WASHINGTON. Jan. 24. Constructively
the statehood bill was today a usual, life
less, and as a matter of fact the admission
of territories was scarcely mentioned in the
course of the day's proceedings.
As soon as the bill was laid before the
senate a number of senators wore afforded
an opportunity to call up and secure the
passage of bills to which there was no ob
jection. After the paBBago of a number of
such bills the statehood bill was again
called up and Mi. Spooner (Wis.) took the
floor. He candidly confessed his intention
not to speak on the statehood bill, and
then discussed the action of the admln
Itsratton in discontinuing the postofflce at
Indlanola, Miss, and refusing to receive the
resignation of the negro nost master. He
defended the president and was responded
TOO GREAT EXPENSE.
Not the Reason.
It la not because Pyramid Pile Cure is

On Mr. Quay's motion the omnibus state
hood bill was taken up, but Mr.. Quay gave
way while the following bills were passed:
Extending the time for the completion of
an Incline railway on West Moutaln at Hot
Springs, Ark.; extending the time for the
construction of the Akron, Sterling &
Northern railway In Alaska; placing Cap
tain E. L. Bailey on the retired list; con
ferring Jurisdiction on the district and
circuit courts of South Dakota in criminal
cases within Indian reservations; author
izing the detail of officers of the army as
chtef and as assistant chiefs of the Phil
ippine constabulary; providing for the com
pulsory attendance of witnesses before
registers and receivers of the land offices;
authorizing the construction of a bridge
across the Missouri river a( 8t. Charles
by the Iowa & Missouri Railroad com
pany; appropriating $200,000 for appro
priate headstones for the graves of con
federate soldiers who died In northern
prisons; placing Lieutenant Commander
Arthur P. Osborn on the retired list of the
navy as a commander; providing for monu
ments to the memory of Generals Francis
Nash and William Lee Davidson of North
Carolina, both revolutionary soldiers.

At 1:30 the statehood bill waa again
called up and Mr. Spooner took the floor.

the entire population- of Indlanola as law
less and brutal. "No man is less likely
than the president to enter upon such a

dent knew that Mrs. Cox did not wish to
resign snd he had accordingly refused to
have (ha office vacated. The people them
selves, to all Intents and purposes, bad
closed the office. He hoped the president
would continue his course until the people
of Indlanola regained their reason.
All Object to Black Officers.
Mr. McLaurln (Mlsi.) said the best feel
ing existed between Mrs. Cox and the peo
ple ot Indlanola, barring the prejudice of
rare. That that prejudice existed people
had fretly admitted, and there was no dis
position to deny It.
When Mr. McLaurln concluded vhe pri
vate pension calendar was taken up. After
the passage of a number of bills, the sen
ate went Into executive session and at 1:12
adjourned.

Saturday afternoon the Omaha Curling
club Indulged In a keen contest on Cut-Oft
lake for the curl'ng stanes presented by
Thomas Kllpatrlck. the patron of the club
for this year. The game was after the
point system, where every one fights for
himself. Only six competed, and owing to
the ice being biased and twisted the scores
were long. But George Anderson, the
curler who has all along been so succexs
ful, stood highest in points and has the
control of the stanes for a year, and if
they are won next year again by him they
will become his property. The next four,
who were tied In points, being (5. L. For
gan, Dr. I. C. Bishop, Robert McLaln and
William J. Hlslop. Robert Patrick was not
far behind.
A regular game was afterward played,
the skips being William J. Hlslop and Rob
ert McLaln, Hlslop counting 7 to McLaln's
16.
The games were watched by many on
lookers, and the skaters were crowding
around all the time.

worked all day on the agricultural appro
priation bill and Anally passed It with only
one amendment of moment, an increase in
the amount for free seeds from 270,G0 to
$300,000.
The house adjourned until tomorrow,

In two games of basket bull at the Young
Men's Christian association gymnasium last
night the assnc I nlon teams were victorious,
the Reds defeating the ftellevue college
team by 15 to 6 and the Working Boys wln
niim from the Omaha High school quintet
by 1 to 12.
The contest between the Reds and Belle
vue college was very swift, as each team
showed some tine ensemble work, but the

team work went to naught.
