidences also of bear
Ish manipulation, especially In the circu
lation or rumors of the serious lllners or a
prominent operator, who Is said to have
Important market Interests committed to
his guardianship. The rally in the last
hour was helped by the preliminary fig

Inconsiderable rise In sterling exchange

be no fast ship to sail until next week, but
a probability of gold exports Is indicated.
Money Is growing tighter In London and

The week's exports both of wheat and
corn also fell of materially rrom those of

HoOS-Thcre were not nearly as many
hogs on sale todav in arrived yeaterday
ard besides that several trains were Iste.
The demand on the part of packers wss
quite liberal, so the market opened active
and HdJlOc higher than yesterday. The bulk
of the medium weight hogs sold from W.i
to SS.R5. while the prime heavyweights sold
largely from $6H5 to 6 !l The light hogs
sold from $6 75 down. It wss evident that
packers were anxious for supplies this
morning and It only took a short time for
them to buy up all the early arrivals. The
market, however, did not come to a close
until a late hour because the trains did not
get In on time.
Today's advance more than makes up for
the loan of the last two oays and In ract
carries the average cost to the highest point
reached since Thursday ot last week. Rep

CATTLE There was a very light run of
cattle here today for even a Friday, so
that tha market went a little higher again,
Buyers all seemed to have quite liberal
orders, so that trading was brisk and every
thine? nfTererl sold In a hurry.
There were only a few bunches of corn
fed steers on sale today and those changed
hands freely at prices ranging from strong
to a dime higher than yesterday. As com
pared with Tuesday and Wednesday the
market Is fully 16c higher and some sales
look as much as 20c higher. The loss for
the week. then, is very nearly regained
but owing to the unevenneas of the trade
prices may be quoted all the way from
nearly steady to a dime lower than 'those
In force a week ago today
The cow market was alee active and
strong to 10c higher than yesterday. Prices
on cow stuff have Improved the last two
davs fullv as much as values on beet steers
so that the market Is nearly back to where
It was a week ago today. The same as
with steers the situation could probably
best be described by calling tne market
nearly steady to a dime lower for the week
All kinds of cows and heifers have fluctu
ated back and forth this week at a rapid
rate, so that the week la closing with prices
rather uneven.
Bulls are selling In Just about the same
notches they were a week ago. Prices have
not changed much, as they have been ex
tremely low for some time past. 'About the
nnlv rhanae In the market from dav to dav
was In the demand, as It was much easier
to sell bulls on some days than on others
Veal calves held up in pretty good shape
all the weeg.
There were only a few stockers and feed
rs on sale this morning and, as Is sen
erally the case at the close of the week
the demand was limited, with Prices
shade lower. Prices sre quits a little lower
for the week, especially on tne warmed-up
