Chicago Wheat Fit Em Its Eyes on GoTern-
ment'i Eeport.
EXPECTED BEAR NATURE BRINGS EASE
Wheat Clones Slightly Lower (or May
aad Cora and Oats Also Show Light
Drops, Thoof h Demaad Is
Fairly Active.
CHICAGO, Dec. 80. Prospects of a bear
lh government report caused an easier
feeling In the wheat pit today and the close
was V4l4fec lower for May. tJorn was Sc
lower and oats were also ufT Sc. May pro
visions cloned Irom 5c to 7'nroc lower.
Wheat wax only moderately active, and
prices were disposed to slump off, the mar
ket being especially weak early In the day,
but later on a fair export demand and a
decrease In the world s vlslhle supply, to
gether with covering by shorts, a partial
recovery followed. Quite general selling
of December soon after the opening was
the cause ot the break on prices, May be
ing affected by the cash month. It was
expected that the government report, which
was made public late In the afternoon,
would show u good Increase over the previ
ous estimate and this tended to weaken the
market. The close was easy and near the
low point. May opened unchanged at 76i'(f
77c and rangeu between 7f''? :S! ana 7ic,
closing fric lower at 7l'c. liradstrect's
'world s visible showed a decrease of 2.15,oO
bu., compared with a decrease In the corre
sponding wck last year of 313.000 bu. Clear
ances of wheat and flour were equal to
IMMMO bu. Primary receipts were 4K6.HOO bu..
against U,tW a year ago. Minneapolis and
lniluth reported receipts of 275 cars, which,
with local receipts of 111 cars, with one of
contract grade, made total receipts for the
three points of 36 cars, against 417 last
week snd 6 -'J a year ago.
Inactivity was again manifested In corn
and this fact taken in conjunction with the
good weather for the grading and move
ment resulted ' in an easier undertone
throughout the day. Weakness in wheat
was the principal bear factor, although
liquidation by locals late In the session
added to the general depression. The close
was easy with May c lower at 43Mi'43Hc,
after selling between 43it43c and
Local receipts were 632 cars, with six of
contract grade.
Oats were fairly active and the market
was quite -steady after a fractional decline
arly along with other grains. There was
considerable liquidation at the start, but
the offerings were well taken. Commis
sion houNK were the best buyers. There
wss less doing In the last halt of the ses
sion and the close was easier, with May c
lower at 33c. after ranging between 33To
and 34V'&34')kC. Local receipts were 18
cars.
Provisions reflected the weakness In the
situation, due to extremely heavy receipts,
there be.ng 60,000 hogs posted on the ar
rival sheets, and prices at the yards were
lUffrl5c lower. This led to considerable sell
ing early by locals and there was also a
good deal of January sold by brokers, pre
sumably for the account of some of the
packers. There was a good demand for May
lard, which helped prices. The close was
steady, with May pork 7H4tlOc lower at
316.45tg 16.47V4, May lard wan off 7V4c at 83.55
and ribs were 6c lower at $8.62.
Estimated receipts for tomdrrow: Wheat,
E6 cars; corn, 2G0 cars; oats, 110 cars; hogs,
5,000 head.

Review of Operations on Stock Ex
change Up to Noon,
NEW YORK, Dec. SO. Prices moved
downward in the opening dealings, Amal
gamated Copper leading the way with a
decline of V Brooklyn Transit also lost
a large fraction. Sugar showed a small
advance and Chicago Great Western rose
V. but the preferred B stock lost 1. Busi
ness was on a very small scale and there
were no changes excepting a small frac
tion beyond those mentioned.
The scarcity of offerings on the decline
checked any further short sales, and the
bears bought to cover, causing a quick
recovery. Sugar, -Manhattan, Brooklyn
Rapid Transit were conspicuously Arm, but
did not rise more than a fraction above
last night. Metropolitan securities rase 4,
International Pump preferred 3 and St.
Joseph & Grand Island preferred lost 4.
Sugar was sold freely to realize after it
touched 130 and had gotten below 129 before
11 o'clock.
The stiffness of the dull money rates at
12 pef cent and above did not prevent large
buying of the Erie stock on account of the
favorable November earnings. Other coal
ers advanced In sympathy, but the sym-
fiathetic responses In the Gould list was
Ight. Erie rose 1 and the eecond pre
ferred 1. There was an advance of about
a point In Reading; Delaware & Hudson
gained 3; Chicago Great Western, St. lyouis
Southwestern preferred, Cleveland and
Cincinnati, Chicago St St. Louie, Iowa Cen
tral, General Electric and Anaconda gained
a point. Bonds were Irregular.
Realizations only caused a temporary
check to the advance which was renewed
with more confidence In all quarters. Ad
vances of a point or over were numerous,
while Erie and Rock Island gained 2, Erie
second preferred 3 and Lackawanna 4.
Iowa Central preferred also sold 2 and
the United States Express 2 higher.
The strength of the coal permeated the
general list and .here was a more active
demand for the standard railroads and nu
merous specialties. The transcontinental
stocks were In good demand, led by St.
Paul, which reached 178. Advances else
where ran from 1 to 1 for Great Northern,
Union Pacific, Rock Island, Louisville,
Amalgamated Copper, Manhattan,. Brook
lyn Transit and some others of less promi
nence. General Elsctrlc rose 3 and West
Inghouse Electric 6.

CATTLE There was a much larger run
of cattle here this morning than was gen
erally expected and other points also had
heavy receipts, so that prices took another
tumble. Trading was rather slow from
start to finish, as there seemed to be more
cattle than packers cared for, and conse
quently they took their time.
The market on beef steers did not suffer
as badly as might be expected owing to the
fact that the bulk of the offerings con
sisted of cow stuff. The kinds ot steers
that Just suited the buyers sold at right
around steady prices, but the general mar
ket could be quoted from nearly steady to
a dime lower. The bulk ot the cattle were
only half fat, but still there were several
loads that were In pretty good condition.
The day was well advanced before a clear
ance was made.
The cow market was lower again this
morning In the great majority of cases.
The general decline amounted to about a
dime, though some sales of the best grades
and also some canners sold at what looked
to be nearly steady prices. The medium
grades have suffered the worst decline.
As compared with last Friday the general
market Is right close to a quarter lower.
Bulls, veal calves and stags were all a
little slow and weak owing to the. decline
on steers and cows.
There were scarcely enough atockers and
feeders on band to make a market, and as
speculators all wanted a few, it if afe to
call the market on desirable grades strong.
Common stuff Is r'lll somewhat neglected.
but owing to the extremely light offerings
it is an easier matter 10 dispose ot tne
Inferior grades than It was a short time
ago. Representative sales:

Packers e'arted In bidding 15c lower

much chance of preventing the break, the

SHEEP There was Just a fair run of
sheep here this morning and the market on
all desirable grades of killers ruled active
and steady to strong. Western yearlings
sold as high as 84.75, western lambs brojght
85.25 and Wethers 84 50. All the packers
seemed to be anxious for supplies, so that
practically everything in the yards was
disposed of in good season. The common
kinds, of course, did not Bell quite as
readily, but still they brought as good
prices ae were paid yesterday.
The feeder market did not show any
quotable change. . The supply was very
light, eo that prices held steady.
