Alligator move rapidly under the water, are hard to see, harder to hit, and the har poon will penetrate only the least accessible portion of the body. Nor does tba title to the hide necessarily pass with making fast the weapon. On afternoon. In tha , Cheexhowlttke river, says a writer In Couqtry Life In America, I harpooned a large alligator which towed ma up and down the stream (or an hour or two and then sulked in Its deep est part. I pulled on the line until the boat was directly f er him and 'stirred htm up with the harpoon pole. He rolled him self up on the line, l'i the' manner peculiar to sharks and alligators, and banged the boat suggestively. We rowed to' the bank and, making fast to some bushes, hauled od the line until we succeeded In worrying him nearly to the boat, when he rose to ths surface and attacked us with open mouth. We repelled the kttack with harpoon pole and rifle. The former waa promptly bitten in three pieces, but the latter apparently finished him. It was so nearly dark that we decided to tarry him Jn the skiff a. mil down the river to where our loo, vas an chored, and to skin him (n next morning. We broke the seats out of the boat, and to gether managed to lift the head of the alli gator aboard and tie it. We then tried the other end, when ths reptile cam to life and landed a blow with his tall which lifted me out of the skiff Into the saw grass, with the breath knocked out of my body and hands and face badly cut by tha grass. Boat and boatman were capsized. As my rifle had fortunately been left upon the bank, I waa sble to ktll the alligator again. Ws secured him by floating the bot under him and then balling it out. Tha alligator com pletely filled the boat, so that my com panion and I tat upon bis back aa we pad dled down the river with gunwales unpleas antly near the water. It was growing very dark and tba water around us was becoming alive with alliga tors. While we were reflecting upon our overloaded condition eur alligator earn to Ufa again and shifted ballast until water poured over the guawal. W quickly bal anced the boat, only to see It again dis turbed and to ship more water. A scramble for the shore followed, which we reached without capsizing, and where we left our victim for the night after again killing him. In the morning our buszard friend from ths Homosassa river, surrounded by bis family, was sitting above him la a tree, waiting for us to attend to our carving duties. There are drawbacks to hunting In the' Oreat Cypress swamp. Even natives have been lost and ha dlsd la Its recesses.
