CHICAGO. Jan. IS There van a good ;
trade In whwit toddy and the market km
strong on decldet'ly bulllfh news, May
clcslng Sc higher. May corn wa up V.
while oats were Mic higher. Provisions
were barely steady and Mav options close
from a, shade higher to 6c lower.
There van hkxI buying of May wheat by
some of the strongest people fn the trade,
wlih the most iirotnlnent long taking on
considerable. Part of the buying was for
southwest account, rhletly Ht. Louis, and
the shorts were also good buyers. The pell
lug was mainly by local trailers and offer
ings were so free that th upward ten
dency was cheeked materially. There was
a fair demand from the northwest, but the
strength In rorn whs the principal bull
factor. Small clearances and favorable
weather were bear factors. May opened n
shade to c hlither nt 75c to T57fj7!c, and
advanced jrradjally to ih-SiliGH'". where t
closed with a gain of Sc. Hraltn-et
world's visible snowed a decrease of a. .""'.
001 bushels, where a much smaller decrease
had been exeeled. Clearances of wheat
arid flour were equal to 344.0HO huHhcl and
60 boatloads were reported taken for ex
port. Primary receipt were &4i. bushem,
against &'7,l biinhels a year ago. Minne
apolis and Duluth reported receipts of .127
cars, which, with local receipts of "0 cars
one of contract grade made total receipts
fo the three points of 3H7 cars, against 434
tars last week and 479 cars a year ago.
Corn ruled active and strong, the strength
abroad having a stimulating effect. There
was a big trade In May around 44c, but the
oflerlnas bv commission houses and by
small longs retarded the upward move 1
nient, A big export demand was me cmer
strengthening Influence, there being over a
hundred boatloads reported taken for ship
ment. The close was strong and at the top
for May at 44'c, with a gain of c, a'ter
ranging between 4:ifi-4.'lc and 44'nc. Local
receipts were fair oho cars but there were
none of contract.
Oats were "fairly active and the market
was firm, the strength In other grains being
a help. Commission houses sold on the ad
vance, the bulk of the offerings being taken
by scalpers. A fair cash demand wsb also
n supporting factor. The close was lirm.
with May Mic higher at M'iliXtc, after
soiling between 34Mi34T4iC and 3-".c. Local
receipts were small cars and a still
further falling off Is anticipated.
Provisions were quiet, but held steady.
In view of the decline In hogs. A little
selling by pit traders caused an easier
feeling In pork and lard, but ribs held
steady. May pork closed 5c lower at I16.27V4,
lard waa down 6c at 1:4. 471. while Hub were
a shade higher at lS.&VftX.97i.
Kntlmated receipts for tomorrow: "Wheat,
30 cars; corn, iK5 cars; oats, lu6 cars; hogs,
43 000 head.

UINDON, Jan. 13 Money was In active
demand In the market today and supplies
were i.ot plentiful; discounts were firm;

the set-back in New York, but afterward
were better Inclined, though featureless:

