Market la Dnll and Featnreless, with hot Small Balers. NEW YORK, Jan. 16 There was little character to today stock market, as I sufficiently Indicated by the volume of dealings, which fell to about the half mil lion share mark. The subslelence of the recent furious activity In the fradlng In left little to the market. This midden sub pldenie had a good deal to do with the feeling of suspicion, which repressed the dealing In stock. Yesterdny' transaction In Erlo of ovef 200,000 shares at net change for the day of half a point struck the trad ers as not consistent lth the lelea of com petitive buying of the stock for control. This suspicion was reinforced by the ac tion of tho stock this morning. After a monetary advance of a small fraction the price fell ba-k to below last nfght In a way that suggested the realising of specu lative profits. Explanation of the shifting of the buying to the preferred stock which were txuh strong, wa sought In state ments that the control of the property was really bring acquired through the half sticks, but the higher prices in compari son of these stocks and the comparatively small volume of their total outstanding Issue did not commend this view -to the traders. The continued liquidation In Reading also created a bad impression upon speculative sentiment and this Im pression was not dlHsliiated by the mark ing up today of Ontario & Western In the anthracite group and the advance In Ches apenko & Ohio and Hocking Valley In the soft coal fields. Rock Island and St. Paul continued heavy, with important segmen tal effect upon the rest of the list. There was a narrow and sluggish market, with only a few stock Influenced by specula tor. Sugar suffered from a fear that effective opposition was developing "to the Cuban reciprocity treaty. Amalgamated Copper moved on the dividend declaration and In sympathy with the rally In the market for the metal. The rise In Ml rourt Pacllic was accompanied by rumors that the plan for financial adjustment of the Gould railroad properties wa about ready to put Into operation. There wa no disquieting element in the money sit uation, unless It might be the indication that the Bank of England 1 disposed to build up Its reserves and maintain the money rate. Ths considerable decreases In Its holdings of government securities seem to point borrowing from the market to decrease supplies. Whether this Is a measure of protection against the demand for gold from Paris or Is preliminary to an attempt to attract foreign gold to Its own vaults does not appear yet. The advance in the official discount rates of thn banks of Bombay and Bengal were significant of tho - hardening tendency of the English money markets. The Bank of France also continues to lose gold, while demands upon It for credits continue heavy, both by note expansion and Increases of 'loans. New York banks continue to gain cash, bet the gains from the subtreasury are due to heavy payments on government contracts and for pensions, which are made In bulk In New York, but which are now about completed. Time money rates were re ported rather firmer. None of the upward movements were well maintained and the closing was dull and easy at about the low level of the day. Bonds were dull and Irregular. Total sales, par value, $2,435,000. United States 4s advanced 14 and the new 4s, coupon, 1 per cent on last call. The following are the closing prices orj the New York Stock exchange: .. 1 '4 80. Packers, though, acted as If they wanted the cattle, so that a fairly active and steady market was ex perienced. The most of the trains arrived In good season, so that by the middle of the forenoon a good proportion of the of ferings waa-out of first hands. The Deer steer mantel was rat ner spoiieu, but as a general thing the prices paid could be Quoted about steady with yesterday. The kinds that suited buyers were easy to dispose of at fully steady prices, while some less desirable grades were somewhat neglected, but still they brought as much as the same kinds sold for yesterday. The quality of the offerings as a whole was nothing extra, the aame as has been the case all the week. The cow market was very brisk, aa paeK- ers all seemed to have liberal orders, and the prices psld could safely be quoted steadvv It only took a comparatively short time lor ine oum 01 ine receipts 10 cohosh hands. The canners a.id cutters aa well as the good cornfeda were wanted. Bulls sold at lust about steady prices with yesterday's decline. Veal calves and slags were also steaay. Desirable grades ot stocaers ana ieeaer held just about steady, but anything that was a little off In quality was almost un salable. Speculators say that there Is prac tically no demand at an irom in country for Inferior grades and consequently they have all that class of cattle on hand that they want. There I a fairly good demand, though, for Jtrlctly good stuff. Up to a late hour today there were very few bunches of common wtuff sold and the sales that were made were considerably lower than yesterday. lRepreeentaUve sales: BEEF STEERS. No. A Av. Pr. No. A. NKW YORK, Jan. 15 COTTON-Opened firm at an advance of 1W4 point and de veloped great activity and strength. Shorts were active buyers. it . claimed that leading bear operators covered freely dur ing the session. Selling to secure profits supplied most of the demand, which wa very great from all sources, and finally held the market tirm at about the best level of the sesnlem, the net advance being 7gi0 points. At the best prices today tho market was above the point at which the leader of the late bull movement announced his change to a bearish view on the ground that the strong statistical position of cot ton had been already nver-dutcotinted. Since that time, however, the moverient of cot ton has been so small and the consumption so heavy that renewed operations on the long side of the account have steadily ad vanced the speculative schedule, while the demand from sulnners and exporters has been such to keep the spot level at a point. snowing a premium over the future list at New York, a phase of the situation attract, lng a heavy speculative demand toward .-us center. The totul transactions In fu tures today reached about 400,000 bales, rep resenting the most active market of recent times.
