MAY WHEAT CLOSES SOMEWHAT HIGHER
Corn and Oats Alio tin I p, While Pro

Shade Better.
CHICAGO, Feb. . The trade In wheat
was moderately active today and on bullish
new the market ruled firm. May closing
c higher. May corn man a shad higher,
while oats wre up V,'c. Provisions
eloped steady with the May products from
272Hc lowr to a shade higher.
The unexpected strength to cables caused
a strong opening In whl and undor free
covering May Bold to 794c alter opening
W'hHc higher at TyQ'Oc. The smaller Ar
gentine shipments for the week, 1.724.HW
bushels, where a total of l.fifiO.Ono haa been
expected, created some anxiety among
ahorti and waa partly responsible for trie
early buying from that source. Ixical
longs took advantngo of the bulge to dis
pose of considerable stuff, and In conse
quence a reaction followed. Reports of
buying at the seaboard for shipment to
France were a help late In the session and
the market responded readily. May again
selling up to 79'c. The close was steady
to firm, with May He higher at 79V1; pri
mary receipts were a bull factor, being
mailer than of late, at 495.00 bushels
against S26.O1) a year ago. The weather
was favorable and crop advlcea were bear
lah. Bradstreet'a report on the export of
wheat and flour for the week showed n
total equal to $.916,000 bushe'.s, compared
with 4.4i.O.OOO bushels last week and 4,xiVMG
bushels a year ago. Clearances of wheat
and flour were equal to 475.0UO bhahels.
Minneapolis and Duluth reported receipts
of 304 cars, which with local receipts of 30
cars none of contract grade made total
receipts for the three points of 334 cars
agnlnst 302 cars a week ago and 275 cars
last year.
Corn acted In sympathy with' the ad
vance with wheat, but when the price of
May had reached 45c there was considera
ble selling by commission houses, which
prevented further advance. The trade In
general waa only fair and was only for
local account. Dullness prevailed the lat
ter part of the session and the close
strong, with May a shade higher at 44V?,
after selling between 44c and 45c. Local
receipts were 210 cars, with none of con
tract grade.
Oats ruled atrong, but the volume of
trade was rather small, the offerings being
light. The strength of other grains wn
an early factor. Local longs were disposed
to take profits and part of the advance
waa lost, but late In the day there waa re
newed demand and the close waa near the
top. May closed "V&Wc higher at 37U37MiC,
after ranging between 36c and 31c, the
top price for the crop. Local recelpta were
lftK ears.
Trovlslons were dull and the sentiment
was rather bearish although opening prices
were a trifle higher on a fair demand for
pork and ribs. Iocals were Ixarlah in
their mood and disposed to sell, with sell
ing by atock yarda people a feature. May
nnrV waa unchanged at $16.75. May lard
closed 2Vc lower at $9.37H, while ribs were
a shade nigner ea.ia.

SEW YORK STOCKS AMI HOMR
Market Regains Old Dullness and
Price Level Yields Aevordingrly.
NEW YORK, Feb. 6. Today's stock mar
ket fell back into dullness and the price
level yielded. ' Then were some profeselona
of depressed feeling over the prjspect of a
weak oank return and over tne upward
course of sterling exchange. The hitch In
the proceedings in the settlement of the
vexed Venesuelan question induced some
selling here for London account and added
another nominal reason for the reaction
But the obvious fact was that the activity
and apparent strength of yesterday cov
ered large realizing operations by the pro
fessional leaders of the market who have
conducted this week's campaign for a rise.
Their buying and their more demonstrative
bidding for stocks, which have been a fea
ture of this week, were lacking today.
When It was perceived 'that this support
was relaxed mm traders offered prices
tiown and round vulnerable spots. The
selling was not urgent, but long continued,
and the buying to cover by room shorts
caused som recovery from the lowest. The
closing, however, was heavy and very dull.

which amounted to 86.360.000. nave bven
offset by receipts from the Interior, which
seem to be less than 83,000, so that tnj
banks have lost cash during the week to
the extent of upward of $3,000,000. The loss
to tne subtreasury was more tnan niur ac
counted for by last Saturday's payment to
the egovernment of a Central Pacific note.
but the government operations have taken
sum dally from the money market. The
condition of the money market has been
nevertheless one of growing ease and the
demand even for time money has shown a
(ailing off at the rates asked by the bunks.
Tne growing ease or money is probably
the truly real ground for the upward course
of sterling exchange.
with the increasing accommodations in
New York there Is every Inducement for
thoHe who have borrowed abroad tojjay off
their maturing obligation!.
Export authorities in tne roreign ex
change market affirm that the extent to
which this process has been carried since
tne nrst or tne year in tar ueyona sny
public comprehension. There is excellent
authority for asserting also that a growing
disposition Is manliest. especially In
Vrance, to Invest In American securities.
This procees ts not perceived In tne stock
market and probably does not involve the
old and seasoned securities which figure In
the international markets and which are
at a price level to Increase selling, rather
than buying by foreigners, it la said in
possible explanation of the French buying
of securities that It leprestnts reinvest
ment In anticipation of the payment which
Is to be made to 1'anama canal harehold-

were few features in touay s market, i ne
Wisconsin Centra: stocks were bought on
rumors of changing control. Amalgamate!
Copper snowed strength In face of the re
actionary market and there were advances
In a number of low-priced Industrial stock.
The rise in Hocking Valley was supposed
to be connected with the undisclosed plan
for the disposition of that property. Other
wise the leading active stocks move pretty
uniformly with the reactionary tendency.
The bond market was quite brond and ac

United States bonds were all unchanged

CATTLE There was a much heavier run
of cattle here today than anyone expected
and in fact receipts were the heaviest they
have been on a Friday ' In several weeks.
As a result the market was very slow and
lower and It was late before scarcely any
cattle changed hands.
.. There were a good many beef steers in
the yards and the quality was about the
same as It has been of late. Buyers did
not start, out until the middle of the foie
r.oon and their tlds were so much lower
that nothing was sold for some time. The
i-ales that were made, could sately is
quoted a dime lower than yesterday on the
average. There was. of course, considerable
unevennesa, as Is generally the case when
prices have been going down as rapidly
as they have of late. At noon there were
StUI a good many cattle In first oa.ids.
The cow market was also very slow and
fully a dime lower than yesterday. All
kinds were affected and as sellers did not
like the Idea of taking off another dime
after the big decline of yesterday It was
late before many cattle went over the
scales. Buyers, though, did not seem to
care whether they got any cattle or not, so
that salesmen had to take the prices offered
or carry the cattle over until Saturday.
Bulls also had to sell lower iivsympathyj
with the decline on cows and heifers, but 1
there was not much change In veal calves. 1
There were not very many stockers and
feeders on sale, but as is generally the vase 1
on a rnoay, nuyers aia not want many
rattle, so that those that were offered had
to sell a little lower than the prices paid
yesterday. Representative sales;
BEEF 3TEEH3.

SHEEP There was a moderate run of
sheep and lambs here today and under the
Influence of a continued active demand for
good stuff the market was brisk and steady
to strong. The quality of the offerings was
only lair and was not up to the usual
standard. Wethers, however sold as high
sa 34.90, which looked a little stronger.
There were no prime Ismhs offered so
that the sales on paper look low. Packers
claim they are not getting enough good
lambs to fill their orders, and that they
could use a good many more to good ad
vantage. There was quite a string of feeders on
sale, but the demand was equal to the oc
casion nnd the prices paid were steady to
strong.
