SEW YORK STOCKS AD BOXDS. Persistent Selllns; of Reading Caases ( onfealon Attnlssn Stron. NFW YORK, Jan. 10. There was evi dence of some confusion of sentiment In the movement of prices of stocks today. The persistent liquidation In Reading had an unsettling effect. The strength of Atch ison waa In strong contrast. The purchase of 20.ua shares of this stock within the first few minutes of the trading lifted it strongly and had a stimulating effect else where. There was some show of positive strength In New York Central and Penn sylvania, on the strength of the Reading deal having a tendency to harmonise the whole railroad sltuatton. Elsewhere the market was Inclined to be dull and fluc tuations were narrow un'll the appearance of the bank statement. The cash item was a disappointment. In place of the pre dicted increase of 89.0ta,iA) to 8U.0O0.on0 the weeks gain amounted to only $4,740,100. The only plausible explanation to account for this discrepancy was that the heavy flow of cash into Chicago the latter part of the week had been arrested there and not forwarded to New York, as had been supposed. Sterling exchange was Inclined to harden and discounts advanced In Lon don. The market closed weak. The only explanation of the movement In Atchison was an unconfirmed rumor of a plan for a combination of the Rock Island. United States 2 and old 4s advanced 4 per cent and the new 4s. coupon, 4 per cent, as compared with the closing call of last The following are the closing price on the New York Stock exchange: Atchlaon 4o pi J Bal. a OUlo da p(d Canadian PsclSe... For the week receipt have been a little heavier than the week before, but there 1 a decrease as compared with ths aine week of la.t year. The receipt for the ten day of thl week snow a de crease of over 4.000 head a compared with the time day of last year. The market on cornfed steers was in good shape most of the week, and until Thursday the tendency of prices was up ward. On Friday, however, buyers took off the bulk of what they put on the first part of the week, so that as compared with the close of last week the market 1 strong to a dime higher. The bulk of the cattle now coming lorward are selling from 84.00 to $4.75, though a tunch occa sionally ells around 85.00, and a finished load will bring considerably more than that. . The cow market wa also active and higher until Friday, when prices took a drop amounting to 10&15o. A compared with the close of last week, however, the market may be quoted generally a dime higher. The big bulk of the offerings all the week consisted of cow tuff. but the demand aeemed to be equal to the occasion and all kinds met wun reauy asm Tceyv , on Friday. The better grades of cornfed 1 cows are now selling from $3.50 to 84 4t ! but It takes a pretty good bunch to bring 83 85 or better. The medium grade are selling largely from 82 90 to $3.60. while the r.n.n.r.n binds sell from $2.00 to $2 75. Bulls, veal calve and stags have not shown much change during the week. On ome day they were easier to dispose of than on other, but as a general thing price are In about the same notche they were a week ago. , , . Receipts of stockers and feeder have been extremely light all the week, and while the demand was not large, It seemed to be In excess of the supply, so that prices have ruled higher all the week, but so few have been sold that It la difficult to quote a definite advance. As high as $4.25 has been paid. Representative sales: cowa No. I.... ....1100 $ 00 11 1MI 8 M CALVES. I TO 00 HOGS There was a liberal run of hog here today for a Saturday, but the local demand was In good shape, so that ths market ruled fairly active and fully steady with yesterday. The quality of the hog was a little better today, so that the market on pper makes a better appear ance. There was not much change In the market from start to finish, practically all of the early arrivals being deposed of In good season. The bulk or the sales went from $6.36 to W-46. The better grades sold largely at 46. though as high as $6.50 was paid for a prime load. The butcher weight old largely around So. 40, and the light stuff from $6.35 down The receipts for the week show a big decrease both as compared with iat week and also with the same week of last year. In view of the light supply seller havs been able to force prices up considerably. Thursday proved to be the high day of the week, when the average price showed an advance over the close of the previous week amounting to about lc On Friday, however, there was a decline amounting to fra 10c, and the week closed with a net gain of about a dime. Those that were 011 sal brought fully steady prices and packers seemed to be anxious for the better grades. As high as Jo Sj was pnld for some prime lambs, which was pro nouncjd a aood strona Drlce. For the week receipts have been fully as heavy a they were last week and '.here Is a big increuse a compared with the same week of last year. The first of this week prices eased off a little, but the loss has sii Deen regained r.na tne market is a little nitrner than the close or last week. Thers seems to be a good strong undertone to the market for good stuff, but the half- fat kinds ars. of course, more or less neg lected. Feeders have been In very light supply all ths week so that although tne demand has been of limited prtruortlons It has been large enough to take everything offered at good strong prices. One of tho note worthy moves In the financial world that U attracting a great den I of attention, is the pooling of Inter est by small invistors. A Bt. IajuIs firm, the National Securities Tympany. Is ths prime mover In the pln. This company receives the motley nf thousands of small investors, and. coniMulns them, form gliJHntlo sums, which enables them to suc cessfully triinsact enormous deals that py h'iriclome protils lo the Individual member of th pool. This Is another phase of the Community of Interest Idea niiuie so popu lar by J. rierpont Morgan, Ihe only differ ence being that this company Is composed of in unlimited number of small Investors, while Mr. Morgans companies are com-pos-od of a limited number of rich men. The National is the lirat company organ Ired on this new j.Iuii. but because of it wonderful success It la but u question of a short time until many more will inter the held, it Is a well known fact that the innn of money his thousands of opportuni ties to make profitable Investments thut never come to the man of small means. In popular language, "it t:ikes money to make money." Hy this successful plan of com bination the small Investor with from fifty lo a tew hundred dollars secures tho same opportunities thst come to the man of millions, and as u consequence rrallxea the same enormous per cent of prollt on his In vestment, however small It may be. it can be surely said that a more marked departure than this plan was never made in tho world cf money and those who take advantage of the i pportunllles offered by mis company will lealise more on their money In a week thun they would under crilinary conditions in a year. The general pian upon which the company is operated does not materially illlter from that em ployed by the national bunks. i he In vestors of the company occupy Ihe same position as Ihe stockholders of the bank. Kach and every thirty days a dividend la declared and each Investor receive n draft for his profits during this time. The lnvet ment Is amply secured and Investors run no risks whatever. The entire capital of Ihe company, One Hundred Thousand Dol lars ttlim.Maj). stands between the investors and loss. The majority of the mammoth fortunes of this country were made hy almost exactly the same methods as those employed by the National Securities Com puny. Combination is the keynote of pres ent day success. The small Investor, by piuclng his money with that oi hundreds and even tho.. ...aa of other small In vestors, obtain an the advantages of enor mous capital und hl money earns as much, dollar for dollar, us that of the millionaire "Captains of lnuustrv," while small sum . Upon investing the investor receive a Ceitiucaie of Ueposlt, stating on lis face that a sum equal to 6 per cent a month Is guaranteed, puyable monthly, and giving tne holder oi the ccrtliiicaie the right to return the certificate ut any ' time he may choose and withdraw hi in vestment in whole or In part Instantane ously. This Is without question one of the greatest opportunities fur safe and highly profitable Investment in the entire financial world. It la worthy the careful considera tion of any man who desires to rapidly accumulate a snug bank balance nnd yet have his money Invested where It Is at all times subject to Instantaneous withdrawal and protected from loss by a company whose financial standing and reliability U beyond question.
