NEW Y'ORK. Feb. 3.-The professional
element contested the apathetic condition
of the market today and elvveloped some
1 how of strength and activity before the
close of the dJiy. There waa a very meager
outside demand and very little news on
which to base the movement. Reactionary
tenelency during the morning became domi
nant anil the professionals apparently re
signed themselves to the neglected condi
tion of the market.
The WabnHh securities made a slight ad
vance at the opening on the atrength of
the newa from 1'lttsburg that the franchise
for the company s entrance to the city
had been lavorably actt?d upon by the city
council, but the stocks fell back again and
the debenture B bonds particularly sufTcred
from realising. One of the depressing
lactors early Irr the day waa the weakness
of New Y'ork Ventral. This movement was
the result of a characteristic traders' cam
paign. Yesterday s selling of Pennsylvania
em the score of the conversion privilege for
the bonds carried the price of Pennsylvania
stock below that of New York Central,
whereas It haa ruled constantly above that
stock for a long time past. For this reason
traders sold New York Central and bought
Pennsylvania today. The news of the Ill
ness of the king of England was an in
fluence' In the early dullness, as also waa
the renewed hitch In the proceedings for
a settlement of the Venesuelan difficulties.
The December statement of the Pennsyl
vania lines, both east and west of Pitts
burg, was so clear a demonstration of the
prevailing tendency of railroad expenses to
encroach on net earnings that the effect
waa rather tlepreaslng.
Sterling exchange waa ominously strong
and it was said the freight blockades and
rutting down of the grain movement had
resulted In a scarcity of grain bills in the
exchange market. At the same time the
prevailing ease of money Is an Inducement
to borrowers from foreigners to pay oft
maturing obligations abroad. The exchange
market eased slightly at the close. The
growing plenty ot loanable funds waa prob
ably the basis for the attempt to advance
prices of stocks. The rate for call loans
fell below 3 per cent during the day. This
state of ease is due In large part to the
determined quietude of speculation. It Is
manifest also that the powers in the money
worlei have in view to build up their re
sources and to guard against any such ex
tended credits as those which disquieted the
country last fall.
A number of the metal stocks were con
spicuously strong In tewiay's market. The
advancing tendency of the copper market,
the measures to ejonsolldate the lead in
terests the governmental measures which
are discussed for the improvement of the
silver situation and the extraordinary Iron
ir,i eomhlned to form the basis for this
movement, which Included Anaconda, Amer
ican Sme'ltlng. National io anu imrr m
the day I'nited States Steel and the Inde
pendent Iron and steel-companies. St. Louis
Sheffield Steel made an unexplained dip of
24 with a substantial recovery. The mar
ket closed Irregular.
Wabash debenture Rs overshadowed the
bond market, which was Irregu
lar Total sales, par value. $5,635,000. United
States bonds were all unchanged on the last

CATTLE Tho severe snowstorm that set
In this morning delayed the arrival of
trains, to quire. .n extent and , made the
cattle appear In bad form, but at the time
It had a tendency to strengthen prices and
make "buyers anxious for supplies. They
figured that the storm would shut off the
big bulk of the receipts for the rest of the
week and as result the buyers were all
out early and an active and 'strong market
resulted.
The beef steer market opened In good sea
son ami the cattle soon began moving to
ward the scales. The market could safely
be quoted strong and active and as high
as o.u waa paid Tor a bunch of 35 head
that weighed 1.620 poinds. That waa not
only tho top price of the day. but for sev
eral weeks past, but they were also the
best rattle that have been seen here Is a
long time. All the early offerings were dis
posed of In good season, but the late ar
rival of traina, of course, delayed the close
until a late hour.
The cow market was also brisk and
strong, as compared with yesterday. Pack
ers were all afraid there would be a short
age the rest of the week and Jumped In and
paid good etrong prices for all desirable
grades. Camera also sold freely at fully
as good prices as were paid yesterday.
There waa, of course, tome unevenness to
the trade, but as a rule the prices paid
were very satisfactory to the selling Inter
ests. The bull market was also fully steady
and the same waa true of the trade on
veal calves.
There was rather small sunnlv of
stockers and feeders In the yards, so that
In spite nf the storm prices held Just about
steady. The kinds that were bxcklnsr In
quality were rather hard to move as specu
lators did not want to get loaded up with
mat Kino in case oi a prolonged storm.

Buyers did not want to give over siea.lv

buyers and sellers some time to agree on
prie-es. The early sales, however, were
about steady with veaterday'a general
market. The bulk of the good weight hogs
sold from $.65 to $0.70. with prime heavy
loads selling mostlv from $"1.7'i to $6.t(2Vi.
'the lightweights sold from $t 5 down.
As the morning advanced the market
seemed to get a little better, so that the
late tales were a little stronger. A good
many cara were still back at noon, so that
the market did not come to a cl.ise until

SHEEP There were not aulte as manv
sheep and Iambs here today as arrived
yesterday and as the demand continued
brisk and active a steady market for all
desirable grades resulted. A large propor
tion of the offerings consisted of ewes and
while the better grades were steady the
half-fat kinds were a little slow and weak.
There was another shipment of McCullougn
yearlings on tne market and tney sold for
$5.50. or a dime higher then waa paid laat
weea. 1 here was also a prime bunch of
western lambs offered that brought $6.00, or
the hlghciit price or tne season for western
lambs. These prices were a little stronK,
so that choice sheep and lambs could be
quoted steady to strong.
There were very few feeders on sale, but
those that did arrive sold freely at steady
prices.

WHY WHEAT WILL SELL AT $2.00.
Measure wheat by money and It Is worth fl.ftO; measure it with
money and prosperity and it is worth $1.25; mennure it with money, pros
perity and statlHtie's and It Is worth fl.riO; meaaure it with
nil these combined with a bull speculation and It should sell
nt $2.X. Hince 1871 the bread eutluir population of the world
has InrrenKed 45 per cent, w hlle there lms lieen an increase In the
production of wheat of only 20 per cent, and a decrease in buckwheat of
14 ,icr cent; rye, 5 per cent, muzlln and other bread foods, 22 per cent.
Our exportst of wheat for the past twelve montha are second largest in
history. Our wheat crop for 1002 was only fair-sized, of iKior quality.
1001 crop was consumed on the farm and for export, owing; to no coarse
grain crop. The Pacific coast market this year Is the sensation of the
wheat world. The Chinese rice crop was a total failure Inst year, with a
famine In Australia. Again the average price for cash wheat In Chicago
for the past thlrty-flve years Is $1.28 pT bushel. Foreign-cash stocks of
wheat are the smallest for the pant thirty five years. Argentine crop Is
positively overeatlmnted, and when the fact becomes known that she has
no exportnlile surplus of fine grade wheat It will cauno a great surprise
to the trade. The total crop of wheat of the United 'Kingdom is only
about 40,issi,ono bu.. ngnlnut an average crop of tVWKs' bu. for the past
thirty years, and against R.'i.OOO.Ota'l three years ago. Again there Is an
established rule In the sja-culatlve world, and that is that wheat ad
vances 40c per tin. or more every seven years. It did so In 1800, 1807,
1R74. 1881. 1RV8, 18S). and It will do It again thla year. "TUB KED,
