SCHWAB INVESTS IN BRONZES
French Sculptor Casting; Two Hereto
Figures for the Steel Mai
(Copyright. 1903, by Press Publishing? Co.)
PARIS, Jan. . (New York World cable
gram 8peclal Telegram.) The two brome
statues ordered by Charles Schwab for his
new mansion in Riverside drive, New York,
were shown In their clay model form to the
correspondent of the World today by Jean
Leon Oerome, the celebrated French sculp
tor. The two bronzes are to cost about
$150,000 and are to, In a way, symbolize, as
nearly as possible, Mr. Schwab's life ana
the two principal factors In ths Industry to
which his career has been devoted, ths artl- ,
san and the metal In which he works.
One statue represents labor and is a
splendid figure of a workman In lifelike at
titude, brawny and muscular. He looks the
perfect type of manhood, and, as he stands
with the Implements of his trade around
him, Is fittingly emblematic of the Industry
Mr. Schwab wishes to be depicted.
The other figure symbolizes ths science of
metallurgy and Is a gracious female figure,
draped and wearing a laurel wreath. She

M. Gerome exhibited articles, photographs
and documents sent to him from Pittsburg
by the orders of Mr. Schwab to assist him
In bis designs. Among the charactertlstto
accessories are a pair of shoes such as are
worn by the steel workmen, and there are
also a shirt and pair of trousers that have
done duty on the body of a real son of toll.
Maurice Herbert of New York, the archi
tect for Mr. Schwab's new hcuas, tent two
artists from New York to Pittsburg to se
cure photographs, tketchea, clothing and
other things for the use of ths Frenoh
sculptor and these have been of Immense
advantage to him In securing truthful por
traiture. When Mr. Schwab passed through
Paris on his way to the Rlverta he and Mrs.
Schwab visited ths studio of M. Oeroms In
the Boulevsrd Chechy and made a careful
study of the work as shown by the models.
Mr. Schwab told M. Oerome that he was
entirely satisfied with the sculptor's con
ception of the figures and directed him to
proceed with the casting In bronze. Mr.

visit to the studio by an Interpreter, for,
although the steel king understands French'
well, he hesitates In speaking It.
The two statues will measure seven feet
In height and will be supported on bugs
marble pedestals. They will be placed In
the art gallery, which will be located in the
northeastern corner of the mansion. Tho
bronzes will bs csst in Frsnae and will not
be finished for three weeks.
The pedestals will be made In the United
States, ss Mr. Schwab bellaves In patroniz
ing the lnduatrles and arts of his notlve
country whenever possible.
As soon as M. Gerome has finished the
two statues be will' begin work npon a
group designed for the grand hall of the
Schwab mansion. All of the statuary will
be sent In one shipment and will not arrive