Market Itencts Attain, bu Recovers
silahtly and Closes Irreanlar.
NEW YORK. Jan. 13. The slock market
tuaile a further reaction today and wis
henvy or weuk during most of the session,
but made some recovery dining the last
hour nnd closed Irregular. The heaviness
of the market had no better explanation
tnan yesterday. Money advanced from 41
per cent at the opening to 6 per cent, but
no difficulty was experienced In getting it
and little attention seemed to be paid to
the money oltuatlon by the operators In
slocks. This was not true, however, of the
foreign exchange market and the anxiety
felt in regard to the development was due
of course to the probable effect on money.
Sterling exchange was In quite strong de
mand today In spite of yesterday's heavy
export of corn, and good hopes of continu
ance of this outgo. London operations In
stocks here were not on a large scale and
did not Influence exchange. It Is believed
that some hills are about maturing that
represent borrowings abroad for New York
account during the money stringency here
last month. There Is a likelihood also that
there let some accumulation of exchange to
provide payment for French rentes, for
which there is said to be some present de
mand on Hccount of the American Insur
ance companies.
The effect In Berlin yesterday of the fore,
snartowlng of a German loan was duplicated
In lxndon today by the expectance of an
early announcement of a Transvaal loan.
These government operations ore the prob
able explanation of the hardening of the
money rate, and It Is believed that our ob
ligations to forelan money centers are still
sufficient to permit them to draw gold
from us In case of neeu. This prospect
would have a natural tendency to check
wholesale commitments In speculation for
a rise In New York. But yesterdsy'a dis
appointing response from the general pub
lic to last week's considerable and Inviting
rise served to admonish the managers of
the advance that little was to be hoped for
yet from the public In the way of absorb
ing securities which still remain In the
hands of syndicates and promoters. Re
newed strength In Erie and St. Paul this
morning and vigorous support of Reading
seemed to be designed to reassure specu
lative sentiment, but when It was perceived
that advantage was being taken of this
sustaining Influence to effect large selling
of Rock Island the selling was renewed
throughout the list, and there was no lm-
Sortant recovery until the last hour, when
Innhattan was lifted 2 points over last
night and Erie was run up again to the top
level of the morning. Contributory causes
to the heaviness were the steps taken In
congress to Investigate the coal supply,
fears of damage to earnings of railroads
bv snow blockades and broad Intimations
that no Immediate dividends are to be ex
pected on Colorado Fuel, practically all
leading stocks were a point or more below
last night at one time and not all of them
fullv recovered on the late rally.
Bonds were moderately active, but were
Irregular. Total sales, par value, $2,070,000.

CATTLE There was the neavlest run of
cattle here today of the year to date, and
more tnan were generally expeciea. Buy
ers took advantage of the opportunity to
pound the market, and as a result trading
was rather slow and the day was well ad
vanced before the bulk of the cattle was
disposed of.
A liberal proportion ot tne receipts tnit
morning consisted of cornfed steers, and a
number of bunches were of pretty good
quality. Packers, though started In bid
ding a big dime lower, and although sellers
neia on ror some time in tna nopes 01
getting more money, they were finally
obliged to take off luc and In some cases
15c. Trading was rather slow from start
to ftnlBh. Other markets wero also quoted
lower, so that prices at this point are
still well In line.
The cow market waa also fully a dime
lower, and a good many aales were as
much as 16c lower than yesterday. Trading
was rather slow, as sellers were unwilling
to take off that much. The decline affected
the better grades as well as the canners
and cutters, packers all seemed to have
liberal orders, but they wanted to fill them
at reduced prices.
Bulls and stags were also alow and lower,
but veal calves held Just about steady,
there being none too many on hand to
meet the demand.
The stocker and feeder market did not
show much change from yesterday. Good
cattle were scarce and prices held Just
about steady, but the break on fat stuff
naturally made speculators rather bear
ish on the less desirable grades of both
stockers and feeders. Representative sales:

HOGS The market at this point opened
lust about steady with yesterday's average,
but before many hogs had chaaged hands
less lavorable reports were received from
Chicago, and the market eased off a little,
so that the general market could be quoted
a shade lower. The quality of the hogs,
however, was so much better today that
the market on paper does not show the
decline. The bulk of the hogs sold from
86 46 to 86.55. The better grades sold mostly
trom 16.50 to t.55. with the medium weights
mostly around 16.50, while the light hog
sold from t 45 down. Although the mar
ket was rather slow In getting started
practically everything was disposed of In
good season. Representative aalesi

SHEEP There was a more liberal run ot
sheep and lambs hae this morning than
has arrived In some little time, but the
demand was fully equal to the occasion.
Buyers were all out early and everything
at all deoent changed hands In good sea
son. As high as 15.76 was paid for fed
western lambs, and 15. JO was paid for fed
western sheeD and vearlinirs. It whs vrrv
evident that packers were anxious for
supplies, as the rv:eipts of late have not
been large enough is fill their orders.
Feeders were again very scarce and there
was no quotable cnange in the prices paid
for the few that arrived.
