( ontlnn tn Repress Market.
NEW YORK, Jan. 24. -The difficulty In
Inducing prices tn move still confronted
the trailers In utoi ks today, as It hss In In
creasing degree all through the week. The
A'enex'ielan dltllrulty still has a repressive
Influence upon trading and there was snnie
disposition to rouple the prompt signing ot
the l'anania canal treaty with that ques
tion, frlccs hardened, however, lifter the
opening because of the announced decision
of the Washington authorities thai the
Herman action in Venexucla did not present
subjert for representations by this govern
ment. The weakness of f ennsylvania was
the unsettling Inlluence and led tn an ac
tive selling movement, which was only
momentarily checked by the bank state
ment. The closing wa easy with some
quotations nt the lnw't. The selling of
fennsylvanla seemed to be duo to the news
of the borrowing of $40,oun,noo by that com
nanv. The tact that this loan for six
month was negotiated at 4' per cent,
compared with j per ceiu and a liberal
commission paid by the Lake Shore tor Its
$2'),ihMm lor the Reading purchase, was
pointed at as evidence of a declining tend
ency of money r.it.a. bin speculative opera
tors were Inclined tn ee In It an evioence
of fluctuating supplies of capital likely m
be engrossed by continued large syndicate
operations rather tharl to be left free lor
stock market uses. The moderate loan ex
pansion tiy the bankr. In view of the fenn
sylvanla loan operation, wa an agreenb'e
surprise to the operator, tind prompted the
recovery which gave way aRaln at the laeU.

CATTEE Tht re wete not enough cattle
here today tn make a market, but for the
week receipts are about thp same as for the
previous wet k, and 11s compared wilh the
Fame week of last year there Is quite nn
Increase. The market 3vas In good shape
all the week until Friday, when buyers
took off about all they put on the earlier
part of the week.
A good proportion of the receipts all the
week consist d of corn fed fleers, and the
market ruled uctlvo and stronger until
Friduy. The top price of the week was
$6.10, but u finished load would probably
have sold ronslutnihiy above that ngure.
The bulk of the cattle received sold from
$4 HO to $1.50. On Friday the market eased
off a little, so that as compared with the
close of last week the market may be
quoted Just about sternly.
Ihe cow market also ruled nctlve and
higher the tirst of the week, and on
Wednesday and Thursday wns light close
to 26c higher than the close of last week,
but with Friday's decline the market for
the Week could not le quoted over a dime
higher. The commoner class of cows sold
largely from $1.50 to $2.75, with the medium
grades going from $2 75 to $3 5a, and choice
cows selling from $3.50 to $1.25, with an
occasional sale above that llgure.
Hulls were rather slow sale all the week,
hut still prices did not go much of nny
lower, the big decline of Inst week appar
ently being satisfactory to buyers. Veal
calves command, d strong prices, and choice
grades are now selling from 18. 2 j tn $6.50.
There was a good demand all the week
for desirable grades of stockers and feed
ers, und prices moved steadily upward. The
top price of the week was $4.4.i. but they
were good. Aa compared with the clime of
last week It la safe to quote the market
lOitTSc higher on (rood stuff. The commoner
grades are also a little stronger. The bulk
of the cattle now coming forward sell from
$3.50 to $3 k).

SH EEF There were no sheep or lamb
offered on the market today, everything
that came In being sold to arrive, so that
n test of the market whs not made. For
the week receipts show an Increase over
the previous week and also over the Mini'
week of last year. The demand, though,
has beep fully equal to the occasion and an
active, steady market has been experienced
all the week. The only exception wn on
Friday, wh-n buyers realized that they
had forced prices nt this point higher than
nt anv other, and as n result they took off
a Utile, but as compared with the close
of last week the market oil all desirable
grades of both sheep and lambs Is fully
steady. The common klndn. of course,
have been neglected to some extent when
buyers could get enough of the better
griiibs to fill their orders, but still even
the half-fnt kinds are a nigh a they
were last week.
The receipts of feeders have been ex
tremely llht all the week and as there
has been quite a demand prices are 1 un
steady. Quotations: Choice w estern lambf". f fAJl
